Dear Reader – Never Goes Lyrics 13 years ago
I'd say it means that she was alone the whole time, she just forgot about it for a while. 'Alone never goes' suggests to me that no matter what she does and who she's with, she will still feel alone.
Totally agree about it being a wonderful song, these guys are criminally under-appreciated.

The Company Band – Djinn and Pentatonic Lyrics 14 years ago
Now these are some damn good lyrics, I always expect amazing lyrics from Neil but these are incredible.
Most of the references are pretty obvious but there are some awesome subtle ones too.

'The alchemical comic stoned again in his class.' Alchemy is a 'science' (supposedly) that is famous for getting nowhere and being completely pointless. Given that most of the song is about quantum mechanics, I'd say it is comparing quantum physicists to alchemists. Quantum mechanics often seems so ridiculous you seriously wonder if the people who came up with it all were on drugs. I know I have before. This stoned comical alchemist is a quantum physicist.

'Boom, subatomic, the singularity's here' A black hole is formed when mass is compressed to subatomic scales (due to its own weight) and forms a singularity. I'm not sure if there actually is a boom but it happens just as fast.

'Hey rolling collider, the horizon is near' The LHC is circular (rolling?) and some think it will make black holes and destroy the earth. Horizon is almost certainly referring to the event horizon, the boundary around a black whole from which no information (or anything else) can escape. Except Hawking radiation but that is different.

'But one has to wonder, are we in or are we out?' Perhaps refers to quantum mechanical uncertainty, where something can be in two states (and even two places) at once until you check.

'Djinn and pentatonic all night long'
Djinn are Arabic supernatural beings, from where we get the word Genie. Pentatonic is a scale of music and to be honest I have no idea how this relates. The Djinn bit is probably just pointing out that quantum mechanics seems supernatural i guess?

'The good doctor's box, what a terrible riddle.
That poor damn cat split right down the middle.'
This refers to Schrödinger's Cat thought experiment. Basically there is a cat in a box hooked up to some cruel killing machine, a Geiger counter and a source of radiation, blah blah quantum mechanics (you can look it up if you want), and the whole point is the cat is not just either dead or alive until you look at it, it is actually both dead and alive. Split right down the middle.

'In the void it rambles, rattles and rolls
while the comical alchemist grinds up his bones.'
Not too sure what the first line is about, the second line is just saying how the quantum physicist is doing something useless (like an alchemist grinding bones).

So yeah, the song is about quantum mechanics (or just advanced physics in general, although everything referenced involves quantum mechanics) and how messed up it is, to the point that we could just be making a 'terrible blunder' chasing these djinns all day long. At least, this is my conclusion. Impressive song all the same.

Clutch – Sleestak Lightning Lyrics 14 years ago
I think germophobe has it, completely insane and hilarious paranoia. Some don't reply to his insane letters, most send cops. Neil is a genius, it may not make a particular point, or tell all that much of a story, but damn can he write some killer lines. 'But I have a tazer and night vision goggles, Costco rolls of black duct tape'

Clutch – Freakonomics Lyrics 14 years ago
Freakonomics is a reasonably famous book about applying economic theories to explain unusual situations, in which it can explain some otherwise baffling results. Maybe an allusion to the GFC, saying how only the freaks have all the answers, but 'they're gonna lose and they're not gonna like it, watch it happen, supernatural act.' I'm sure thinking about it more might get you somewhere a bit more concrete, this is as far as i've gotten.

Clutch – Oregon Lyrics 14 years ago
Oh man the spoken bit makes me laugh, it is so ridiculous. If Neil wrote a book it would be the most trippy, insane and incredible piece of fiction ever devised. 'Hail Draco, King of the Dragon-men!'

Promise And The Monster – Sheets Lyrics 14 years ago
Not particularly sure what the song means, but it is my favourite on the album, although it only just beats Night Out.

Does anyone know who John James Hewitt is, or what 'The Orchard' is? Is it a book, a movie, a song? Google couldn't help me on this one.

Great song anyway.

Seems to be about selling out, prostituting yourself for cash. And how you deserve no pity for it.

Promise And The Monster – Light Reflecting Papers Lyrics 15 years ago
It could be. Her lyrics are so mysterious though, it's so hard to tell what she is talking about. But you can definately tell how she feels about it. She said somewhere (I can't remember where I heard it) that the lyrics are intensely personal to her, so she keeps them intentionally vague so she doesn't reveal too much.

The Tallest Man on Earth – It Will Follow the Rain Lyrics 15 years ago
Not so sure what the meaning to the song is, but the video to it is the most gorgeous thing I have seen in a long time.

Ghinzu – Cold Love Lyrics 15 years ago
Seemse to me to be about a cold, enemotional yet attractive lady who is very proud. After sleeping with the singer however she becomes ready for love, losing her 'gloss beneath the sheets'. Awesome song and a killer opening track.

My personal favourite on the album, about propagating violence as far as I can see.

