I Mother Earth – Raspberry Lyrics 12 years ago
This was on a site, so take it with a grain of salt. It could be completely accurate and true, or it could be total horseshit.

"Kim
January 31, 2013 / 19:16

Edwin was born in 1965. I should know- I went out with him for 10 yrs. -the I Mother Earth years. He quit the band because it wasn't what he got into music for in the 1st place & wanted to be happy making music. He left- Jag & Chris didn't kick him out. He actually beat IME for best video w/ his 1st solo effort with the son. "Hang Ten"- I was the girl in that video. Wish IME could've gotten along & made it work- they were damn good! Now I wish him only the best & he seems to like being at Tattoo since he's been there for about 10 yrs. Whatever gets you through the night!!"

So, if you go by her words, he lies about his age and is straight, or at least bi. :)

They Might Be Giants – Particle Man Lyrics 12 years ago
I know this is ancient, like internet dead-sea-discs ancient, but you're probably subconsciously harkening back to your childhood and an episode of Tiny Toon Adventures that used the song to do a pro wrestling skit with similar characters ;)

Catatonia – Dazed, Beautiful and Bruised Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is about relationships suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. Where she feels so badly for this person who clearly has had a very unfortunate, difficult, or abusive upbringing and a hard road they traveled. So badly she sinks to their level, trying to get inside their head and understand them in order to attempt to rehabilitate them and earn their trust. The chorus points to this, as she drudges up her past memories to identify with the partner, only to turn it into some sort of competition. Everyone knows someone like that, who is constantly depressed or looking someone to bring down to their level and guilt trip. Then one day you finally get sick of their antics and scream at them that they're not the only ones who have endured hardships. She alternates between wanting to help this person and make them personal project of sorts, a 'fixer-upper', and growing exhausted of all the emotional investment her efforts bring.

Zuckerbaby – Andromeda Lyrics 12 years ago
This is easily one of the most sweepingly beautiful, almost operatic pieces of music that sadly was too overlooked. If there was a modern day Queen epic rock ballad, this would be it.

Anywho, I think the lyrics are inspired by someone personal to him. So a lot of it looks obtuse to us because we don't personally know who it's dedicated to. It definitely has a lot to do with people's inclination to instant gratification. The first verse talking about her love of tattoos, tattoos are something instant gratification. Bubblegum is likely a metaphor or euphemism for something else, possibly drugs or alcohol. All of these things(substance abuse, body modification, or even something as simply as an innocent sugar rush) have the common thread of vices that supply that instant fix and are highly addictive. The singer is sadly and ironically reflecting that the same body art that makes her so breathtakingly beautiful to him should have been a red flag to foreshadow all her issues and eventual breakdown.

"If this is heaven we'll be alright
If this is hell it’s way past midnight."
One of my favorite lyrics EVER. Also alludes to her vices, how in the beginning phases it was perfect, it was so exhilarating and exciting. Heaven. Look later down the road, she's made some bad choices and is now in too deep to turn back or surrender. "In hell, it's way past midnight." It conveys perfectly his struggle of being by her side the whole way and sharing the ecstasy and subsequent suffering, and the tone seems very much like he wants to do more to help, but knows he can't pull her out all by himself, and almost conceding.

"It's a mistake now Andromeda
It's much too late for Andromeda
Can't see through this cloud of euphoria
It's a mistake now Andromeda
Don't choke on the stardust baby"

Reiterating the theme of regret but being too far gone or oblivious to the issue to resolve it now or achieve closure. The space allusions are a popular theme in songs about drug use. See a lot of Blind Melon, RHCP, I Mother Earth or Edwin songs, they like to do that too. Since a lot of illicit drugs, particularly heroin, hallucinogens, ecstasy, and speed, made you feel like you're either flying or floating in a different plane altogether. The overall mood seems almost mourning but as if he was too perceptive of the initial stages of her demise to be surprised enough to really feel for her. Almost angry even. But there's still a strong love there too keep him there and extend a hand out. It's the classic scenario of a troubled lover you want to 'save', but acquiescing you can't. So you have few choices, and none of them are really ideal from all sides. You can join them in their decay, you can untether yourself and leave them, or you can simply watch them plunge into darkness helplessly.

