Tori Amos – You Can Bring Your Dog Lyrics 9 years ago
The "you can bring your mom" line always throws me - it could be a throw-away comment, or, a completely out on a limb suggestion, "son of a bitch" - ie. female dog being some kind of link?!

Queensrÿche – London Lyrics 13 years ago
I agree with AdrianDangerous, except the words are not those of Jack the Ripper himself. The last victim, Mary Jane Kelly, was murdered on 9th November [1888] and the song mentions the last time being the 4th.
Bearing all that in mind, this is my interpretation [in a historical fiction sense]:
a man had a relationship with Kelly, possibly in spite of her being a prostitute, and he is remembering the last time he saw her before her murder; "the blood red streaks on velvet throats" may be a reference to the fact a lot of Ripper victims had their throats slit. The man is also mourning Kelly - her death was by far the worst of the Ripper murders, as she was practically unidentifiable after the discovery of her body. I believe "I wish I could just remember your name", is a reflection of the 'putting a name to a face' thing; metaphorically speaking of course, after her death she had no face to put a name to.
But a part of this man wishes it had been him instead - "you know I don't want to live forever" and of course, "the worst [thing] is being alone" and now he is.
As for "the streetlights fanned our trail of fame through London", I can only assume that the streetlights that lead the way through the night did not help the police identify Jack the Ripper, who gained fame through these events.

Anathema – Dreaming Light Lyrics 14 years ago
Allfadir could well have the true meaning of this song in the bag as the "northern horizon" and "dreaming light" sounds a lot like the Aurora Borealis/Northern Lights. Sure enough Daniel Cavanagh now lives in Norway.

However my interpretation is about a newborn and the effect it has on the new father.

"Suddenly, life has new meaning" - the man must take on a new role in his life; new meaning being the arrival of his newborn and the start of the family he now has with his partner.
"Suddenly, feeling is being" - everything he feels for the child he must portray [show his love] and not conceal/hide.

~
"And you shine inside, and love - stills my mind like the sunrise" - the baby makes the father smile inside and out. The baby is a constant reminder of what the man [and his partner] created. He is so taken with his newborn, he feels he could just gaze and smile at [it] them forever.
~

"Suddenly... I don't have to be afraid/ it all falls into place" - everything that worried him is no longer an issue, his duty comes to him as instinct, second nature.

~
"Dreaming light" - perhaps he feels like the baby has saved his life; before he was in darkness but now he's seen the light and knows what he has to do. The dreaming aspect could well draw on the nerves he felt in the time leading up to the birth.
~

"I feel you but don't really know you" - he can love, care for and *hold* the baby, but knows nothing of what the baby is feeling [obvious, but it's being spelled out to the father for what seems like the first time - it's all new].

"I dreamed of you from the moment I saw you" - similar to the nerves he had before the baby was born, the father now has a foundation for his slumber; it was just a dream before, now it's reality and he has his own child to dream about.

"I've seen the sunrise in your eyes,
The sky, the sea, the light" - the father can see the future and/or equivalent of natural beauty in his child's eyes, and can ultimately compare it to these views.

~
"Live your dream beneath the northern horizon" - [beneath the northern horizon is technically the same as living below the sun in the sky] I see the father cradling the baby before bedtime, talking to it in the context of growing up and having dreams about the future.

"Be at peace, set your heart in flight again" - now the baby must go to sleep, but it can still dream.

"For the light is truth, the light is you... " - again reinforcing how the child has re-ignited the fire in the father's life. His paternal duty must be fulfilled and now he feels the strength to do it; give his child the best upbringing and care he can [along with his partner of course!]

