IAMX – The Stupid, The Proud Lyrics 16 years ago
Chris says this song has to do with organised religion, which would make sense.

Am I the only person who thinks it's very similar to President? The lyrics of President speak out against conformity and blindly following conventions, and this song attacks blind faith and dedication to religion, which can be similar. Both messages are delivered in a taunting way. This song, however, is more malicious, and musically darker. It's like the same idea behind President more focused and multiplied in intensity.

I love it. If I were to arrange this album in order of preference, this would be in the top 3.

Manic Street Preachers – This Joke Sport Severed Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this is about failure in relationships and failure socially. an admission of defeat, deciding that that area of one's life is just a lost cause, because all attempts end in hurt. Nicky said in a recent interview that in Richey's later lyrics, he seemed to have come to a lot of conclusions, and this is one of them. it's a side of Richey that you probably could have assumed was there, but he didn't dwell on it in his lyrics, so it's saddening to hear this and realise he was more affected by it than he had let on.

Chris Corner – You're the Conversation (I'm the Game) Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this is about when you've fallen for someone, but you can't tell if they love you the same or if they're just using you.

To "carry a torch" for someone is an old-fashioned slang term for infatuation, if I'm not mistaken.

Sneaker Pimps – Lightning Field Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this is about being attacked, dismissed or tossed aside, whether by another person or by society as a whole.

The narrator seems extremely hurt, but so far gone that he's responding with almost demented defiance. In some places he seems upset, like he's wondering what he did to deserve it, or how he could have prevented it. The lines beginning with "strike me down" seem to be saying that he's already been damaged so much that he doesn't care what happens to him next.

Chris Corner's voice in this song is one of the creepiest things I've ever heard... the way he conveys the conflicted combination of emotions is perfect. It's like listening to someone who had the experience talk about it minutes after the realization. It's amazing that a song recorded in a studio can be THAT expressive.

Ours – Mercy Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree that it's a great entrance. Ever since this song came out, it's the song I play for people when I'm introducing them to Ours for the first time. The intro is so explosive and dramatic, and when the vocals start, those first three notes could put anyone on the floor.

The first verse has been the subject of a lot of speculation from myself and my friends and family who listen to Ours. I think it's an example of someone going down the wrong path in life and not knowing what he wants, which is supported by the rest of the song.

The verses seem to also be about people wasting their lives or dedicating themselves entirely to some blind hope, maybe waiting for personal success or happiness to come to them. The line "it's hard pretending that it's not, still we're reaching, what do we want" is also about this.

It's about people searching for the wrong things in life, spiraling out of control, destroying themselves beyond repair. The line "mercy for the meek" is saying that society in general is so misguided and out of touch that the only way for them to survive is for life to be kind to THEM.

The "I won't let you go" part seems like it's about not abandoning hope even in this situation. Maybe the person it's addressed to is the only source of hope for the narrator, and he still has a feeling that they can get through it.

I would say that this is the album Mercy's equivalent of Sometimes. The subject matter is different, but they both have the same feeling of futility, but with some inkling of hope.

I think this is Jimmy Gnecco's best vocal performance on Distorted Lullabies.

Ours – Places Lyrics 17 years ago
I feel it's necessary to explain how I view the chorus before I explain the rest of the song:

Alright, alright
My feet keep on taking me back, back, back to those places
Alright, alright
My knees keep on shaking from fright, fright, fright

Jimmy Gnecco has said he wrote this song about fear of commitment, but to me it sounds like it could fit ANY negative, debilitating behavior or thought pattern that's difficult to escape from, like pessimism, for example. This is made clear in the chorus: "my feet keep on taking me back to those places" is referring to sinking into said negative behavior and feeling unable to control it. "my knees keep on shaking from fright" is pretty obvious... fear of the consequences of this behavior, or the future it'll bring.

Past love died, as she cried, I saw beauty
Girls wished for boys and scared them away
As I saw beauty

I think the first verse is the narrator analyzing the behavior of others, people who dive into life or relationships, and thinking that even if they end up hurt, their way of life is bolder and more fulfilling than his.

Scared and cold, now you're old
Time thaws, but you'll break
There's a hole in my soul
How much more will it take?

The first two lines of the second verse could be the narrator addressing himself, feeling like time is passing by him as he remains static due to all the chances he misses.

I saw, I saw
It moved all of the gray aside

I think this line is the up among all the downs, a positive moment for the narrator when he feels like his life is made better just by looking up and not worrying. The fact that there's another chorus after it just demonstrates how hard it is to escape from negative behavior like fear or depression, because when you have those kinds of issues, the fleeting "high" caused by positive experiences seems far away once again when you realize you actually haven't changed.

This song is extremely significant to me. Definitely my favorite Ours song ever.
