In my opinion, this song is about family and togetherness and the whole deal and all while being not picture perfect You were a child Crawling on your knees toward it Making momma so proud -this part is just about the happiness and love and all of that that families i.e. mom's and dad's have for having a child. the simple joys of life and raising a child. "it" is used here but i deal with that crap later But your voice was too loud -seems kind of out of place, seems that even though just being their child was enough, there were personal things that the parents or mom or whatever didn't like We like to watch you laughing -once again joys of having a child Picking insects off of plants No time to think of consequences -even the small seemingly insignificant things have a large impact on the world Control yourself Take only what you need from it -"it" is used twice in the song, but never really defined. In my opinion, "it" is "love" (a baby crawling toward love, going toward it; obtaining it) so, control yourself: don't take advantage of other's people's love and trust and whatever, don't push or manipulate them or whatever; take only what you need from it A family of trees wanted to be haunted -kind of out there, but i think it references to people wanting to be together and have people around, and a family of trees is used here. also since it's obvious that there are problems, considering the line "but your voice was too loud" and the next verse, maybe it's also alluding to the family wanting to have some sort of punishment or something. kinda ironic, wanting company but having it be like, punishment company Control yourself Take only what you need from it A family of trees wanted to be haunted The water is warm But it's sending me shivers -the warmth that you share with people you love. i said before that there are obvious problems or whatever in the song. so, even though the water is warm, the person still feels cold and all of that. it could also mean that even though people are open to the person, he can't warm up and is left cold. A baby is born Crying out for attention -like, babies cry because they want attention. and you give that attention because you love the baby not because it's a fucking pain in the ass and someone's gotta do it (i hope). The memories fade Like looking through a ... fogged mirror -memories of childhood are fading, most likely due to problems? Decision to decisions are made and not bought But I thought this wouldn't hurt a lot I guess not -a reference to Picking insects off of plants No time to think of consequences person regrets decisions made in the past (decisions to decisions; an event leads to another event; making a decision leads to more decisions that need to be made based on that decision) |

I used to rule the world; (man had a lot of power) Seas would rise when I gave the word (as i said: a lot of power) Now in the morning I sleep alone, (probably saying he did a lot of women due to his power, but now he's got nothing) Sweep the streets I used to own (lost his power, now leads a humble life. or even better, is cleaning up the mess he made oh snap) I used to roll the dice, (used to gamble and take chances due to his power. as jay-z says: swagger. the man swaggered) Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes (all his enemies were scared) Listen as the crowd would sing, "Now the old kind is dead, Long live the king" (saying that the people didn't hesitate to embrace his rule, and considering they were singing, they were probably pretty psyched) One minute I held the key (he could open any door, could solve any problem, etc.) Next the walls were closed on me (no doors, no use having that key; a problem he couldn't solve) And I discovered that my castles stand Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand (salt and sand are easily swept away; they aren't stable; the foundation on which he had placed his authority and power and whatever weren't stable) I hear Jerusalem bells a'ringing (some religious epiphany or inspiration) Roman cavalry choirs are singing (more religious epiphany or inspiration) Be my mirror, my sword and shield: (reflection of self, things that help defend oneself either aggressively or passively) My missionaries in a foreign field (his religion and missionaries are his mirror, sword and shield) For some reason I can't explain (the man can't explain why) Once you were gone it was never, Never an honest word-- (probably lost a loved one, turned his grief into rage, blah, deceived lots of people and the such) But that was when I ruled the world. (that time and that man he once was is no longer) It was a wicked and wild wind (winds of fate: fate is cruel and unpredictable, hence wicked and wild) Blew down the doors to let me in (fate allowed him to obtain such power that he once had) Shattered windows and the sound of drums: (lots of war; drums of battle, windows most likely break in war) People couldn't believe what I'd become (people were all pissed) Revolutionaries wait for my head on a silver plate (people who wanted change wanted to kill him and end his reign, hence REVOLUTION) Just a puppet on a lonely string (probably an allusion to the wicked and wild wind; the man feels he's just a puppet to fate and powerless) Oh, who would ever wanna be king? (lamenting over the fact that he did such bad things and because he was such a public figure, the repercussions were great) I hear Jerusalem bells a'ringing Roman cavalry choirs are singing Be my mirror, my sword and shield: My missionaries in a foreign field For some reason I can't explain, I know St. Peter won't call my name; (this man is not going to heaven in his opinion) Never an honest word-- But that was when I ruled the world |

| in my opinion, the song isn't really about love. but i can tell you for sure that the fever is a metaphor, but of what i can't tell you. | |

in a nutshell, i think this song is about some person who is obviously going through personal conflict, what it is isn't specified, but obviously it's something that's eating the person away, hence all the crap about "guilt" and all of that it would take a long time for me to type out all the bullcrap i have regarding the meaning of the song, but here's my take on the beginning: "lay my bones at the feet of the ministry" - a request that's explained by "i need the guilt and the company" - like serendipity said, the person is feeling alone, so that's why the company is "needed", though why it's the ministry of all people, who knows. could be that part about "i need the guilt" and also the next line "i need the chance to be judged and then long forgotten" so the person wants to be judged, but how? by those of the church, who, with relation to God, should have some justification in judgement. so the first part establishes that this person is lonely and wants company, but the last part of the verse goes "and then long forgotten", and this being forgotten deal is repeated again, so maybe because this person feels like crap over him/herself or something he/she did, the person doesn't feel as if he/she should be remembered and left alone instead, as if "unworthy" but obviously (with reference to the whole song), since love is so amazingly powerful and crap, the person still yearns for love even through all this other crap. that is just my two cents, don't hate. |
