You mean, abstract. There is syntax, so there is tons of content in there, not just tone. Is there an overall content, and not just content in individual lines and small collections of lines? Yes. Is it too obscure for me to talk about? Absolutely. Is this bad? No. Could this sort of thing be bad? Yes. Am I sure that this isn't one of the bad versions? Pretty damn sure. |

He's using cocaine and addiction as a metaphor for love more generally. Drugs are just the vehicle bro. It both is and isn't about drugs, like most of his songs. |

by saying "don't be ashamed or disgusted with yourselves" he is making the assumption that they are ashamed and disgusted with themselves. so i think it's a put-down in a way, but i also like that you think it's sincere. i agree...think of the saying that all music critics are just failed musicians...that's a dig at critics (and quite possibly true), but when you get behind it it's fucking sad. i wouldn't wish failure on anyone and even when critics lash out at something because of this failure, the lashing out is also sad. see reception to 'this night'. |

The first line is referencing the 1982 movie Fitzcarraldo by Werner Herzog. The obsessive will needed to create the film is known to match the character in the film's own obsessive will. (Similar to Coppola and Apocalypse Now). The making of the film and the film are very similar! The reference is fleeting, obscure and does not have an obvious and concrete connection to the piece. This, like many of Bejar's allusions, seem to give the song a feeling more than anything else. The first line of the song, along with every other line, is dense enough to be it's own artwork so his songs feel like accumulations of already complete wholes. One could probably construct an intricate cosmology by connecting these lines but it won't be anything more than a particular instantiation of the general idea of the piece. Reviews of art should be looking directly at the general idea! Viewings of art should be trying to contact this general idea! |

| Destroyer – I Want This Cyclops Lyrics

I lied, I can verbalize what the gist of this song is. It's basically about two hot girls who are flirtatious ("peppering their respective speeches with cupids and commas") yet virgins/hard to get in a relationship ("I Don't Wanna's, I Don't Think Sos"). Deep down they really want someone ("I want this cyclops") but they are holding out for the real deal (not the "criminal element").
This song is so perfect. It's all bouncy and nice and pretty until we get to the climax of "I want this cyclops" which is totally heartbreaking and sincere. I'm amazed Bejar was this good this early. City of Daughters is definitely my favorite (right behind Kaputt). |

I'm so impressed by some of Dan Bejar's early songs. That Destroyer drinking song is a bit unfair to his wide skill set. Look at Kaputt, look at this song. Completely different style lyrics then the middle period stuff.
I can't verbalize what this song is about but I love love love it. |

"Why did you spend the 90s cowering?" This part breaks me down into a soup of pain and regret.
"The world woke up one day to proclaim: 'thou shalt not take part in or make bad art'." This part says that maybe the result of the cowering was best after all or perhaps it explains the cowering.
"You got the spirit, don't lose the feeling." This part says I was wrong to cower and that there's still time.

you cannot burn me up
i'm a fallen leaf who keeps her green
and don't forget I've got my
trusty bag of oh-oh-oh
I always thought it was "trusty bag of herb" and this part was referencing marijuana. Eh? |