PJ Harvey – This Is Love Lyrics 12 years ago
How in 10 years has no one mentioned these are the totally wrong ass lyrics? lol Not even Polly's! The lyrics above are for Texas' "Beliefs" XD The CORRECT lyrics:

I can't believe life's so complex
When I just wanna' sit here and watch you undress
This is love that I'm feeling
Does it have to be a life full of dread?
I wanna' chase you round the table, I wanna' touch your head
This is love that I'm feeling
I can't believe that the axis turns on suffering
When you taste so good
I can't believe that the axis turns on suffering
While my head burns
This is love that I'm feeling
Even in the summer, even in the spring
You can never get too much of a wonderful thing

You're the only story that I never told
You're my dirty little secret, wanna' keep you so
Come on out, come on over, help me forget
Keep the walls from falling on me, tumbling in
- This is love that I'm feeling

Better Than Ezra – Return of the Post Moderns Lyrics 12 years ago
ScreenNameNeeded is most likely correct. This song is one of Kevin's infamous exercises in non sequitur. Anyone who's seen a BTE live show will undoubtedly corroborate this, as Kevin is very given to improvisation during sets and sometimes forcing Michael and Tom to indulge in those whims XD

I am amazed at how even his spontaneous drabble writing is creative and strangely eloquent. As another mentioned, his inclusion of 'onomatopoeia', for example. Half of these lyrics seem like they refer to something or stand alone, leading me to believe this song is in fact a hodgepodge of lyrical fragments Kevin had started on separate occasions, but couldn't 'gel' into one cohesive piece. ("Fire bombing Dresden" as a Vonnegut reference; "Ten cent lovers, underneath the covers, riding on a wet dream" is unsuspectingly poetic for a drabble piece and suggestive of 'fuck buddies' whose only relationships in life are purely carnal, and lack the ability to see any other layer of depth in acquaintances or form attachments to others)

The only truly unifying theme here is era. Postmodernism' boom was '20s to '60s, specifically '50s. So a lot of references in the context are reflective of the early-mid 1900's(Herbert Hoover, Harry Dean Stanton, the peak popularity of Technicolor, and again, the Dresden bombings circa WWII; also, Vonnegut was influential in postmodernism). I don't quite know what's with all the subtle military/war references though.

Limblifter – Tinfoil Lyrics 14 years ago
Wow, no real comments on such a great Can-rock hit yet? This song is a massive drug reference, or really several. There are also marijuana references("But weeds know just where and when to crop up"). "Corrode me so slow, it boils in tinfoil"...Tinfoil is used to make or injest several drugs, most commonly meth or heroin. It's "cooked" this way, using the foil, spoons, etc..

Bush – A Tendency to Start Fires Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't know, I like bloodshine's analysis, it could be doable, but I get the feeling this is a song about drugs, heroin in particular. A lot of Bush's stuff is about addictions("Swallowed", "Comedown") There's a good amount of references if you read into it. Kitchen tools: spoons are used extensively in using certain illegal drugs. "Live it all at your own cost, so many just got lost" This might be a reference to how many famous people at that time frame (late 90's) O'D on heroin. The fire theme may be a metaphor, or a literal feeling of being on drugs, or even commenting in a pun sort of way on burning bridges, burning relationships, etc. Re-read it with that in mind and see if I'm not the only one who thinks it fits perfectly.

I'm not going to disagree 'Weathered' wasn't some rife shite, but they sold out long before that with 'Human Clay." This whole record, however, is flawless. I recall seeing this perform this acoustic on TRL like the first month 'My Own Prison' came out...Scott was wearing a $5 white t-shirt and JcPenney jeans. Far cry from them six months afterwards!

Superdrag – Destination Ursa Major Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm fairly sure it somehow chronicles John's alcohol problems...maybe the bad decisions you tend to make when under the influence. The space references are probably how drinking makes you feel, like you're somewhere else entirely different.

Plastilina Mosh – Mr. P. Mosh Lyrics 14 years ago
english thanks to google translate:

Go Miss Linda King Pachuco
My car check light, my heart of pretty things
I am the man of the night, I am the shadow of life
My blood is the food that makes you sleepy.

[But I do not just find another exit faces,]
Dancing and singing is your punishment for being a diva,
I am the executioner of your dreams, [I'm bad, I'm not poison]
I look in the eyes because you may not find
Nothing but your reflection!, I'm your hell, I'm your hell.

[In the language of love I was the verb in the flesh,
I was the owner of these dances, but all I end up:]
Mister P. M-O-S-H, Mister P. M-O-S-H,
Mister P. M-O-S-H, Mister P. M-O-S-H.

I must say I do look gorgeous
{How could you not like him?}
I must say I do look gorgeous
{How, how could you not like him?}
I'm, I'm, I must say I do look gorgeous
{How could you not like him?}
I must say I do look gorgeous
... One, two, three, four.

