Weightless Lyrics
Outside, just killing time and making noise
Outside, the daylight comes, the daylight goes
Weightless affairs that weigh less than air weighs
Make no stairways, just stairs, goes nowhere
Don’t dream that it’s a dream it is what it seems
That it’s a dream it is what it seems
Climbing from over-stimulated states
To hearing cold radio and license plates
But don’t dream that it’s a dream it is what it seems
That it’s a dream it is what is seems
Behind every desire is another one
Waiting to be liberated when the first one’s sated
Waterskiing, the water’s soft, the water’s hard
You act nice, a black birthday card, I threw it away
Grown-up life is like eating speed or flying a plane
It’s too bright, it’s too bright
White and black hats
Hide behind each other’s backs
All the time
Behind every desire is another one
Waiting to be liberated when the first one’s sated
Outside, the daylight comes, the daylight goes
Weightless affairs that weigh less than air weighs
Make no stairways, just stairs, goes nowhere
Don’t dream that it’s a dream it is what it seems
That it’s a dream it is what it seems
To hearing cold radio and license plates
But don’t dream that it’s a dream it is what it seems
That it’s a dream it is what is seems
Waiting to be liberated when the first one’s sated
You act nice, a black birthday card, I threw it away
Grown-up life is like eating speed or flying a plane
It’s too bright, it’s too bright
Hide behind each other’s backs
All the time
Waiting to be liberated when the first one’s sated

I LOVE this song. I love it when bands/artists can write a song that isn't entirely in 4/4 time. This one is primarily in 3/4. It makes it even better. For realz.
Wow there should be more comments on here, this song is amazing.
I definitely agree with the idea that this song is about growing up and going from the carefree days oh childhood to actually having to deal with reality. The beginning with "just killing time and making noise" refers to just being a kid really but then someone goes and says that kid stuff is pointless and telling you to grow up as it says "don't dream". And then it goes into being a teenager with the "cold radio and license plates". And then it talks about how growing up sucks and there's always something more you wish you could do or wish you would have done. "Behind every desire there's another one waiting to be liberated when the first one's sated" you start to feel like nothing really gets done although you try and try its just a futile cycle. I'm not completely sure what the "white and black hats" is about. Maybe...mood swings? Idk you get old and these things happen.
Well that's what I got from it. I might be wrong, but either way it's a great song. Definitely one of my favorites
Wow. Can't believe there aren't more comments. Great freaking song. And the 3 feel definitely makes the song..

well he's obviously talking about how as we start to grow up we all start moving too fast. its so true, and anyone can relate. i love this song!
I can't believe there isn't more about this song- I struggled with what this song was trying to say. I think to me, it's about growing up and realizing you're always waiting for the next thing. Being grown up is no fun. Days come and go and we're always waiting on something.
meaning to me? its all about getting older, brilliant song and meanings but what the hell are the white and black hats?????????? really want to know what this means, is it an american thing or something? apert from that bit it all makes sense to me.
It's actually "Why do black cats hide behind each others back's all the time."

I just checked a very clean live performance, and there is little doubt in my mind that he says "White and black hats"

It's a secret to everyone, I guess.

White hats and black hats are in reference to the good guys and bad guys in old cowboy films and serials.

I couldn't say what it means in the context of this song. Something about duality? Perspectives? He sings it beautifully, and that's enough for me.

Have you ever eaten "space cakes"? That's what this song's about.
Obvious drug usage reference. Obviously "weightless" means light headedness that one feels when the shrooms kick in about 45 minutes after eatin' them.
The rest of the lyrics are typical "streams of conscience" rhetoric that's intended to be obscure simply because when you write song lyrics under an influence of a substance, the meaning's gonna be rather uncertain.
Amazing song.
You guys are all wrong, no offense. Read it again. This song, along with all of his other songs are about life, and his views on the one and only truth in life.
Don't believe me? Look up all of linkin parks lyrics, 30 seconds to mars, sting, the list goes on guys.
