| Honestly, this song has always sounded like it was about domestic abuse to me. Nothing to do with Bush. | |
| Dispatch – Prince Of Spades Lyrics | 17 years ago |

Someone's probably already said all this, but the "few verses" Braddigan added are in fact from the Alice in Chains song "Rooster", which Layne from AIC wrote about his father's time in Vietnam. This is why it's re-titled "Spades and Chains". Originally the suit of spades represented soldiers (hearts = priests, clubs = farmers, diamonds = traders/craftsmen), and in folk superstitions spades is the suit of death. American soldiers stuck the ace of spades into their helmets for luck in Vietnam, too. The imagery of cards and the imagery of medieval/feudal royalty of course mix well ("did you take me for a fool or for a wife?") and there's a sort of nursery-rhyme theme to the repeating of the "one by one they do fall" part. |

| Rammstein – Seemann (English) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Actually, I think Balkazar's 1st meaning was the closest so far. When soldiers are dying on the battlefield, it's very commonly said that they call for their mother. The references to the Greek underworld would, in this case, serve to reinforce the idea of death on a mass scale, and the references to autumn are a sort of indication that all the flowers have been cut and placed on young men's graves. If this is so then the lantern certainly symbolizes the ideals they went to war over, and the helmsman is the victorious commander and/or sole survivor of a nasty battle, either wishing to reach out to the enemy soldiers he has killed or wishing he could have saved his own compatriots. | |
| Rammstein – Ich Will Lyrics | 17 years ago |

I think that the video and the song each ahve a separate, yet related, meaning. The video is clearly a media critique, as well as being intended to amuse the fans (because IMO, Rammstein has always been about the fans). I love it, even though Flake is my favourite member. The song itself, however, is likely a direct message from Till to the fans. I want you guys to believe me, I want you all to understand me, I want all your energy, etc. And then, when the audience answers his questions (we see you, we hear you, we feel you, etc) and you think he'd be content, he says: I don't understand you. |

Not only that, but Flake is almost always the one who dies (Ohne Dich being an exception) in the videos where someone dies, and onstage he's always the one being dildo-raped, fried, or kicked by Till. As for the song, I'm pretty sure the lack of sex, the overweightness, and all that is metaphor. To me the concept of the whole Reise, Reise album is about tearing down your screw-ups to start over, symbolized by the theme of travel. |

| Rammstein – Sonne (English) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I can see how this would be about an overprotective mother, a legendary boxer or a nuclear bomb, but here's a new one: To me, Sonne has always been about that moment right before you tell someone a secret about yourself. It could be anything from coming out of closet, to confessing love for that person, to telling your significant other that you don't love them anymore, or even admitting to past crimes. The song talks about how "everyone is waiting for the light" and "the world counts loudly to ten"- Till is saying that the narrator has just said "I'm going to tell you a secret" and now whoever he said that to is apprehensive to find out what it is. The sun shining out of his hands represents the fact that hints of the secret have threatened to reveal themselves in the past, like sunlight shining from between his fingers. This sun can burn or be blinding, meaning the narrator fears that his secret might hurt the person he's telling it to or change that person's perception of him. In the second verse and the end of the chorus, Till says the sun "will not set tonight" and it "will never fall from the sky"- that is, once the narrator tells his secret, it will never be a secret again, it will always be in plain sight. In the third verse, he finally tells his secret and it presses heavily on the chest of the other person- the knowledge wieghs down their conscience. After hearing it, they're no longer waiting anxiously, and are now very upset and disappointed- "it lets you go hard to the floor". However, now the narrator is the one anxiously waiting for the other person's reaction and so, once again, "the world counts loudly to ten". |

| Bad Religion – Social Suicide Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Atheist that I am, I find it ironic that I'm the only one to pick up on the seemingly biblical meaning of the furnace. One of the most common stories bible-thumpers quote is three Jewish guys who were ordered to bow down to some idol or other by a Babylonian king. They refused, so he had a furnace turned up so high that the dudes who carried out his orders got burned to death in the process. The three guys still refused, so he tossed them in, and supposedly they were miraculously not burned. Now despite the fact that I know Bad Religion don't follow Christian bullshit, I still think this is a nod toward that. The song is talking about someone who wants to change things for the better, mobilize the people against Bush perhaps, which is what's meant by "create a fresher atmosphere". However, he knows that doing so will result in him being forcibly silenced (possibly killed) by the very government he opposes. |

| Pantera – Cemetery Gates Lyrics | 17 years ago |

The song is, without any question, about the death of a grilfriend. "I'm a man cut in half in this world" refers to the fact that his 'better half', as the saying goes, is no longer of this world. |

| The Fray – How To Save A Life Lyrics | 17 years ago |

Hey folks... I hope I'm not about to get in trouble for this. It's related to the themes of the song, but it might be a bit off-topic- i'm asking for help. I have a very close friend who recently disappeared for two and a half days. There were cops looking for her, we were within minutes of putting a message out on the news by the time she came home. So many people had called her cell phone (which she didn't answer) that by the time I called there was no data space left to leave a voicemail. I stopped by her house every day and checked with her parents until the day she came home. The first time that I spoke with her after she came back, I demanded an explanation. I didn't get one. I told her I wouldn't speak to her again if she didn't tell me what was going on. She refused to make the choice, she kept stalling for time and claiming that everyone had overreacted. Eventually, she switched to promising she'd never do it again. I know she's "experimented" with drugs before, and I've also been informed that she drinks regularly and a slew of other problems. I never followed through on my threat not to talk to her because my dad (the only family I have, the only adult I respect, and the first to hear about this whole drama) convinced me that she needed her friends more than she needed anything else. Now whenever me and her talk it's about little things, how's the weather and what's new and crap like that. I've spoken to her while she was high a few times and just tried not to think about it. But I'm worried about her. And I suppose I came here because I'm trying to do what the character in this song tried. So what I'm asking is... how does someone save a life? |