I am the light of this moment, I'm not breathing iron
I look, I find you, do not touch me or I'll burn,
I do not want to be and I want to be with you
But such is my fate, I'm the king of the road
Just look at me go, I emulate fatal
Do not look for me or if his skull is coming.

(We want to know is my love my love,
Whenever we go to parties from afar all you can see is:)
Mister P. M-O-S-H, Mister P. M-O-S-H,
Mister P. M-O-S-H, Mister P. M-O-S-H.

Yeah, talk to me baby,
That's it reigns a little closer ...

Now if all we're going to dance with me!
... Jason my rascal!

Mmm, so ...
Mister P. M-O-S-H, Mister P. M-O-S-H,
Mister P. M-O-S-H, Mister P. M-O-S-H,
Mister P. M-O-S-H, Mister P. M-O-S-H,
Mister P. M-O-S-H, Mister P. M-O-S-H.
Mr. Lopez ... Mister T. .. Mister P. Mosh ... Mister Bean ...

Pete Yorn – For Nancy ('Cos It Already Is) Lyrics 14 years ago
sorry to disappoint all the deep-thinkers, but gube is right. I have heard almost the exact same guitar story. Pete wrote this song out of curiosity of this guitar he bought...he wondered who the previous owner was and what the guitar had been through. So he wrote this song from the guitar's perspective. Makes sense if you read it that way.

Cibo Matto – Birthday Cake Lyrics 14 years ago
I like fishcakes thoughts a lot. Makes a great deal of sense. I always personally saw a parody of American cuisine in this song. How we basically eat anything and everything without realizing how cheaply mass produced it all is, or how unhealthy it is, but with some "extra sugar, extra salt, extra oil, and MSG" it tastes great! Because most people don't even read what's in their food...and even if they do, do we really care for more than a fleeting moment?

^^Everwiser nailed it. That's exactly what I thought this song was about when I was a kid! SO I figured I had a very dirty mind, or it was painfully obvious. The whole bridge about "When I met a lover, she made me dinner..." gives it all away. Lickin finger, indeed.

Eels – Novocaine For The Soul Lyrics 14 years ago
Okay, this song is about two different things. The funny part is, everyone has said one end or the other, but not both. Some people said it's about escapism essentially, finding a cause to make life worthwhile, and that is true. Chocolatesundae thinks its about drugs; that is also correct. Its about using some substance(almost any would fit applicably in context) to get by everyday without feeling like you're 'going through the motions' as E alludes to "This paint-by-numbers life." If you'd ever experienced such a shitty existence, you know how true the lyrics are. When you're coming down a.k.a. "sputtering out" and you're barely functioning, can't cope with any of it, might as well be a vegetable. But as long as you've got your drug of choice, you're fine, life is all of a sudden great, you can do this one more day. When you run out and come down, it's very 'gotta get it somewhere, anywhere, give it to me right fucking now' just to make your day bearable. You DO feel empty, antisocial, apathetic, and hollow. Like the way he describes the feeling is perfect, being "the great undead". He's very cynically addressing how the high gives him an artificial, saccharin happiness in the last verse.

Fig Dish – Pretty Never Hurts Lyrics 14 years ago
I has halp :) For the ones with question marks.

"I was kickin' ass, like a dial tone
The back seat was in shreds, I was all alone
You can be MY hands, in hot pursuit of ghosts
The secret life in PANTS, you get felt up the most

I can never go far 'til I get off, I can never get far

Pretty never hurts if you know what I mean
The BED SPINS killED but they can't catch me
Believe the hype cause I'm so bright and you're my type
Pretty never hurts if you know what I mean

The empty mailbox on the DOWNEST DAYS
All the friends have fled, but the SENTIMENT stays
Will I see you there, when I come up for air
In the Camaro, LET IT be all I know

I can never go far 'til I get off, I can never get far

Pretty never hurts if you know what I mean
The BED SPINS killed but they can't catch me
Believe the hype cause I'm so bright and you're my type
Pretty never hurts if you know what I mean

I was kickin' ass like a dial tone
The other Beatles died, I was all alone

It never gets too far 'til I get off, it never gets too far

Pretty never hurts if you know what I mean
The BED SPINS killed but they can't catch me
Believe the hype cause I'm so bright and you're my type
Pretty never hurts if you know what I mean \

Try those out, hopefully they're right, I'm not picking on you as there are no real lyrics anywhere. As far as the meaning, it's vaguely a sexually suggestive songs. Though I will say it applied to all their songs, none of them really mean a lot lol. The guys really did record When Shove Goes Back to Push in a, ah, less than sober state of mind we'll say. It was in an old ass interview I read once...can't remember what magazine it was, as I have Spin, RS, ChartAttack, Blender, AND Alternative Press. But Blake said himself that if the lyrics seemed "obtuse" at times, that was why. Nonsensicalness or not, its an amazing record.

