| Ricky Nelson – Garden Party Lyrics | 3 years ago |

@[stonesroller:44389] This has always bothered me also. I might finally understand though. He went to the concert to play the old songs, but the crowd wasn't buying it because he "didn't look the same." It didn't feel the same. So he played some new stuff and they didn't like that either. So at the end he's saying good-bye to the old songs. Tried playing them and it didn't work, so moving on. Maybe? |

| Morphine – Gone for Good Lyrics | 9 years ago |
| Even though it's been 19 years and I in no manner feel this way any more, every time I hear this song, it briefly invokes the feelings I had after being dumped all those years ago. (empathy with the me of 19-years ago, I suppose) The lyrics and execution of the song are just perfect. The melancholy of knowing you have to move on, and just trying to convince yourself. Morphine nailed it. | |

| Summer of Love. One couple's story. Great song. | |
| The Smiths – Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| I've never been able to figure out the meaning of this song (which is why I'm hear, right?). Figuring most Smiths songs have some deeper context, I found it hard to believe it's just about tits, clits or vags, or even overall female size. But then again, some Smiths songs are just silly and witty. So maybe. But I've kind of been convinced that the most likely meaning is the suggestion of "bigger" in the sense of social status. I think that the lyrics are intended to make you think. Confuse you. Why is Moz singing about some girls being bigger than others? He sings it so much that you can't help but wonder what the meaning is. The monotony is quite intentional. It makes you think. And then at the end, you get the answer, as there's an obvious separation of two people who would like to be together but can't due to status. It's not about physical qualities at all. In the age of the "Dole," it may not be 100% forbidden to mix with other social classes, but it's not widely accepted either. It can be difficult in many situations. The reasons are different, but it's similar to a Romeo and Juliet being forbidden to see each other. So in an attempt to be close to the other, and have something by which to remember him/her as they go their separate ways, they exchange pillows carrying each other's scents. So this song that seems on the surgace to be talking about tits is actually a bit deep. Well done. | |

| Little Feat – Skin It Back Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| A great song like this only has one comment (ok, 2 now), and it's that crap? Anyway, in the South skin it back is a slang to go for it, get to work, git 'er done! The author is afraid to talk to the woman he wants to spend his time with and tell her how he feels and what he wants to do. So he's telling himself to skin it back, tell it to her, in other words, just do it. | |
| Sheryl Crow – What I Can Do for You Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| Wow. I guess because it was SC, I figured it was about a music exec trying to get some play with her, a little quid pro quo, you know. But the pimp aspect makes even more sense. I can't believe I didn't see that. (especially since I'm a pimp, you can check my stats) | |
| The Cadillacs – Speedo Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| I don't know why, but I've always like this song. I guess I used to hear it as a young child on some 8-track mixed tape and it brings back good memories. It's about a guy whose name is Mr. Earl, but they call him Speedo. He's the kind of guy who doesn't have time to stop and chat. Go go go, is this fella, especially when it comes to the ladies. Whatever. It's a 50's rock-n-roll doo-wop song. Those don't need meanings. | |
| Blind Melon – Lemonade Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
I'm probably wrong, but.... There's such a thing as self opinion (and this is Shannon's of himself) And this far down South I have no self control (no control over the drug, but he knows it) If anbody else feels like a nobody Well then your gonna have to look out for you (People with low self-esteem and self-worth may be more susceptible to falling into addiction) I'll colour green verything believed in But I keep screaming for my glass of lemonade (I'm not sure about the color green. It could be money or weed, but doesn't make perfect sense either way. Regardless, he going to keep yelling for the lemonade, aka heroin) I walk around and it feels good to be movin' The breeze that's blowin' through cannot be found (affects of the heroin, either on or a brief respite off - I'm not sure which he's conveying here) Jump on the trolley that's headed for all the hollering And then you're gonna have to look out for you (if you jump into the rock 'n' roll scene, good luck keeping off the heavy drugs, It'll be all around and nobody will tell you no.) In desperate need of a little more religion To nurse your God like point of view (as a rock star, you feel like a god. The religion is most likely another reference to the drugs - people on powerful narcs can "find religion" in the drugs, not literally, but it feels like it) Fool on the sheetroof you gotta lay down in your ruins (I think he coined a new term for sheetrock on a ceiling and is commenting on how if you stand on sheetrock, you're going to crash down eventually) The river flowin' by, is way too big to bound (you're going to get swept up in the current of the drug scene, you can't keep it away) If I should speak up, and say hello Mr. Uppercut Oh, how nice to have avoided you (hasn't fallen yet) I'll bloody bleed on everything I'm seeing But I keep screaming for that glass of lemonade (he's dying, he's falling, he spinning out of control and he knows it, but he's going to keep on asking for and getting the heroin) Too much, too much, too much lemonade |

| Phish – Character Zero Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| I'm pretty sure that the song is about making the balcony at the Fabulous Fox Theater in St. Louis bounce like a MFer. For example.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxCPa7wgGTI&feature=related | |

