Dave Matthews Band – Crash Into Me Lyrics 15 years ago
Dave Matthews has said in interviews that he worships women. So I think whoever commented "on another note, i think only dave matthews could turn something perverted like ''hike up your skirt a lil more and show your world to me'', and ''i watch you there through the window vhere i stare, you wear nothing but you wear it so well'' into something poetic" is being a little harsh. The human body is a beautiful thing; why is it perverted for a man (or even a teenage boy) to appreciate seeing a woman's bare body? I'm sure you wouldn't think the same thing if it was someone YOU WANTED, checking out YOUR naked body. Just an opinion. Take it however you wish.

Stir – New Beginning Lyrics 15 years ago
When I first heard this song on the radio, the DJ said that the guy who wrote it said himself that it's about his girlfriend leaving him for another woman.

They Might Be Giants – Fingertips Lyrics 15 years ago
You know how when you're looking in your "My Pictures" folder on your computer and the smaller version of the picture is called a "thumbnail"? Well, that's what this is-- "fingertips" just means it's a small version of a song.

Live – Lightning Crashes Lyrics 15 years ago
What I originally thought seems to be what actually is true: that it is about a baby being born while a woman down the hall is dying. I also think that it could have something to do with reincarnation-- or the life/death cycle.

Live – Dance With You Lyrics 15 years ago
sittin' on the beach
the island king of love
deep in fijian seas
deep in some blissful dream
where the goddess finally sleeps
in the lap of her lover
subdued in all her rage
and I am aglow with the taste
of the demons driven out
and happily replaced
with the presence of real love
the only one who saves

I think this part is self-explanatory. Whether he's meditating or simply with a lover, isn't clear to me, but it's obvious that he is completely filled with peace. I think that what he's saying here is that no matter what your belief about God or any other higher power, love is the only thing that saves us from the evils of the world.

I wanna dance with you
I see a world where people live and die with grace
the karmic ocean dried up and leave no trace

I think this part means that he knows that there are still people in this world that are good, and do good things, but that since there are so many people who cheat us, lie, etc, and since so many bad things happen in the world, we fail to see the good.

I wanna dance with you
I see a sky full of the stars that change our minds
and lead us back to a world we would not face

To me, this has something to do with astrology. For others, it may have something to do with God or another higher power. Basically, those of us who believe that astrology influences our lives and personalities, will look to the stars for clues about decisions we have to make or things that may happen soon. Those who believe in God tend to look up when talking to him, believing that he's in the sky. Then when we feel that we have our answer, we seem to gain courage to make that difficult choice, and are able to face the "real world" with more courage.

the stillness in your eyes
convinces me that I
I don't know a thing
and I been around the world and I've
tasted all the wines
a half a billion times
came sickened to your shores
you show me what this life is for

This is Ed's way of saying that he has respect for this person or being. He's saying that "I know you have more wisdom than I do, and I look up to you, and I am comfortable coming to you for advice or encouragement. You let me know that I have a purpose."

I wanna dance with you
I see a world where people live and die with grace
the karmic ocean dried up and leave no trace
I wanna dance with you
I see a sky full of the stars that change our minds
and lead us back to a world we would not face

in this altered state
full of so much pain and rage
you know we got to find a way to let it go

Again, self-explanatory. He's saying that even though there are bad things happening to us, we cannot allow our negativity to build up.

sittin' on the beach
the island king of love
deep in fijian seas
deep in the heart of it all
where the goddess finally sleeps
after eons of war and lifetimes
she smilin' and free, nothin' left
but a cracking voice and a song, oh lord

I think he's saying that after everything is over, or after you let go of all your pain and negativity, you are free and happy and can do anything your heart desires.

I wanna dance with you
I see a world where people live and die with grace
the karmic ocean dried up and leave no trace
I wanna dance with you
I see a sky full of the stars that change our minds
and lead us back to a world we would not face
we would not face
we would not face
we would not face
we would not face
we would not face

Nirvana – Polly Lyrics 16 years ago
Yes, it is about Polly Klaas. She was actually like 11 years old or something when she was raped, from what I've read, but I could be wrong. I don't remember the story saying whether she died or escaped or what.

Nirvana – On a Plain Lyrics 16 years ago
A common thing among mentally ill people (especially bipolar and schizophrenic people) is that they say a lot of stuff that makes sense to them and them alone. But it could also be satirical about how people who don't like rock (especially hard rock and alternative) claim not to be able to understand lyrics to songs, and in my opinion, how a lot of those people think silly things like "he must have been messed up on drugs when he wrote it." Chances are, in a lot of cases, that he was, but that doesn't mean he was EVERY time he wrote a song.

