this song is basically about the current state of youth culture being driven by the corporate media, and the anger our generation feels towards the last for exploiting us. as matt caughtran (the vocalist) says, this song is about realizing what you were promised when you were young was all bullshit. these days, kids buy into trends thinking it will give them an identity while in fact it strips them of one. ("slit wrists are the latest fashion"). it is corporate sponsored rebellion. however as a counterpoint to this, the song recognizes the kids who really are troubled youth and disillusioned with the media. this is what is meant by the line "your sheets see the dirtiest action, we're independent mammas, broke kids and loveless gutters". it's this contrast that makes the song what it is. it shows the gap between what the media shows as youth culture, and the reality of the situation. it's about not accepting the image that the media is trying to shove down your throat every day. don't be what they want you to be. don't buy into their lies. you won't be famous or pretty. here comes YOUR shitty future. |
