I wish more people would post what they think the song is trying to convey. Most will agree this is a great song, can we not delve a bit deeper here? I sort of view this as unrequited love, a possible break-up. The first verse describes how he feels about the subject. She is a part of him, she's everywhere and cannot be escaped. "Only in dreams, we see what it means" There is an issue that is only solved during dreamstate, when all becomes clear. "Reach out our hands, hold on to hers" He grasps her here because he is unable to do so in everyday life. "But when we wake, it's all been erased, and so it seems, only in dreams" The connection he made to her is lost upon waking, and so it seems only in dreams he is able to be with her. He offers a hypothetical situation in which he is able to be with this girl he loves, and begin over again. About stepping on her toenails, the way that he says "into a thousand pieces" seems to large scale for such a small act. I think he had hurt her before, in this daydream he realizes it's a good thing it is such so that he cannot hurt her again. |

This song is seductive. So sexy, yet with a dash of melancholy. During the first two lines I think he's trying to convey that his love is not fleeting, he will love her always. "I'll never feel ashamed of you". I imagine them eighty, teeth falling out. haha. He doesn't want to waste away the "truth"- his love and need to be with only her. "There's nothing left to say to you" Has he already tried to prove his love? Or are they lovers, lying in sweet silence all day? They have endured struggles, as the tears and fears line references. Earlier he spoke about looking for change, which would require a day or two away from her. He later goes on to say during the day or two he would simply be wasting away: why ever leave her side? Even if she runs away... This is about the point of falling in love in which you're helpless and all one can do is pray that the other will surrender, too. |

I think the theme here is expectations and illusions placed on love: "Search all your life Thinking you’d love your wife Then you cheat and you lie And expect something more queer" You take all you want and it's "never enough" because nothing will ever live up to our expectations. |

He loves her too. "Don't make me a fool... please play by the rules". He knows the murky waters of love and wishes to preserve it as pure. Basically, he's giving her his heart and asking not to be hurt. "If I knew a way out from breaking your heart, was it free for the taking?" However, he knows he is also capable of hurting her and its almost like a no-turning back type deal... is hurting someone less more appropriate than breaking a heart? He wants to know where they stand. I'd really like to see what others think about this one.. |

Love fades when we question it, unable to completely give ourselves freely. Dreams are just that; no matter how much we do of it they fade too. The death of a dream is a painful one. Again, love dies when uncertainty arises. Almost like a self-fulfilling prophecy, or maybe its simply intuition... |