Nirvana – Where Did You Sleep Last Night (Lead Belly cover) Lyrics 16 years ago
According to Wikipedia it's an old traditional American folk song about a slave in the south. Lead Belly made it popular but it's unknown who the original author was. The original lyrics were something like "Black girl, black girl, don't lie to me, tell me where did you sleep last night? I've stayed in the pines where the sun don't ever shine and shivered the whole night through." It was also known as "Black Girl" or "In the Pines" and has also been performed by such artists as Bob Dylan and The Grateful Dead. Different versions have different lyrics.

Nirvana – Been a Son Lyrics 16 years ago
I just saw a photo of his grandfather holding up a photo album. On the left page of the photo album, is a photo of Kurt, his sister Kim, and their parents. On the right page is Kurt and Kim. Both photos were taken when Kurt and Kim were children; I would guess Kurt was approximately 8 years old. On the caption of the photo, it is explained that after Donald and Wendy divorced, Kurt lived with his father and Kim lived with Wendy. Kurt had a lot of trust issues with his parents after the divorce, and therefore was very protective of, and I quote (from the caption), "his little sister." It later states that "about eighteen years after the photo was taken," meaning the photo on the right, of Kurt and Kim, Kim "came out" to Kurt, so "he immediately expressed concern for her in Aberdeen-- a town not known for tolerance toward homosexuality." So I'd guess that it IS about his sister, but she's not his older sister-- she's his younger sister. And it wasn't because of their parents wanting a boy, although Kurt wasn't so masculine. If it's about his sister, it would have been because she was a lesbian and therefore would have (and probably did) face a lot of ridicule, and basically it would have been easier for her if she had "been a son."

Nirvana – Lithium Lyrics 16 years ago
Side effects of lithium can be more harmful than stopping it when you "need" it.

I personally believe this song was his way of saying "I'm happy regardless of all the difficult times I've gone through/am going through in my life." Or maybe "I'm happy regardless of how others may view my personality."

From seeing interviews with Kurt on TV in the past, he seems to have been slightly unenthusiastic, so when he was really excited about something, maybe it didn't show. He WAS a Pisces, after all, and those traits-- which are also "symptoms" used to diagnosed schizophrenia-- are very common in us fish.

"I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends; they're in my head," could be his way of saying "It's relieving to know who's being honest and who isn't," or in other words, he has figured out which of his friends he can trust and which ones he can't. "I'm so ugly, that's OK, cause so are you, broke our mirrors" is just his way of saying "I know I'm not perfect but neither are you so I really don't need to be so hard on myself." Then the line about "Sunday morning is every day for all I care, but I'm not scared; light my candles in a daze 'cause I've found God," I think that's basically about being treated harshly by religious people he encountered throughout his life. He's telling them basically that he doesn't feel that God is going to punish him because of what THEY think he's doing wrong, and that he thinks it's pointless to go to church or read your Bible or perform certain religious traditions/rituals simply because that's what you've been taught your whole life. I may be going too deep with this, but it's just my own personal perception of it.

And I'm pretty sure he's saying "I'm not gonna crack." I think he's basically saying he's not going to give in, not going to compromise his standards and conform to the status quo because he's happy the way he is.

Nirvana – Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam Lyrics 16 years ago
The original of this song is by the Vaselines. The Vaselines did it basically as a way of criticizing religion. The old Christian hymn you all are speaking of is "Jesus Wants Me For a Sunbeam." I don't remember the words to the hymn, as I only saw that song once, but in my opinion, the lyrics to "Jesus Don't Want Me For A Sunbeam" are basically the artist's way of saying "I made mistakes, I learned from them, so don't expect me to feel guilty and don't expect me to pretend to be perfect when we all know I'm not," and also, "don't expect me to sacrifice my happy life for your miserable hypocritical belief system."

Nirvana – Lake of Fire Lyrics 16 years ago
I personally think that this song is about how people worry so much about material things, not realizing that it really doesn't make any difference because no matter what, it's all going to come to an end, and no matter what happens to your soul when you die, you're not going to need the material possessions you worried so much about while you were alive. The "fourth of July" part... I think it's likely they could have just used that to make another line that would rhyme with the rest of the chorus, as in a lot of older children's songs and rhymes (Miss Mary Mack, all dressed in black, silver buttons down her back, asked her mother for 15 cents to see the elephants jump the fence, jumped so high, touched the sky, never came back till the fourth of July)... either that, or it could have something to do with how the fourth of July is Independence Day for the United States and is seen basically as a time to celebrate our freedom. Basically "won't see them again till the fourth of July," to me, would mean (in this song) "you won't see them until you're free (from your body, the physical world, materialism, etc.)."

