| Howie Day – Standing In the Sun Lyrics
|
I heard this song back in April when Howie played at Kent. I am still trying to figure out what it means, though. I get a couple of angles from the lyrics... did this person jump into something too fast, and it fell apart ("I know you and I should've known better")? Or was the person too afraid to do something about a situation he/she was in ("standing in the sun/ I should've gone out there")?
Regardless, it's a good song. |

I also think this song is about change. Undercurrent put it well- "leaving the past which you once thought was enjoyable..." The 3rd line in the song ("I looked ahead I'm sure I saw you there") leads me to believe that this person always thought they were going to remain in the same place, with the same people, doing the same thing. Then the lyrics talk about admitting to people what you think will happen, and had you admitted it, they would've told you differently which would have changed your point of view sooner. It's always nice to sit back and think, "Yeah, this is how it's always going to be. Me, my friends, my family, my job." But eventually that wears out and you realize you need to move on just like everyone else has. "It's easier to leave than to be left behind."
A very beautiful song regardless of how you interpret it. |

I totally agree with River Wolf. "Alert status red, but the sun comes up instead"... we're being told that terror is going to happen, and is happening, yet the days keep going on and we can't do anything but watch our men be shipped overseas. I absolutely love this song though. It's filled with anger and truth. |

| Guster – All The Way Up To Heaven Lyrics

I can see the point of view that this song is about a guy preaching to someone, and how being religious can make things better.
However, I saw the meaning of this song as completely different. To me, it sounds like someone is traveling back home to where they can be happy. Their mode of trasnportation is by airplane ("Down is where we came from" ... "And go all the way up to heaven, And go all the way back home"). Maybe he's talking to the flight attendent or pilot, who helps him get back home. I don't exactly know how the last verse fits in with my story though, so I'm probably completely wrong. I guess I'm just a long way from home, and my situation made me perceive the song in a different way.
Great song nonetheless. |

| The Bens – Just Pretend Lyrics

|
I think this song is about a guy supporting a girl, and I'm assuming they're dating although they could just be friends. They have been together for quite a while, and they grow with each other and become more comfortable around each other ("have the years pass by/ It's ok to cry"). She knows him very well and doesn't want anything bad in his life... she wakes him up when she thinks he's having a bad dream... she just wants him to be happy.
I'm not so sure what the "After all/ In the end/ Just pretend" is all about though... any ideas? |

| The Bens – Bruised Lyrics
|
I think this is about a guy trying to get with a girl (or it could be the other way around). He follows her around, and eventually things start happening ("Into the spiral/ Your world and my world"). He thought he was fine living his life the way he did before she came into his life, but once she came in he realized he was wrong ("When I didn't know/ I didn't care/ But now I know"). Apparently things went wrong, and he was hurt by it ("Love just leaves you bruised/ And I've got the scars to prove it").
I absolutely love this song... his voice sounds so nice, and the piano is great! |

If you have Stop All the World Now (the album), look on the inside cover of the cd case- you may have to take it apart... on the left spine, there are lyrics to this song written very small and in a very light font so you might want to use bright lights to read it:
"I'm not so sure what I was dreaming about but I'm sure it was better than this..."
Kind of weird that the lyrics are on the cd case since the song isn't even on the album. |

I agree that the relationship ended. I think she broke it off with him because she didn't see him for all he was ("you take yourself a photograph and laugh at me"). He thought they'd be together for a while, but she obviosuly really hurt him ("step aside from all this anger"). I am not sure if she wants to get back with him, or if he just means he wouldn't if she tried ("ask me should we try again... it's not what i believe in").
The looping on this song is unbelievable. It's one of my favorite songs to see live... especially when he goes into Beams of Light at the end. |

| Howie Day – After You Lyrics
|
|
I think this song is about a relationship that fell through because the other person moved away ("New York City/ Had the craze you wanted"). The person (guy) who didn't leave is still holding on to the hope that things haven't changed even though the other moved away. He thinks she still cares about him and he cares about her ("We both know we feel about this/ Are you hanging on? We both know we feel about this/ But you're feeling oh so wrong") and he refuses that they give up... so he's holding on and "walking after" her. |

