love, love, LOVE this song. "it was poverty that kept you sweet and dreams that kept you young." perfect line. I could be wrong, but I feel like this could be about Jenny's childhood. About growing up poor, looking out for herself and knowing who she was. "you used to dine out on a dollar, with a switchblade in your coat, you had your young mind in the gutter, and your feet on the ground.' Fame and money have come and now she's remembering what used to be. That's just my take on it. Either way, beautiful song. |

@rowanoak I was wondering the same thing. That'd be a shame though, I do love me some Rilo Kiley. Anyway, great song, solid record. Jenny Lewis does it again. |

I always thought it was 'hatred for all others...' Maybe not, but it sounds like he puts a weird inflection on hatred and says it with separation. like 'Hey - tred' for all others. I don't know, I don't hear 'transform.' |

I love this song. It's so simple and elegant. To me, it's seems like it's about divorce. 'what it was wasn't my fault...The cameras and the kids...we're fighting them all.' 'what do her friends say, who was involved. Oh, call it all off' It's like something happened, and if he would have known about it, maybe he could of done something but now it's too late. And now they're separating and dividing everything. Then, 'on the way back to the bank...how hard did it come? When was it that you lost your soul?' It's like his wife/lover is taking him for everything he ever had. 'we should have known...the needles, the space, time can't erase.' They should have known all along, that they couldn't make it work. 'buttoned down, you'll get the best of me...' in the end, she'll get the best of him (his kids, his possessions, his money, his life). That's just what it means to me. It's really sad, but incredibly beautiful. I love it. |