Age of Electric – Remote Control Lyrics 14 years ago
Like a good chunk of AOE songs, it's drug themed. "Habitual Umbilical" meaning being so dependant on a substance it's akin to a baby constantly feeding on it's umbilical cord. The "remote control" is simply him expressing that he wants to change the channel a.k.a stop doing these things he's obsessed with/find a new or different high. I think the song refers to all habits in general, because the first verse sounds like a lot of sexual metaphors almost.

Age of Electric – I Don't Mind (Bolan's Smiling Down On Me) Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm not terribly sure what the context relates to, but I know the 'Bolan' in question is Mr. Marc Bolan of T Rex fame, one of AOE's big influences. God Lives Underwater – From Your Mouth Lyrics 14 years ago
k7stringsamurai, thanks so much for the story! I remember this being a buzzworthy clip as well in the launching days of MTV2 when it was just M2. Anyway, the interview story helps immensely, before I read your comment, I always figured it was about a girl, it just seemed for likely. What other targets do male songwriters really have? lol So it was nice to hear that for corroboration.
I personally figure it is about a girlfriend that is cheating on him, but won't come clean about it. Denies it when he asks her, but practically everyone else in town knows it except him, and he's left in the dark for what people assume is for his best. But he's pretty certain of what's going on, only adding to the frustration in his girlfriend's dishonesty. The other, slightly dumbed down theory: She acts one way behind his back, with her girlfriends(ie, talks shit about him), but is completely different around him, in a artificial, saccharin sort of way.

Owsley – Oh No The Radio Lyrics 14 years ago
It's a dual statement. On one hand, it's a piece on radio society, and how people can hear the same songs over and over and over 500 times a day and still call up and request it, and how everyone in a relationship has "a song," but it's the same song every other couple picks! Then it's simply a story about recently being dumped by a girlfriend, and "their song" keeps playing wherever he goes, it's all of a sudden ironically inescapable, berating him everywhere while he's still in the mourning period trying to shake her out of his mind.

Letters to Cleo – Pizza Cutter Lyrics 14 years ago
I have a friend that I swear this song is autobiographical for him! It's about knowing someone for a long time and repeatedly trying to help them better themselves, but it ain't happening. Someone with a complete lack of motivation or drive, and a surplus of bad habits("And what you got in the bag?" Alcohol/drugs), possibly a violent streak("Why didn't you just stay home?" A lot of people ask themselves that same question when they get into trouble in public). Then she finally just gives up on trying to work with this person("no, I won't go back and bail you out"), and focus on herself again. Why Pizza Cutter, I have no clue!

moist – Dogs Lyrics 14 years ago
^Both of you guys are most likely fully or partially correct, but I would consider another avenue as well. When this album was released, Moist was REALLY famous in their Canadian stomping grounds. Like so many others that achieved commercial success(Bryan Adams, Alanis Morissette, Our Lady Peace, Shania Twain, etc), they were expected to move to LA, as that's what all famous distinguished rich people do. And they were conflicted about that supposed inevitability. Similar theme can also be found in Frank Black's "Los Angeles," Alice in Chains "Check My Brain," and Butch Walker's "Uncomfortably Numb."

It's definitely about drug addictions, and it's more a feeling of frustration than sympathy or sadness. He is so mad this person was very close to him, and on death's door, angry his problem will steal him away. People like that are hard to help...unfortunately, as in this song, they make their own solutions and are usually the worst kind.

Dishwalla – Haze Lyrics 17 years ago
basically, it's a poor girl with a lot of issues...she drinks, she's depressed, people love her but she still feels inferior due to a lack of self-esteem. She wants so badly to kill herself, whether it be 'accidentally' or otherwise, but when it comes down to it, she doesn't really have the courage or motivation to do it, she knows she would regret it. She's hoping in vain someone is there to help and understand her situation, but she won't tell anyone, so...?. I have a theory it's a 'lady of the night' as the song even itself has that kinda "bom chicka wah wah" porno beat to it.
