David Bowie – Quicksand Lyrics 15 years ago
I gotta say, my favorite lines from this song are "Don't believe in yourself. Don't deceive with belief. Knowledge comes with deaths release." and "I'm sinking in the quicksand of my thoughts. And I ain't got the power anymore."

The first one sounds so bleak and morbid at first, but I don't really take it as that. I take it more as, well, fact. Just inescapable fact that everyone should realize. It's only depressing if you let it be. And those three lines seem to follow in a logical path of thought. Don't believe in yourself. Not because you should think you are worthless, but because belief is a very deceptive thing. And knowledge is far better.

And I can relate way too well to the second. Sometimes I get so deep in philosophical thought that it feels like I'm sinking into, well, a pit of quicksand. And really, as intriguing and addicting as deep thinking is, it gets you nowhere. All it can do is leave you feeling insignificant.

MGMT – Time to Pretend Lyrics 15 years ago
sorry to burst all your teen bubbles, but this has NOTHING to do with high school. its AFTER high school, cause that's when the real fun starts.
you think making money, finding wifes, moving to paris, shooting heroin are all parts of the "high school experience"? fuck no! i know high school seems so important while your in it, but once you get out, you realize how stupid, fickle, and wasteful it was. hearing kids act like high school is the most important time in their lives makes me sick, honestly. you have no freedoms, you have no choices, you have no rights. you also have no experiences, no real knowledge....just trust me. high school is prison.

once you move out, you gain true freedom: freedom of action, freedom of choice, and, with the right substances, freedom of mind. that's basically what the first and second stanzas are talking about. moving to paris, shooting with herion, and fucking with stars just because you fucking can. i wouldn't recommend france or heroin, but its your choice. the second stanza really stands out to me. i can 100% relate with it. my first and so far only year of college could be described in that. and its VERY overwhelming. unimaginably. and the last line is pure sarcasm, saying it like "what, do this? yeah fuckin right!"

the third stanza is after living this lifestyle for a while, possibly a few months, maybe a few weeks. its different for each person. but EVERYbody goes through it. its kind of when reality sets in, like how in the third line it says "freedom" refering to the freedom from responsibility we all had as kids. responsibility can be a drag.

the rest of the song brings reality back into the picture. a lifestyle like this one, like the one i lived for a year in college, as fun, as mind bending, as reality warping as it is, cant last. the truth is, gravity always wins. in the long run, it has a toll on you. it will leave your body weak and feeble, your mind losing grip of whats real....its really a scary thought. i just had a very small taste of this.

excuse my ranting, but this song has a lot of meaning for me. i really can't listen to it without getting this intense stew of the emotions that i went through, none of which are explainable or the usual. that's one thing you will find. there are faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar more emotions then happiness, sorrow, anger, and love. there are an infinite amount. they're all chemicals, after all ;)

so point of the song, for me at least: live the life, do what you want, be free....but understand there will be repercussion for your actions. things you couldn't even imagine.

Ten Years After – I'd Love to Change the World Lyrics 15 years ago
i don't know how people are saying this is mocking either right or left wing....i think its mocking both.

the first 2 lines sound entirely like how republicans see the world and what they think is wrong with it, and the 2nd 2 lines are the same for the democrats.

and i think the chorus is just generational as said earlier where it's one generation leaving it up to the next.

Foo Fighters – Wheels Lyrics 16 years ago
the main meaning of the song to me is relief. think about flying a plane for the first time and having to land. when the wheels come down, the relief you'd feel must be enormous! but at the same time, you still have to slow down to a stop ("and you feel like its all over/heres another round for you").

it could also be talking about settling down from the rock star lifestyle. maybe this is the foos last? i hope not. dave is amazing!

Uh....i think the last line of the chorus is "But if the offer's shunned you might as well be walkin' on the sun".
"is shun" doesn't make any sense...

Green Day – Longview Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't see how obvious this has to be, but this song is about getting high. Yes, if you want it to, you can omit parts and make it just about sitting around being bored, but there are a few key lines.

"Take me away to paradise" and "I'm slipping away to paradise" are two obvious ones. I mean, when you're bored, you're not in paradise, but when you're high, you are.

"I got no motivation/Where is my motivation?/No time for motivation/Smoking my inspiration". Easily the most telling part of the song. When you're high, you have NO motivation. Also, he's smoking the inspiration for his songs. I take it literally.

"Sit around and watch the phone, but no one's calling". He is just kinda staring at the phone and slipping off mentally into space. He doesn't expect any calls, but he just happens to be looking at the phone.

"Some say, "Quit or I'll go blind"/but it's just a myth". Just another myth about smoking. People try to scare him into quitting with that, but he knows its bullshit.