Many times Trey and Tom's lyrics aren't meant to mean anything but rather to paint a picture or evoke a certain feeling. This song certainly evokes a peaceful feeling and that may be all there is to it. However, reading the lyrics, I get the impression of a peaceful ride on a tour bus. Seeing the tumbling greens of the landscape, an occasional pick-up truck screaming alongside. I suppose in a large bus, you may have the feeling of floating on air above the trees (the above the trees part may be a stretch, but with poetic license, it makes sense). The bus itself would be softly singing its song, humming on down the highway. I repeat, the bus is softly siging sweet songs. Silent scenes in motion is well, the scenery, which, of course, you can't hear, but it's moving (or actualy you are, but it appears to be in motion). Somebody on the bus sleeping. You don't wake him/her. You let them enjoy the sleep with the peaceful sounds of the bus signing her sweet song. You try to get some sleep yourself, sitting by the stairs at the front of the bus, but sleep is sporadic at best ("Time, it seems, in broken dreams, to sleep beside the stair"). I'm probably wrong. But it makes pretty good sense. Regardless, it's a very peaceful and relaxing song. It's a trip, it's got a funky beat, and I can bug out to it. |

| Warrant – Heaven Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
Wow. I can't believe I'm going to do this. I wound up here because I thought this song was awful with horrible lyrics (it just popped up on my iTunes and I was laughing at how bad the lyrics are) so I wanted to read them to make sure I was correct and see if anybody offered a differing opinion. As would be expected, most people who are here are because they love the song. So, after getting here and checking out the lyrics and comments, I've slowly come around to a different take on it that actually makes "some" sense. What I've come up with is that each of the 3 verses are at a different stage in the life of this young musician and his relationship with his "little girl," aka his girlfriend (albeit very close stages in terms of years). The first verse is still a little hard to make sense of, but he's talking about an old black and white photo in a town where he used to live and work and date this young beauty. He's trying to become a rock god (a.k.a King of the World) but he's ok and happy just as long as he's got her. The heaven refrain part is talking about getting to complete bliss. They're almost there. He's going to make it, even if her friends say "don't waste your time on him, he's not going anywhere." And even if he doesn't, they have each other, and that's kind of heaven, isn't it? (at least in the minds of youngsters) In the next verse he's speaking more in the present about coming home and giving his sleeping beauty a squeeze. If he's trying to make it as a rock-n-roller, he's going to be coming home very late a LOT of nights. He's toiling, he's struggling, but he's still going after his dream. Again, he mentions that he's not there yet, that he's not a "superman," but that's ok, as long as she loves him. Then, once again they hit the refrain and talk about "heaven" and her nay-saying friends. BTW, who doesn't just love a blue suburban sky? :) The lights going down in the 3rd verse seems to be a metaphor for later years in life, or in this case, the later years in his musical career, with the building lights going out along the boulevard. (I hope it's the building lights and not the street lights, or that could be dangerous!) Anyway, he hasn't made it and the odds look pretty slim now. He's not going to be the rock star. He doesn't know what to do, and that makes him think about the past and the good times when they were starting out and how great everything was going to be, and that hurts. But again, as long as he has her, it's all good. OK. That's the best I can do. On 3rd thought, I'm going back to my original idea. These lyrics suck and don't make sense. HOWEVER, they DO convey a certain imagery and even if they don't jive, the intended sentiment of undying love and bliss is conveyed. And conveying a sentiment is really what it's all about. And, as somebody else said, the song did get many a young man laid in the 80s, so it can't be all bad. So there. |

| Simon and Garfunkel – Mrs. Robinson Lyrics | 14 years ago |

Actually, the song is about a street-walker. NO, wait! That's Roxanne. But seriously, I always thought it was about a pill popping mom. I guess I'm influenced to think that by Mother's Little Helper by The Rolling Stones, which also came out in the late 60s. Having not been alive in the 60s, I've always kind of linked these two songs and assumed that addicted moms were popping pills more than drinking alcohol. Plus, pills seem easier to hide with the cupcakes. But it could definitely be alcohol. I don't think anything indicates one way or the other. |

| Tommy James And The Shondells – Crimson and Clover Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Although I'm certainly not certain, I agree that it's "probably" about tripping. If true, another possibility of what the "crimson and clover" means is the piece of paper that the acid was printed on. LSD used to (may still, I wouldn't know) come on small pieces of paper that have a picture on them. Perhaps he tripped on a fantastic little red square of paper with a clover on it? It's a possibility. | |
| Morphine – Gone for Good Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I've never been able to figure out if the song is implying death/suicide, or if I should take the lyrics for what they say and assume he's really moving on after the sadness of breaking up. With Sandman, it's hard to say. Either way, it's an awesome song. | |
| Alanis Morissette – Hands Clean Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| It makes a lot more sense when you see this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kI1cn04uRNM. Actually, I always thought it had to do with a family member sexually abusing a kid, but what I read about somebody in the record industry dating her when she was in her teens makes absolute sense. | |
