First, I've always thought the lyrics to be:
"everybody wants a piece of some easy enterprise
can this world cut your face and carry the news that you've gotta give to be given?

To me, this song is about the mixed emotions of living and earning a living. We want that plush life where we can live easy and not have to work and struggle and fight for what we get. But it's also good to have something to work for. Some passion that keeps you feeling like you're doing something with your life not just wasting away. We don't want to work our whole lives away becoming sad and empty, but we also don't want to waste our potential. |

Ok to clear things up, "taction" is indeed a word. It is a noun, and coincidentally, it means the act of touching or contact. So since most people on here seem to think he's actually saying "touching" then I guess it doesn't really matter because they are synonymous. That being said, I still hear "taction", not "touching". |

Wow there should be more comments on here, this song is amazing.
I definitely agree with the idea that this song is about growing up and going from the carefree days oh childhood to actually having to deal with reality. The beginning with "just killing time and making noise" refers to just being a kid really but then someone goes and says that kid stuff is pointless and telling you to grow up as it says "don't dream". And then it goes into being a teenager with the "cold radio and license plates". And then it talks about how growing up sucks and there's always something more you wish you could do or wish you would have done. "Behind every desire there's another one waiting to be liberated when the first one's sated" you start to feel like nothing really gets done although you try and try its just a futile cycle. I'm not completely sure what the "white and black hats" is about. Maybe...mood swings? Idk you get old and these things happen.
Well that's what I got from it. I might be wrong, but either way it's a great song. Definitely one of my favorites |

I prefer the litteral meaning of this song. He is just sitting and observing the flies as they fly around. It is easy to put a metaphor on it and I think that was the point. It's really just something that happened, but it could be meaningful metaphorically and so that's why it is now a song. It's just left up to the listener to put whatever twist they want on it. I just would rather leave it in it's simplicity as song of observation and wonder. |

I really do'nt understand why eveyone likes this song so much. I mean I love Death Cab, but this song is...well it doesn't sound anything like their older stuff, first of all. But man, this is way far off from "romantic" it's more like uber creepy. Now that I have the full album, I have to say there are better songs on there and this song was certainly a bad advertising song. It made me almost not want to get the whole album. I'm just glad the rest of the songs aren't as much of a disappointment as this one. |