So there. I'm not saying you have to accept this as the meaning, I'm just saying I believe that is the INTENDED meaning. It can really work either way.

John Mayer – Bigger Than My Body Lyrics 16 years ago
In an interview I once saw of John Mayer, he said that while he was in high school, he felt so kept down and stuck. He saw high school as a giant roadblock on his way to becoming what he is today. He said he knew how to become big and he would do what he needed to, but he couldn't until he graduated (which is much like how I feel). He also said he lived not by week to week, not by day to day, but by minute to minute.

I think this song has a double meaning. One is just him conveying how he felt in high school, which is the more obvious one.
Another meaning is about how people can be more then they seem.

Point is, I love this song! lol

Led Zeppelin – Going to California Lyrics 17 years ago
To me, this song is about the promise of a new life and Plant's journey for it.

The first verse is about how he was in a bad relationship and decided to end it and start a new life somewhere else. The girl with "love in her eyes and flowers in her hair" could be taken literally as a beautiful girl he wants to meet or just as the promise of a new life.

The second verse is about how he took the chance of going to a new place and starting over and almost started to regret it (the sea was red and the sky was grey. wondered how tomorrow could ever follow today). Then, he thought more and realized it was gonna be alright (children of the sun began to awake).

The bridge is kinda summarizing the last 2 verses. Hes saying it seems like somehow he pissed off "God" or "Fate" and so that's why his life started to sink. Then he talks like the new life hes going for is like a person that can save him (Throw me a line. If I reach it in time I'll meet you out there where the path runs straight and high)(this could be taken religiously, but im not religious).

In the third verse, he's making the thing hes aiming for seem more literally like a girl (which i prefer to think it as. im a romantic :P). The "Ride a white mare on the footsteps of dawn" is saying hes close to the better life hes been wanting. "Trying to find a woman who's never never never been born" is saying that it seems too good to be true. The last two lines are saying he made it and hes happier. He's "standing on a hill on a mountain of dreams". He ends it by saying "well, that wasn't so hard", possibly as a lesson to go for what you feel in your heart is what you should be doing or where you should be.

Its an inspirational and motivating song! And beautiful too!

John Mayer – Gravity Lyrics 17 years ago
To me, this song is about a guy who just can't do anything right.

"Gravity is working against me
and gravity wants to bring me down"
Gravity, as a force, pushes down on us and hinders us from doing things (ie flying). I think this is a metaphor saying that it always seems like there is an invisible force that keeps putting him down. Something that makes everything always go wrong. He can't stop it, but he can learn to work around it.

"Ill never know what makes this man
with all the love that his heart can stand.
Dream of ways to throw it all away"
This seems like hes wondering why he wants someone to love so desperately, but he can't, so the second best option is to want to get rid of the love because its almost become a burden.

"Twice as much ain't twice as good
and can't sustain like one half could.
Its wanting more that's gonna send me to my knees."
This seems like hes saying having more love isn't necessarily better if you can't use it and it's a lot easier to deal with less. And this need for an outlet for his love is gonna tear him apart.

"Just keep me where the light is"
I interpret this as he hopes that no matter what, he can stay happy and his love doesn't break him down and throw him into the blues.

Basically, the song is saying love is a blessing and, for some people, a curse.

Blink-182 – I Miss You Lyrics 17 years ago
i like most of the ideas u guys r coming up with. the jack and sally sounds obvious (now that u mentioned it lol) because of the "halloween on christmas".

what ive thought about is the "darkness in the valley". think about it. a valley is a low point in a landscape, so maybe its refering to a low point in one of their lives, or their relationship. now, DARKNESS in a valley i think is an extremely depressing/hard time.
from this i can draw 2 conclusions. either their relationship has just gone bad, or the girl committed suicide due to something catastrophic happening in her life, like a dead relative.

another part i thought of is slightly less open. the "webs from all the spiders" part.
"and as i stare i counted webs from all the spiders" i think this means its been a long long time and he still hasent gotten over it. so long, in fact, that spider or cob webs hav started to form, which he, literally or not, counts to pass the time.

"catching things and eating their insides". the only meaning i can come up with for this is that he relizes death is a natural, inevitable thing.

or, more horribly, maybe she was killed at night in a valley by an animal and eaten......

im not 100% sure on any of these. just throwin up ideas to see what u guys can make of them :D

this song can be about god if u want it to, but it isnt to me. thats the beauty of music. the meaning is what you make it.

yes there always is an INTENDED meaning, but that doesnt matter. thats just the artist's version.

this is a confusing song
it has its big picture parts and its small picture parts. by that i mean at some times it can be understood as about war or politics but at some points it sounds like a bad relationship.

either way, ill hav to listen to it abit more to completely figure out what it means to me
