This song hit home, when a friend passed away this year. Unexpected deaths especially in young people are really difficult. I felt as if my friend was the one singing these lyrics right before her passing. And on the "voices calling" are prayers from loved ones. All we wanted was just one last time with her. Even if she has to come downstairs from heaven and say hello.It's like a message from above letting us know that everything is fine. Lastly, my second interpretation was the person in the song lives in the basement of his house. He doesn't go out much therefore has time to watch WOO with the DSM album and, wants to change soon, not yet but soon. Seems like his family kinda leave em down there too. So he says don't be shy he's not a monster. Just say hello. |

To me the song is describing a situation in which a teenager is thrown in to an adult world to take care and manage everything. Though this young person thinks he or she can manage everything the reality is he or she is only a child and shouldn't have to carry a grown persons burden. It could really be parents who are irresponsible and this child is asuming all of tDon't strain your head, child, thinking for them. Don't place the blame, child. Your time will come. he responsibilty. The young person is taking the blame for the parents actions AND denying the fact that THEY are the ones who are wrong. "You'll bruise their hearts, child. You'll live their lives You'll fill their shoes, child You'll still be right You'll speak your words, child. You're still naïve." This line specifically speaks to the fact that the child is working as the adukt instead a being a kid. "Don't strain your head, child, thinking for them. Don't place the blame, child. Your time will come." This child hasnt been able to just be a kid. "All you've lived is moments in a fraction of their lives. It's sad you never notice when the stick is in your eye" The adult life is so much longer than that of the childs that the moments the child has lived have only been fractions of time in the adults life. Hey this is only my guess as to what this song could mean... |

| On K-rock 92.3 in NY, the DJ said that Incubus said that the song was not about Bush.. but i think they were just saying so because after all this time everyoone's been saying so and maybe they just didn't want people saying Incubus was anti-Bush or something. I still think it's a great song. a little played out. I guess the 'song' isn't about the pres. but maybe the 'video' is. btw. thank god songmeanings is back. | |

My interpretation: I dont know what religion, if any, the member's of Finch follow, but i have taken a religious point of view on this song. When through life unblessed we rove, losing all that has made life dear, you tend to feel down in other words, She lived without spiritual guidance. and she was empty. This girl has reached rock bottom. She gave all her time and energy into this one thing, be it a relationship or what have you. Last resort people commonly turn to a higher power. You pray on your knees, thats what i think she does. Then in prayer, shes claims shes doesnt want to feel useless anymore, she begs for another opportunity. Longging for sleep again is one of two things, either literally sleep, because you often pray at night or, she wants long awaited rest from what she has just devoted all of her time to. All this time she hadnt slept. it was more like a daze.. day in and day out.. the same monochrome life. The air is clearing part comes after the breathing and the turning point of the song. this is where ' God' comes into to play, He now is responding, water turns to wine, in other words a miracle has happend. The day is tired, the night's inside her= the past is over, and what just happend has taken over her spirit. Now she is alive. For all the time she lived without him in her life she was just a body, now she has a spirit. Her prayer comes back into the picture. But now shes claiming God for what he is. accepting a new path for her life.She alert and receptive to everything that will occur later on. She prays to Him to keep her with Him forever. to break the silence she lived. No longer just regular breaths but now breaths of life. As I said, it's MY point of view..you guys might all try to find all the possible reasons YOU dont think its true.. but if its that way so be it. thanks for reading anyway. |

...this song is excellent few have done interpretations on this song..everyone loves it and feels it relates..but relate to what.. in my opinion it means a lot of thing..but obsessed with the song i heard it a lot...the ending 'noises' to me described the previous lyrics but in a different form..listen to those noises carefully..you will soon discover how significant it is to the whole feeling the song gives. the noise is a bunch of up's and down's, it works with your emotions, crescendo's and decrescendo's create a sick effect. i thought that the song was about someone that he truly loved had fallen into in a coma. or some kind of permanent state .immobilized. before the sick person came to be that way the relationship was headed downhill..now that this problem has come over he has returned to say his last words before the end. i feel that he loved her more thatn she loved him. she's asleep again the way she's always been to him..more or less unresponsive. the truth is: he can't help her. and hearing the rain and stuff is just reminiscent of old memories trying to overcome the amnesia and remind this person about the past. now that it's over he can finally tell her that together they are whole and she will be with him forever(spiritually) then the noises come in..it sounds like it's in someone who is in a state of shock or coma's head. it sounds like what they would hypothetically hear. the noises sound like a disease. the begining of the noise to me sounds like the persons life...it's still the song but soon turns the the diseaseor accident, it where the sound changes to an eerier sound,those loud noises that sound like something is approching are people moving around in the room, listenening on.. you hear voices..as if she heard the last few words,then the sharp scream like noises are pain, the last singing part are when the persons dies; sorta like the funeral service.the clock-like sound is time running out, and lastly the marching/clock sound is the burial/ending of a life and begging or continuation of another...now that i write all of this out and read other views i dont feel my view is correct...but it's only an opinion.(s0rry its sooo long) |

| punkrockchick217 very true....yea they do refer to the actual devil...most of their songs are christian based..but words are changed for the sake of the general public...if you search the internet..you may find two versions of this song and many other chevelle songs..you will clearly see the orignal lyrics are very religious and then the modified version seem more applicable to everyday life. | |

....i'm dying to know someones view on this song...it has to be one of my fave Greenwheel songs....i had some friend trouble recently..and this song described my situation. I felt restrained and also outcast by my best friend.our relationship changed for the worst in a matter of months. She was the one saying i was the one who had messed it up from the start. but all i ever wanted was to be friends and be like her(indifference) and by now i have learned my lesson and want to leave..get away from the pain but she's holding on to me. cuz she also needs me but we just cant be together. we have an identity together...but we WANT separate identities but this isnt the greatest song meaning...someone else please share your views on 'identity' |

| w/o criticizing me....my thoughts are #1 this song is awesome. i play it over and over. also, this situation has never occured in my relationships past but it did very recently happen to my best friend. it describes exactly what was happening between them. The guy was about to move away to Fla. he was depressed and upset etc. ( i was the one who was lifting you when you thought your life had had enough) he told her he loved her but often contradicted his own words leaving her in a constant despair trying to hold on to him. They never truly "dated" because he kept running from her everytime they were on the brink of being together he'd keep staying away. it's seemed like he was scared or something. She would do ANYTHING for him and he kept acting like she meant nothing. She had no words for him to make him change his mind and show his true feelings. So in the end all she wanted was for him to finally make his decision whether he was going to stay or go. so she wanted the truth because she was worrying it was all a waste of time..so continuing that was why she was asking him why he was running away.. why keeping the distance... the song totally represented what they were going through (and still are, cuz' they are still in the same run around) | |
