12 Stones – The Way I Feel Lyrics 17 years ago
Though I don't feel that this is a website to necessarily debate how to define the type of band that is singing it, I do want to touch on what you all are saying. I agree that there are bands that have all christian members, and yet are not defined as christian. Open a CD cover and read the personal thanks from each member, many people thank God in them. Hell, I used to be a major hip-hop and pop kind of fan and all of the Destiny's Child members thank God in every one of their personal thank-yous, but no one has ever defined them as a Christian band, BECAUSE they didn't sing direct praise songs, though they do do an awesome version of Amazing Grace.

That being said, more directly related to this song, the first time I heard it I thought it was a love song(though the first time I heard it was also when listening to a mixed CD that my then-boyfriend had given me, so I'm sure my perception was skewed) and I definitely think its valid to interpret it that way, but, there are so many blatantly christianity and God-related verses, that I can't JUST see it that way anymore.

For example:
"Lately I've been wandering
Off the narrow path"
>The narrow path is the path to God. Its the difficult path. Its the hard to find path. It IS the road less traveled by. Google "The Narrow Path" and I can guarantee you that multiple christian websites will pop up.
"The world I know is pulling me
More and more each day
I feel like the odd man out as I begin to pray"
>This is talking about the materialistic world. The world of "worldly" desires. He talks directly about praying, in a world full of non-believers.
"In the midst of darkness Lord
My spirit calls for you"
>His spirit is calling for the Lord. This is what makes it undeniable to me that this song is a call to God. If this was simply a love song it would be just as easy to have the lyrics be, "In the midst of darkness, LOVE/My HEART calls for you" When you're talking to a lover you talk about your heart. When you're talking to God, though you can talk about your heart, you most definitely talk about your spirit.

Though I am a christian, I'm not the elitist type, so I would also like to add that it makes me extremely happy that everyone can enjoy 12 Stones and many other christian bands music.

Automatic Loveletter – Hush Lyrics 17 years ago
I think you guys have a point, but I interpretted it a bit differently. I don't think its as much that she's leaving and he thinks the relationship is fine and is upset that she's leaving, I think its more that she's finally realised that he doesn't actually love her anymore and the only reason he's staying in the relationship is because its become what he's used to.

So, I interpretted these parts as meaning this...

"You color my eyes red"
>He's making her cry
"Your love's not live
It's dead"
>His love is gone
"And lovers become trends"
>Being together for them has become like the latest fashion, so they keep it going even though its not really what they want.

Its the "calming before the storm" because its the peacful time in which she's realised what she has to do but hasn't done it yet, and when she does, its going to be huge.
She doesn't want to wake him up because she doesn't want to deal with the "storm" that would be coming if he were to know she was leaving.
Idk, I may be wrong, and this may be what you were saying and I was just reading it differently. Idk.

And might I add, the guy in the movie is very hot and his snake bites make him even more so. mmmhmmm

Bayside – A Rite of Passage Lyrics 17 years ago
"So what if I'm a sinner/I've got black spots on my liver/And cancer grown on both my lungs?"
I love these lines. Its like, so what if I sin, drink, and smoke? I'm opening up my life to you. I'm letting you "see my selfworth beneath" so don't judge my mishaps, wrong doings, and indescretions. Because you wouldn't even know about them if I wasn't open and honest about them with you and the rest of the world. OK, so maybe I delved into that a bit deeper, but oh well.

I also agree with you clarelvsmychem and isacult. That line is so powerful, made even more so by the fact that unlike the rest of the song that is sang in a powerful voice, its ang so meekly, but with so much expression and feeling.

Bayside – (POP)Ular SciencE Lyrics 17 years ago
Any ideas on the true meanings of the line, "You can't lay brick on wet cement or build castles out of sand"

All of the song is fairly straight forward, but those two lines are the two that scream at me the most simply because they are written so purposely backwards. You DO lay brick on wet cemement. You CAN build castles out of sand. So why say thats not true? Personally, I think its because he's trying to describe just how backwards the music industry is(granted, thats what he's saying throughout the entire song, but in this song these are my two favorite lines because he's pretty much using sarcasm to get his point across). The blatant falsehood in his two statements there make me want to go to a beach...or build a wall.

Of course, it being Bayside, every lyric is amazing.

Bayside – Devotion and Desire Lyrics 17 years ago
I’ve interpreted this many different ways, and every way hit me like a brick which is why its inked into me for forever. A lot of your posts make perfect sense, and a lot are thoughts that I’ve had, but even though a few of you have touched on this, I don’t think its been explored deeply enough…
Isn’t it possible that this song isn’t his rant against the woman in his life, but its his rant against himself? When I first heard it, my initial thought was that it was him expressing his anger against whatever woman had broken his heart, but the more I read the lyrics and focus on HOW its written, it seems more like an internal struggle and anger.
Look at all the times he says “I’ve” done this or “I’m” like this. All this I, I, I nonsense screams at me that he’s mad at himself. Some of the lines that make this seem more likely to me are:
“I‘m trying to create something that‘s not there.”
>He’s stating straight out that he knows there’s nothing there, but he’s pretending there is
“I was just so happy to be out of my shell again, don‘t think that I really cared for who or what.
So for now I‘ll just have to keep myself shut.”
>It’s the first time he’s opening up to someone in a really long time, and instead of actually looking at who he’s opening up to, he just so happy that he has someone to talk to that he’s going to ignore the negatives, even though he knows they’re there and knows what they are.
“I know the spark inside your eyes was just the match I used to set myself on fire.”
>It was the first person he felt that spark with in a really long time, and he was just so…excited, or happy(or whatever other word you want to use to describe that feeling when you start liking someone) that he blew it WAY out of proportion and started a fire inside himself with that little spark.
But in all honesty, no one can be ready for a real, deep, meaningful relationship after being that closed off for that long. It’s something you have to ease into. So, when he says, “You‘re not ready, you‘re not ready. Please stop acting like you are.” I think its him yelling at himself. The person he’s become since meaning this woman is someone he doesn’t know, and everything that comes out of his mouth is empty words(“My mouth’s shooting blanks”), and he’s become vulnerable because he doesn’t know how to explain to himself, the girl, or anyone else that he isn’t actually who he’s being. Its unbearable because this façade he has over him is leaving him even more open to hurt, heartache, criticism and pain than he was when he had walls up and he was hiding inside his shell. It’s not until later that he even comes clean with himself and realizes that he’s been lying to himself and this woman about his devotion to her and his desire to be this person he’s pretending to be.
Then again maybe I’m just reading too far into this, though I think, it being Bayside music and everything, that you can never read too far into it.