Nirvana – I Hate Myself and Want to Die Lyrics 16 years ago
I personally believe it's getting pretty pathetic for people to put on every song "Courtney killed Kurt." This is a place for discussing the meaning of the lyrics he wrote, not for arguing over how he actually died. I do believe he was murdered and it wasn't suicide, but regardless of how I feel about it, there's going to be someone who disagrees even if evidence is finally found that proves it was murder. Besides that, the meanings of all his lyrics don't have anything to do with his death. Some may, if it was in fact a suicide, but other songs were about other issues, whether they were personal issues he was dealing with himself or issues he found to be important to express an opinion about.

Nirvana – In Bloom Lyrics 16 years ago
I never really could figure out what my opinion is of these lyrics until now. I realized that it sounds a lot like it could be about teens, and how it's natural for them to have different emotions and desires, but at the same time, since they're young and haven't yet experienced life, they don't yet understand what any of it means. "He likes to shoot his gun" could easily have something to do with masturbation-- "but he knows not what it means," is like, he knows he's enjoying himself but he's not sure why and also he's not sure what the consequences of his actions will lead to. "Bruises on the fruit" basically has to do with losing your virginity, "tender age in bloom" meaning they're young and vulnerable and easily influenced by what they see or hear on TV, radio, magazines, etc.

Nirvana – Dumb Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree that it has something to do with fitting in and sacrificing your ideals and needs and desires just to get noticed and "liked." I think the parts that say "My heart is broke, but I have some glue" and "The sun is gone but I have a light" are basically his way of saying either a.) everything seems to have gone wrong, and everyone seems to have turned their backs on me, but I am happy regardless of my situation, or b.) life sucks but I will pretend everything is OK if it means I will fit in with "them." It could mean a little bit of both. I know that's how it is for me.

Nirvana – Been a Son Lyrics 16 years ago
First of all I personally believe this song could be about anything: maybe Kurt was talking about how he had feminine traits (he was very self-conscious about being thin, and the more athletic-type guys he went to school with accused him of being gay because he was fairly small); maybe he knew someone who had a girl and wanted a boy; maybe it was about a person who was born with "both parts" and the parents decided she should be a girl but on the inside she identified more with the male gender; or it could simply be symbolic of any feeling of inadequacy and being unwanted.

As for the whole "Courtney killed Kurt" thing, I think it's possible that she could have had something to do with his death, and I really don't believe that he committed suicide. But the fact is, it was ruled as a suicide, and it's very difficult to find evidence so long after a person's death, so we may never know.

Also, as for the note possibly being written by someone else in his handwriting, there are people who believe that it's possible to go into a trance-like state and write things you never would typically. A lot of people call this "automatic writing." Basically the person is unaware of writing anything, but finds something written and somehow finds out later they're the ones that wrote it. Some people freak out and say they just found it; others will admit to having written it but also make sure it's known that they were not aware of what they were doing at the time. Sometimes I wonder if this could have possibly been a "gift" Kurt had, and it was actually kind of like a psychic thing that happened to him and when someone else found it (especially if it was someone he knew well) they didn't want anyone else to know their plan of suicide so they killed Kurt. Wow... that idea just popped into my head... just a possibility though... not like it's a serious theory I've been pondering for years or anything... but it would be interesting to find out....

Nirvana – All Apologies Lyrics 16 years ago
Plus he says "aqua seafoam shame" which I think could possibly have something to do with the water element; water signs in general tend to be very emotional and critical of themselves, especially about traits they cannot change about themselves.

Nirvana – All Apologies Lyrics 16 years ago
I can't say I know what Kurt meant when he wrote this song, but as a fellow Pisces, I personally relate at least to the lyrics themselves in that I always feel guilty about everything that happens, even if it clearly isn't my fault. I still tend to take the blame for everything, and by "married, buried," I think what he means is that he's attached to the feelings of guilt (maybe even an addiction like it is with me) and buried in self-doubt. But that's just how I feel personally when I hear this song. "What else should I be?" meaning, "you don't want me to be myself but I don't want to pretend to be someone I'm not," then "all apologies," added there, of course, means, "I'm sorry I'm not who you want me to be." Then "I wish I was like you: easily amused," basically is a sarcastic phrase about how people tend to be so simple-minded and dramatic about petty things. Again... just my own opinion, as a Pisces!

Nirvana – About a Girl Lyrics 16 years ago
I believe that the original lyrics were "I can't sleep here every night for free," but I could be wrong. The way they are sang, "I can't see you every night for free," can easily make it sound like he's talking about a hooker, but he was talking about his girlfriend which makes it seem more logical to me that the original lyrics were "I can't sleep her every night for free," along with the fact that I'm pretty sure I saw them printed somewhere like that and that's how I've sung it since I learned the lyrics. It just sounds better that way when you actually know the meaning of the song.
