A breakup song...?
Andrew Bird tends to move away from complete and explainable meaning in order to allow the listener to come to their own conclusions, or just enjoy the sound of the words. But, as he's mentioned in interviews, much of this album was written after a breakup. The lines in the verses seem to say that he can see that everything around him is supposed to be fine, but there's just a deep feeling that it will never go away.

Not 'American Psycho'- it's 'Less Than Zero' (also by Bret Easton Ellis), unless it's in both.
"The week before I leave, I listen to a song by an L.A. composer about the city. I would listen to the song over and over, ignoring the rest of the album. It wasn't that I liked the song so much; it was more that it confused me and I would try to decipher it. For instance, I wanted to know why the bum was on his knees. Someone told me that the bum was so grateful to be in the city instead of somewhere else. I told this person that I thought he missed the point and the person told me, in a tone I found slightly conspiratorial, "No, dude... I don't think so." |

There's been quite a lot of backlash about this song, and I think it's wonderful as well. It's positive, but not too positive.

Doh... I thought it was about Morrissey himself, maybe written after a particularly nasty concert. I think I'd rather it was about him than the rolling stones, because it does seem that it's starting to fit for him as well, even if *I* think his new work is still great. |
