i think this is about the boy growing up in the dime. i think the first person is another whore in the dime telling about the boy. ms. terri returns to the dime because she was unable to escape the city. she also needs to support her baby. as the boy grows, he learns to defend ms. terri from men trying to kill her. "The object of affection, conflicted by convictions of indecency, sorority, corrupted by impropriety" all the woman in the dime love the boy hence "object of affection and conflicted by convictions of...sorority" but he's also corrupted by all that he sees in the dime. "The cavalier, she holds of him, in dissonance with experience, a boy who grows, with knife in hand, to fend for her, becomes a man." ms. terri expects her son to protect her always, calling him a "cavalier", even though this very statement disagrees with the fact that the boy has no experience with fending people off. but he learns with time, and becomes a man. "But she plays fake affection, and carefully lacks subjection, to a gentleman" she pretends to love a man when he comes in and pays for her, when obviously she doesn't. "We dance around the truth, my dear I lie for you, but when I lie down, I’m simply lying to them too." this is the first person view, of another woman in the dime, telling a man she will lie to him and tell him she loves him, when she lies in bed for him, she is lying. quite inventive thinking on casey's part. |

"With a fondness for cooking history, revealing thoughts of Ms Terri." always thought he was saying "mystery" and maybe casey named her this for a reason? "In the heat of the night, a woman wealthy of a parous plight erased a harlots life." ms. terri has given birth before, "parous" meaning given birth twice or more and "plight" being a unfortunate situation, so i believe this is not the first time she has been pregnant. she is running away from the city to have this child and raise it, and she's trying to "erase" her life as a prostitute. but i think the pimp/priest has set out his people to try and stop her from escaping, and they beat her and throw her in the river. or she can't get across the river and she is stuck there and they are coming after her still. "Oh, but her breath escapes her. Oh, but the pulse remains." she stops breathing but she is still alive. |

i want to think it's a train because i always thought "express" was something to do with trains. and also, on the dear hunter website, there is a section called "the station" or something along those lines. yet in the lyrics it says "Big steam ships, exits illustrate the flaw" so then again, maybe it's a ship? "Don't be ashamed of your amore faux pas" should be "amour" i believe. "faux pas" as a phrase in french means "false step" so his false step in love? this must be talking of the future, of ms. leading, unless anyone else has any other ideas? |

I think a lot of you are wrong. I think that there is someone reading these letter because they found them on the beach. i think the young man [dear hunter?] who was in love with ms. leading left her because she cheated/is a whore in a brothel and now he has found another woman "Oh how she smiles from vicarious love from the one he writes about" ms. leading is happy that he has found another woman, he has explained it to her in the letter, and she is just happy that he is in love again. but when it says "she must have been so glad for him to throw it out" i think that the young man left this other woman because he still loves ms. leading. and that's the second letter, he tells her he still loves her but they can't be together in which "she must have been so sad for him to throw her out" comes in to play. or maybe he is talking about the other woman. and ms. leading just happens to be better off without the young man, because she can't take hurting him because of her profession. |