Gardenian – Sonic Death Monkey Lyrics 15 years ago
Perhaps this song is about genetic alteration of people for selfish needs. Most of the lyrics seem to support this. Exactly where a sonic death monkey comes into it however i am unsure. Perhaps the chorus is refering to the singer, one of the last unmodified creatures left on earth (free) dancing with a sonic death monkey (one of the creatures created in the genetic modification). A bit shakey I know.

No matter what though, sonic death monkey is THE best name for a song ever. Seriously, I am suprised so few comments on such a good band.

Promise And The Monster – Antarktis Lyrics 15 years ago
"Antarktis is about two persons who are in love, but disabled to talk to each other, because of their nervousness. It's about the cold that can be felt in the air when such moments flicker by." From the mouth of Billie Lindahl herself, excellent artist that should be more widely recognised.

The Haunted – Rivers Run Lyrics 15 years ago
Seems to be about the helplessness of outrunning destiny.
The first verse seems to be talking about the shit that goes on during life.
But 'there's no place to hide
There's no shelter so far away
All rivers end in the same sea'
No matter how you try to hide or run away, all rivers end in the same lake. No matter what we achieve in life, we all end up in the same place. You cant outrun it.

Petty thieves
All hail, the one percent with a bullwhip résumé.
Die slowly, in weeping misery
and drape the bitch in a steel plate eulogy.
This bit talks to the poor, the petty thieves, hailing the richer one percent. Which is a fairly common theme in Dolving's work.

Skull and bones, no hope.
Burning fields and the dead game is up and go.
All my life I wanted something right,
but today sure ain't my time to shine.
It's all falling to pieces but you know
No matter how hard you fail, how wrong the world goes, all rivers end in the same cold lake.

You came so close you'll never know.
No matter how close you get to anything, you will never know once you are dead.

Clutch – Rising Son Lyrics 15 years ago
It should be Captain Beyond in the first verse, a reference to the 70s band. So is the line "Now lets go dancing madly backwards While on a sea of air", which is actually one of their song names. Aside from that I cant see any connection, let alone a meaning to the song, but it is fun to listen to.

Clutch – Mice and Gods Lyrics 15 years ago
Adding to what Cape Kid said, which pretty much covered it IMO, the following lines pretty much explain the approach to religion.

Love child in the reeds. Take a sample for the breed.
Should have left him in the stream. Cooing at the smitten queen.
The love child in the reeds is Moses. All he is good for is to take a sample for the breed, we should have left him in the stream cooing at the smitten queen. Basically indicating that such religious figures are only valued for their genetic material in this future. Religion serves no purpose.

Clutch – Nickel Dime Lyrics 15 years ago
Sounds like a song about colonisation. A pretty cool song in my opinion, cant believe no other comments. Goes on about how the colonists were messing up north america, then mentions how they land on Europa (which is a moon of jupiter btw). And the foreman has the notion "This ain't nothing we ain't done before!". I love it.

Machinae Supremacy – Reanimator (March of the Undead III) Lyrics 15 years ago
I have to say I agree with missjaxter. Pretty much covers the song for me.

The sun fades beyond the water as we bring on the night.
Our inaction brings on the darkness. It is our fault, because we will not 'stand out from the rows Of wayward and misguided silent souls.'

"I fall asleep and fade away
In the dark.
Too tired to keep going,
I want to remain this way. It's better to do nothing but wait.
It's better to just being like this."
Hits the nail on the head really. I love this song and its lyrics.

Machinae Supremacy – Ghost (Beneath the Surface) Lyrics 15 years ago
To me it sounds like he is pretending to be someone that he isn't, and hates it.

Every raindrop looks the same
They fall without pretending through the night.
The raindrops are also other people, they may all look the same but at least they are not pretending. He has to pretend just to fit in.

But this is someone else
I am just beneath the surface.
This pretty much explains the song for me. His 'real' self is just beneath the surface of his constructed image, but noone ever sees it. Which hurts.

In the pouring rain
I'm bleeding, I die.
And I'm crying in pain
I'm bleeding, I die.
Because if noone ever sees your 'true' self, it pretty much is gone. The 'good' person you may be inside doesn't exist if all people see is the asshole you pretend to be.

Passenger – Circles Lyrics 15 years ago
All of Anders lyrics leave so much up for interpretation, they can really mean a lot of things to a lot of people.
To me, it could almost be about expressing yourself. 'He' could be just the inner part of the singer. The singer build up the courage to express himself, to introduce 'him' to the others:

Pacing around in circles
Talking to himself
He could see teh beauty there
Talking to another one

The singer wants to show this other side of himself.

She came to see our city
She came in the dead of the night
I tried to introduce him
But she got scared and ran away

She did not come to see him, she is just visitor passing through. The other side of the singer frightens her.

They came, thousands from far away
They came a sunny day
I tried to introduce him
Now I'm talking to myself
I tried to introduce him
Now I am the one talking to myself

Now after showing all these others, the other side of him is just too uncomfortable with being exposed. Leaving the singer unable to express this other side of himself, left talking to himself.

As I said, it leaves so much up to how you look at it, which I love about Anders' lyrics.
