M.I.A. – Born Free Lyrics 15 years ago
Awesome song...I like it 'cause it encourages you to think for yourself. There's all these systems out there trying to tell you what to do, promising you some reward in the end if you buy their bullshit. Whether it be the money-greedy corpotocracy (manmade towers, suit-ed interviews), new-age hippie spiritualism (uptopian dogma), or cash-crazed celebrity culture (money, hoochies), the end result is all the same: do what they want, not what you feel. And the video is mind-blowing...it takes the concept to an extreme and warns what the world might be like if we all totally ascribed to mass, totaliterian fear-mongering.

I also dig the diss on hip-hop/dance lyrics when she's putting down the money/hoochies/fakeness...might just be me, but I totally thought about all the drunk, lame people grinding to Paper Planes at bars for the past few years (myself included)...it must be hard to have your tune become commodotized like that.

Okkervil River – Bruce Wayne Campbell Interviewed on the Roof of the Chelsea Hotel, 1979 Lyrics 15 years ago
He built a glass pyramid on top of the Chelsea, so I think that is somewhat where the "glass room" is coming from...but it also serves as a nice parallel to how public his life was at the time of his career imploding.

I think the song has a lot to do with him reflecting on his career and this alter-ego that the record company and the media help create for him...I hear the last verse as Jobriath (alter-ego or who he was then) deciding to "leave this world behind" or whatever, and the starship stops to pick up Bruce Wayne Campbell (his real self) and take him along, too. The narrator is looking at himself and these different personas/lives that he's been through, and he's ready to just fly away from it all.

Bienvenido a Miami

Like the Will Smith song, the whole song is a bunch of references to other songs...like background being Lil' Wayne's Lollipop...

Travis – More Than Us Lyrics 16 years ago
I just heard this song for the first time in years...completely forgot how great it was...

And I have a totally different take on it...I always thought it was loosely based on Atlas Shrugged imagery...or could fit with that book pretty well...

I think the "love" in the verses is less romantic and more brotherly...it's about a guy who finds himself in a family, or community, or world where he's surrounded by ppl who depend on him, but he's getting sick of lending a hand...especially since he already feels like he's "holding up the world"...

The "fly away" part seems to express his need to leave, but he wants an assurance he'll still be able to keep in contact with the people he values in his current situation...(it would also fit nicely with the Atlas Shrugged elements of the Hidden Valley and Dagny's plane crash, but maybe I'm just being a little too hopeful there).

Vampire Weekend – Oxford Comma Lyrics 17 years ago
Could the tape my conversations reference be to Bush? Didn't Lil' Jon release a remix of Kayne's "Bush hates black people" line? Or maybe he means my favorite short newscaster Jon Stuart...

I could see any uptight person who gets angry about Oxford commas having a shit fit over the use of Lil' to mean little.
