theres an interview with Nick Thorburn that explains the intro to this song. Nick was driving late at night and he was listening to the radio and some guy called (which is what the intro is) and he was sorta creeped out by this but he thought it was funny so he put it in the song. heres what Nick said: ND: "Volcanoes" sends a pretty straight narrative, or at least like a background. The inspiration comes from the first 10 seconds, that little voice that comes on. It was on a radio call-in show, "Coast to Coast." So this guy called in and said he was this demon, in this voice, and I thought it was hilarious and insane, but it also gave me the chills because it was at night and I was by myself when I heard it. The overarching theme of that song is pretty straight up: A natural disaster is gonna wipe us out. God that song sounds so boring now. That's my other fear-- making it boring.
