| A lot of people interpret this as being a boyfriend kills girlfriend story, but I interpret it differently. Instead of being the killer, the singer was instead the one to comfort Jenny in her dying moments. They had argued before (which makes the police suspicious of the singer), and perhaps Jenny had stormed off after this argument, only to meet her end at the hands of some random murderer - then to be found by the protagonist. "She couldn't scream as I held her close" because she was too weak to scream. "I swore I'd never let her go" - I interpret this as determination not to let Jenny die, rather than some weird control freakishness. And as for why he sounds angry... perhaps he feels guilty because the last thing he did to Jenny was to argue with her, which potentially led to her death. I know in live performances Brandon (Flowers) changes it to "She couldn't scream as I held her throat" sometimes, which clearly shows the singer = killer scenario, but I still believe the singer is innocent. But that's just my own interpretation. | |

I don't get why so many people try to see how a song is about drugs. I know that often the interpretation is down to the listener, but in this case I just fail to see how it can possibly be about drugs. Can I get your hand to write on - perhaps writing a phone number (as in "call me if you want to come with me"), perhaps just to hold his love's hand Just a piece of lead to bite on What am I to fly my kite on - kites need wind to fly; he wants the zephyr to come, not to fly his kite, but to sweep him away from the troubles of this world Do you want to flash your light on - perhaps this could be as a signal to mean "I want to come with you". Perhaps the man's love has already gone away on a zephyr, and the man wants to join her; for the time being, because they are so far away, they need to use something like flashing lights to communicate. Take a look its on display - for you - he's giving his love an offer, and a choice Coming down no not today - he doesn't want to end the bliss of love; perhaps it means that love can't be rushed Did you meet your fortune teller Get it off with no propellor - flying, but they don't need machines to do so Do it up its always stellar - stellar refers to stars; it could mean they are flying so high they can see the stars up close; perhaps it means he thinks his love is a star to him, guiding him like the stars in the night sky What a way to finally smell her - often we remember someone by how they smelled (think of people smelling a lost loved one's clothes to bring back the memories). Also to smell someone, you need to be up close to that person. The fact that yellow is often associated with cowardice means that perhaps this guy sees himself as a coward (when he says "What a thing to do" he is being sarcastic). I have seen many people comment that "I drew a line" could mean this guy slitted his wrists, the fact that this is "yellow" perhaps means he has taken the coward's way out; he loves this girl, who doesn't return his love to him, so all this grief eats him up inside and, unable to bear all this unrequited love, he kills himself. A similar situation to the one I'm in, except I don't feel suicidal :) Cowardice could also be seen in how he, possibly, never told this girl how he felt; he "drew a line", perhaps a boundary for the girl to cross - ie tell him how she feels about him. He expected her to make the first move - not quite so selfish/cowardly if you see that this guy has done all sorts for this girl, he wrote songs for her, swam and jumped for her. He expects this girl to do something back - perhaps she is too proud to, perhaps she is too cowardly too, perhaps SHE is the one who is "yellow" - indeed, the last line of the fourth verse is "cos you were all yellow". The fourth verse probably means that he did these tough tasks for her because she was too cowardly too. He is being used by this girl, and yet he's oblivious to it. Perhaps he idolises this girl, but knows she isn't perfect; after all, yellow is a sort of deficient gold. He knows she is just skin and bones (so perhaps she is one of these girls who look good but are downright nasty inside), but he still loves her. I can see why people think this song is about drugs, but it seems so unlike Coldplay to write songs about drugs. I can also see why people think this song is about Jesus; personally I think it's just a song about unrequited love, but it is quite viable that it is. |

I'm in a similar situation to you Bodrick, but I haven't really told the girl I like how I really feel about her, I don't know if she knows, other people seem to, either way she just sees me as a friend right now, she hasn't broken off contact (yet). "Nobody said it was easy" - I find it hard to try to tell her how I feel... "It's such a shame for us to part" - I always feel sad when I have to leave her... "No one ever said it would be so hard" - I don't know what to do, should I tell her and risk losing her as a friend, but possibly gain her as a girlfriend; or keep hanging on, always just a friend, no more. "Oh take me back to the start" - I always want to redo things, I know I could have said something better etc, I just love spending time with her "Running in circles" - I feel like this, getting nowhere, always saying "today is the day I tell her how I feel", yet I never do. I really feel for you Bodrick, I know what it's like. I just hope this girl feels the same way about me, because she is probably one of the best things to happen to me in my life. |

Perhaps though he was a friend, but is in love with her, and he hasn't told her yet; he wants to get to business and tell her how he feels about her. I understand the lyrics in two ways. One is about the girl the guy likes, but she doesn't feel the same way to him. The other interpretation is it's about drugs; note the lyrics 'shit', 'on ya', 'that that don't kill me can only make me stronger'. 'black Kate Moss' seems like a drug reference too; Kate Moss did cocaine once. Therefore 'Kate Moss' could be a euphemism for some sort of drug. Either way, it's about addiction of some sort. Cool song, can't get enough of it. I suppose I'm addicted to the song XD |
