30 something comments and only a few are actually trying to interpret the meaning of this song...Awesome. These lyrics are so complex that I don't think I can justify what the complete meaning is but the first few lines I'm really not sure about so if someone can explain it that would be great. But I feel as though it's such a powerful verse that's saying there is so much to do in this world and there are so many wonderful things in the simplest things. "With a little red bridge with a view of the sun, With a lake, recommend such a sunny sight, And the thousands of stars come out thousands of times, You can go only if you believe." That just gives me such a peaceful image of little things that give us reason to believe and hope. The second verse is kind of like he's taking those positive images of the first and just stating sad situations and negative things that people experience... I'm really not sure. Another interpretation after reading the lyrics over is maybe it's about a guy who is about to die and he's just going through happiness, sadness, and fear before his time comes. He's talking to God asking him if he's ready for him and at the same time he's talking about dying as his only fear but when he's dreaming his fears subside and he comes to terms with it. When he's awake he tells himself he can only go if he believes... maybe in heaven, maybe in reincarnation? But I feel like this could also be about someone he loves and hes talking to them and telling them he loves them before he dies. "When the storm brings rain, snow, fate of all kinds You can feel almost anything When the day seems to melt , fall flat in the night You can feel almost anything When you can’t go on, you got to get up and try This is it can you feel me?" He wants her to keep on believing and going on with her life because he's there next to her; he's asking her if she can feel him by her side. *I don't really know if this makes any sense but all I can really be sure about is that this song is about hope, believing, and living; not letting obstacles stop you from living the life you want to live and moving past the negative things to find happiness even in the simplest of things. This song just makes me feel revitalized... it would be nice to hear someone elses meaning. |

To take a new approach I think this song is about two friends who are in love with each other, but they're also both in relationships. One night when they're on a car ride together, they find themselves alone and end up giving into the temptation they've tried to ignore and sleep together. "We realize that an hour's passed And not a person here is innocent We're both as guilty as a sin" "That's when the puzzle was finally pieced We compromised until our bodies seized To some we seem like colder creatures Well, we were warm until we went to hell" "To some we seem like colder creatures, Well we were warm until we went to hell" this part especially makes me think that they cheated on their bf/gf because some people might think they're cold people or monsters for doing what they did, and they were physically warm when they were having sex, but feel so guilty that they think they're going to hell for their sins. After it happens they know they'll stay together with their current boyfriend/girlfriend and they tell each other that they'll still be friends, but they both know that their friendship has come to an end after this. That's just my interpretation of it but I love how beautiful this song is. People can really just find their own meaning to this song. |

tslax08 I never knew it was about his girlfriend that died in childbirth, it makes complete since that he's kneeling at her grave; I was wondering about that line so thank you for answering that. Your story about your old girlfriend.. I'm sorry that is truly so sad. I could never imagine something like that... no one should have to go through something like that. You must hold this song close and understand it better than most. I know it might not mean much on a song meaning site but, it makes me now realize this songs truest meaning and makes it that much more powerful. I still feel that this song can sum up a break up of two people who are still in love but cannot seem to make it work. They still love each other so much but it's best to go there separate ways for now. "I know your fears and you know mine. We've had our doubts but now we're fine, And I love you, I swear that's true. I cannot live without you." I feel that he's saying that they're trying to move on and even though they were unsure of them not being together anymore (doubts), over time they have come to the understanding that they'll be okay; they'll be fine... Maybe later on there might be a chance they'll meet up and be together again in the future. That's at least what I hope/get out of this song. Maybe giving hope to myself and others with love and old romances. |

Wow. IceDane I really like your interpretation of the song. I agree with you exactly about this song and could not describe it in a better way then you did. I know Switchfoot is known as a Christian band and everything but to me this song isn't about God and religion, it's more about one person who's going through the struggles of life and using their struggles to make a change to improve it for the better. Don't look back and focus on the negatives of your past, just move on like "today never happened." Beautiful song. Meant to Live is my favorite song from Switchfoot but this one is definitely second. |

I agree with the other comments as well. I really think that someone he loved did pass away. When he says: "When I wake up All bottled up A ray of sunshine tells me I am not alone" Maybe "a ray of sunshine tells me I am not alone" means it's the person he loves looking down on him from heaven and she's trying to make her presence known by being the warmth or ray of sunshine that shines down on him in the morning. Maybe trying to say that even though she's not physically there with him he can still feel her. I don't know just a thought! Beautiful but sad song. |