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Whether this is wrong or no-one agrees, I will sing this beautiful song as a lullaby to my future child :)
Britney Spears – Hold It Against Me Lyrics 14 years ago
One thing puzzles me about the title line in the chorus. Does she mean "would you hold it against me" as in:
- the guy thinking less of her if they had a one night stand
or
- the guy literally holding his body against hers...?
I'm guessing the former, but still clarification would be great!
Tori Amos – 500 Miles Lyrics 15 years ago
I wondered if it had some kind of biblical reference what with the bread and the long-distance walking =P
That said, what is the significance of her ongoing repetition of "break"?
Jet – Timothy Lyrics 16 years ago
I reckon the spaceship is a reference to a game that Timothy used to play or maybe a toy that got lost and found.
This is one of my favourite Jet songs - a haunting musical constructing supporting such emotional lyrics... Plus the fact it was written by someone who wasn't even related to Timothy! I'm sure Cameron was quite touched.
Anathema – Are You There? Lyrics 16 years ago
First of all, what an emotionally atmospheric song this is. My eyes well up every time.
My interpretation sways towards someone/the singer uttering a careless whisper towards their best friend, female most likely [excuse the George Michael reference!] Please forgive how disjointed my elaboration is!
First off, "My mind is happy" = the dream the singer has of himself and his friend.
"Need to learn to let it go" = in order for the dream to take wing, the singer has to calm down, act casual and take it easy.
"I know you'd do no harm to me" lays foundations in the singer's mind when he's thinking about his friend in a different light. Following on, the musical break [ie. introduction of rhythm section] symbolises the singer making his move and the girl's initial reaction of shock and continuing negativity.
The entire second verse reflects the singer's regret over making such a foolish mistake; wanting a more intimate relationship by taking advantage of a close friendship:
"Tried and failed as we walked by the riverside" = the aftermath of their encounter, the awkwardness of the situation.
"Oh, I wish you could see the love in her eyes" = the singer remembering how he relayed his dream to the girl.
"The best friend that eluded you lost in time, burned alive in the heat of a grieving mind" = the singer putting himself in the girl's shoes, perhaps labelling himself as the 'best friend'; after her ultimate answer of "no", he feels dead inside and out [metaphorically].
In the third verse, "Oh, what can I say now?
And it couldn't be more wrong 'cause there's no one there" = ie. she's not there.
"You lost all the love that we could've shared" = the singer trying to turn around the situation in his mind, possibly trying to place blame on the girl but upon realising "it's wearing me down, and it's turning me round", it's still his fault and there's no-one to blame but himself.
"And I can't find a way now to find it out" = the singer can't even talk to his closest friend any more because of his actions.
"Oh, where are you when I need you?" = Clearly the singer wishes he hadn't taken such drastic actions in order to make himself happy, presuming his friend wanted the same thing. However he now realises that he still needs his best friend but she might not act the same way around him [now that she knows how he feels about her].
Finally the continuous "Are you there?" at the end is obviously the question the singer is relaying to his friend - either conveying his regret or his naivety in the sense of "why dwell on the past, let's carry on as usual" [the latter has happened to me, so that's my proof that it's possible!]
The repetition of the question and no answer suggests that the friend hasn't forgiven him or doesn't really know what to do or say.
That's my alternative interpretation - just throwing it out there!
Sonata Arctica – Letter To Dana Lyrics 16 years ago
I think there is metaphorical irony on the topic of weather - perhaps previous relationships between Dana and her parents are reflected in the weather [personification].
Also the musical form ABA may contribute in terms of who "passed away" and the weather conditions:
A - Father, beautiful day
B - Mother, really rainy day
A - Dana, beautiful day
Just an observation!
Rilo Kiley – The Moneymaker Lyrics 17 years ago
Is the "Diamonds" line a reference to Marilyn Monroe or costume jewellery of adult entertainers? I agree about it being a great song for getting ready too; it's so sexy and groovy! I'm watching the video for the first time on youtube atm and think it's VERY sexy :) lol
I'm pretty sure the line is "brightened pier". They are American after all. Being a Brit, I'd love it to be Brighton but hey. As for Zunk, if you want respect, have a little dignity and respect other people's opinions.
Led Zeppelin – Tangerine Lyrics 17 years ago
"I was her love, she was my queen,
And now a thousand years in between."
Just goes to show the difference in love ex-/partners feel for eachother. The context of this song reminds me of "Roosterspur Bridge" by Tori Amos. Both songs are not angry or aggressive - they gather old memories and reminisce fondly. Human nature. I heart this song :)
I understand the interpretation about a man leaving his woman and not wanting to, but my question is "why does he feel he has to leave her?" Sure, he was a rambler but WHY does he have to go back to his old ways/his home? Thoughts?
Tori Amos – Girl Disappearing Lyrics 17 years ago
Tbh I thought the girl disappearing was one literally fading from view - similar to PARASOL: that woman is "safe in [her] frame" and "safe" from reality. I picture the girl disappearing to be a teenager who didn't quite fit in at school or something along those lines, leading to depression and isolation. Also this is a song of Clyde's [aka Clitorides in the album notes], as the latter name determines in SMOKEY JOE: Pip sings "he killed my sister, Clitorides", which may be another reference to Clyde or Girl Disappearing. Plus Clyde is one song short of her sisters on ADP, hence another sign of her "passing". This is probably a long shot what with the anorexia claim, but it's my interpretation.
When I first heard this song, I didn't like it much but as it now intrigues me, I've grown to like it and, I'm open to all interpretations.
Tori Amos – I Can't See New York Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree with mtmoore's interpretation, although SongPrincess127's interpretation is fascinating too! Also what j3ebrules said about simulation of the plane crash ("is there a signal there?... on the other side"). Very artistic. Upon reading that Tori wrote the maj or this song before 9/11, it is fascinating to think about the different perspectives of this song.
I do occasionally wonder about whose "lips are warm", and the "Hunting ground" bit... I wonder if that was in reference to political battles in Afghanistan/the Middle East?
It's defo one of my favourite songs from Scarlet's Walk; I love playing and singing it. The recording is so atmospheric and haunting. Unforgettable.
I agree with j3ebrules to be honest. Plus "swirl" could be mistaken for "swell", ie. cunnilingus talk.