I also agree that it's an guy talking about his ex's new boyfriend... kind of like saying "I know her better than you, and she doesn't want you." Has anyone heard the version with U2's "One" mixed in it?
I hope you know that she doesn't mean you
(enter U2 lyrics) Love is a temple
Love the higher love
Love is a temple
Love the higher love
You ask me to enter
Then you make me crawl
But I can't keep holding on
To what you've got
When all you've got is hurt
(back to the song) I don't know where you're coming from...
It's pretty powerful. |

Matt once said this song is about his brother who is an alcoholic and doesn't want to deal with life. People thought he was someone other than who he really was, and when they realized the truth, they weren't impressed. He thought they liked him for who he was instead of who they thought he was, and he didn't know what to do when everyone turned their backs. |

| Matt Nathanson – Lucky Boy Lyrics

|
"You are radiator heat/ You're the winter blankets sleep/ You're the excuse that I use when I want to stop trying" ... those lyrics are unbelievable. This person has been hurt by someone they completely cared about and trusted, only to find out they weren't who they thought they were ("You're not gold to me/ I was wrong"). The whole lucky boy thing... maybe he thinks he's lucky because he realized early enough that he was deceived and got out of the relationship quick enough before getting hurt too bad. |

| Matt Nathanson – Wings Lyrics

Maybe he's not singing from the poing of a girl... maybe he's singing about what a girl said to him. This girl does, however, think highly of whoever she is speaking to because she has been through previous heartache ("Maybe you're all the same/ You say you'll never leave/ Until you're gone again/ And little pieces fall away") but she is surrounded by his love that it sweeps her away ("And I'm drowning/ You open up your wings/ And I'm gone."
I think it's beautiful. |

I really wish more people knew about Matt Nathanson. He's got some great music and he's funny in concert. This song is awesome... to me this song is about an old love that you just can't get over. Maybe you haven't seen this person in a long time, and you are now in the same area, seeing them occasionally and the idea of getting back together is silently floating around ("And I saw/ Pictures in my head/ And I swear I saw you opening up again"). Everything would be alright again if things went back to the way they were when they were together. |

I agree with atarisfan about a relationship ending because of summer. I am sort of in this position now... I have been seeing this guy from school, and we thought being away from each other for the summer wouldn't be that hard, but it was ("dizzy from sun stroke"). And now I am going to Florida for a few months instead of back to school... and I am "crossing my fingers and praying for winter" so I can see him again. |

I never looked at it the way you all have... I kind of saw it as this guy in a relationship with a girl who is spreading rumors about him while he is on the road, or maybe rumors about them cuz he says "I'd like to think what I have is real." And he tells her to sort out her confusion on her own while he is on the road. And I think the girl is always expecting too much ("You'll always want more").
I dunno, that is just my take. :) I saw NFG play this song today... very energetic! |

This was the first TBS song I ever heard, and it automatically hit home. All I could see in my mind was the guy leaving my house to drive back home (3 hours away). Each time he left, he'd come back to kiss me one last time. And then he would call me from the road just to say he missed me. I would do anything to have him back here and prove to him that distance can work. :( Antonio's voice only makes this song better. |

I love hearing this song! It's so soft, yet so full of anxiety and confusion. He obviously really wants this girl, but she is dating another guy (who sounds like he doesn't give her much attention). The guy knows it's wrong to mess around with her, but then he thinks if no one knows, it won't matter. "Hiding in desire"... great line!

I'm not going to argue whether Dave's or Jimi's version of this song is better... considering that these lyrics are posted as being Dave's... you want to comment on Jimi's version, then do it under his name. Anyhow, this song is AMAZING live. Not only can you feel the emotion coming from the vocals and instruments, but the crowd goes nuts as well.
