Streetlight Manifesto – The Littlest Things Lyrics 12 years ago
I think that's part of it. Feels a lot like the song is simply written from the point of view of a bit of a desperate nihilist. Religious fanatics are screaming about heaven and hell, scientists are screaming about atheism, politicians are screaming about scandals and solutions and all that the singer knows is the famous Socratean detail that he knows nothing. He knows there's a huge amount of lies and bullshit on each side which is why he is literally asking if anybody out there at all can tell him "something true, preferably something that no one can dispute".

The Offspring – Why Don't You Get a Job? Lyrics 13 years ago
Am I the only one who thinks this song is NOT about 'getting a job'?

Cases in point:
1. The Offspring is a punk band. I'm no hardcore Offspring fan, but punk bands are rarely right-wing-ish, let alone right-wing enough to utter the famous "you should just get a job" argument. Usually this argument is used by politicians as an excuse to simply label people who CAN'T get a job for whatever reason as lazy when it comes to economic changes. I think The Offspring knew this very well when they wrote the song, and it seems to contradict what I know of their vision and/or the general punk vision.

2. The song doesn't only seem to switch perspectives between 'a male friend' and 'a female friend', I think the first half is Male A's view towards Female B while the second half is Female B's view on Male A. This would lead the song to be about two people the singer knows that are in a relation and basically yell 'why don't you get a job' at eachother. I.e. the song is about perspectives, or how people in a relationship can both think they're the ones putting in all the work while the other just sits around. It's more of a 'sad paradoxal case' that way than a simple 'if you're lazy go get a job' type of song.

Enter Shikari – Constellations Lyrics 14 years ago
Seems pretty obvious, as mentioned, yeah. As for the 'you' in the constellations part; I was wondering about that myself. My best guess so far is that it's a bit of a 'shoutout' to ES's fans: they are the constellations that guide them through their work.

The Flatliners – Do Or Die Lyrics 14 years ago
Like a lot of Flatliner songs, it's fairly obvious, and it's about depression. I don't think the 'decay' part is as much 'denial of depression', but rather about keeping up the facade of normality to others. It's about someone who is in a place of no return; nobody really cares about him and all he's doing right now is 'running on no sleep', like a machine that badly needs to be oiled. It's rejection by something at its finest, and knowing the Flatliners that something is probably society as a whole.

The Flatliners – Filthy Habits Lyrics 14 years ago
Probably one of the most depressing songs I've ever heard. Shouldn't need much clarification as to the meaning; it's just a really bleak outlook on the world.

Bad Religion – I Won't Say Anything Lyrics 15 years ago
To be fair, I think it's a 'stab' at several of the major powerholders of the earth.

The zookeeper in the human zoo is a politician - he knows society's gone to hell, but can only say it if asked right. If he simply claims stuff has gone wrong, he'll lose his voters and position with that.

The part about the sacramental post would be about religion/the church - "ain't it funny that machines need a ghost" would mean "isn't it funny that people in modern society need some kind of 'god' to believe in to pull through". The bishop/religious figure in this instance replies as well that he can't deny it, but that he can't speak out, as he too would cause a political scandal by claiming so.

The grim proprietor, I'm not sure about. My guess is that he'd represent the CEO of a big company. The I-figure plies to him with "milk and tangerines" which is probably a metaphor as well, just one I don't get. This 'CEO' would scream when the I-figure suggested he weren't 'brutish and mean' since that's what you need to remain at such a position. Then he too ends up singing the chorus and in it admitting he knows society's gone to hell but can't freely admit it in fear of causing a riot or losing his position.

Enter Shikari – Tribalism Lyrics 15 years ago
To be honest, if you ask me, it's not specifically "pro atheism". The line "Whatever happened to thunder? Why can't we accept we're not capable of thunder?" specifically is about as anti-atheistic as you can get. I think the idea of the song is more anti-fundamentalistic, telling people to use their own mind and keep their belief to themselves rather than being specific anti or pro theistic.

Relient K – Forward Motion Lyrics 16 years ago
I know Relient K's reputation as a Christian band, but I'm not sure as to why people are saying this song specifically replies to religion? If you ask me, it's about "forward motion" and "change" in general, not specifically about "getting closer to god". I'd say this is one of the songs they've written that barely have any religious relation, contary to songs like "Maybe it's Maybelline" and "When I Go Down" where 'god' is actually specifically mentioned.

On the other hand, loads of Relient K's songs can be interpreted in various ways as they're often about larger subjects.

Combichrist – Fuck That Shit Lyrics 16 years ago
I think the song is quite literally about "revolution" - as soon as people start saying "fuck that shit" about something it is generally the start of a revolution against said object.

Bad Religion – Requiem for Dissent Lyrics 16 years ago
I think everybody's taking it too far, but Maxben got pretty close. The song is called "Requiem for Dissent" and a lot of you seem to not notice the meaning of dissent; the opposite of consent. I think all this song is trying to say is that mankins lately has been taking too much for granted and that we need to keep the 'dissidents' alive and that we basically need constant critique to keep a healthy society going. In that view, it simply really is a "requiem of dissent"; a song telling us to keep thinking and utter critique rather than taking everything for granted.

De Staat – Sleep Tight Lyrics 16 years ago
Seems pretty straightforward, it's a song about how for their entire lives people are being drilled into going with the flow and are being told to "just be like him her, this that, them those", rather than being themselves and not following the basic system. 'Sleep tight' is directed at the people who do follow this system and never know anything else.

Bad Religion – Faith Alone Lyrics 16 years ago
Contrary to what's been posted, this isn't about religion. Religion specifically, anyway. It's a call to 'rise up' with the message that faith alone (be that in god or whatever else) won't sustain us anymore. I'd say the line "Watched the scientists throw up their hands conceding progress will resolve it all" gives this away, really.

Bad Religion – Bored and Extremely Dangerous Lyrics 16 years ago
I think several people got very close with school shootings, but I don't think it's necissarily about a 'shooting'.

It's definitely not about "someone who'se really lonely". At least, not in a direct way. It seems to speak about youth that is quite literaly "bored" with the way they're supposed to live because they don't really have anything to do and is "extremely dangerous" due to the fact that they take this out on other people. This could mean Columbine, but this could also mean beating up a random person for no reason. And all this because nobody ever listens to what the kid really wants, the whole world is pushing him to "go to school, get a job and then you've got it made", to quote a Planet Smashers song.

A Wilhelm Scream – Jaws 3, People 0 Lyrics 16 years ago
You set me onto something MZA! I think the song as a whole is about junks and drug users. It's partly a lament due to it stating there is no help for them ("The weak are screaming for the captain but the captain ain't here") and partly a judgement, because when Nuno sings "And if the devil's at your door you leave it open, let him in" he's probably refering to the fact that all drug users once willingly started the path down to becoming a junkie.

Bad Religion – Sinister Rouge Lyrics 16 years ago
I too think this song is about the catholic church and more specifically, the inquisition. Reason for this is because the lyrics to the song are quoted halfway through an e-mail from Greg to Preston that is specifically talking about the inquisition.

Wir Sind Helden – Die Konkurrenz Lyrics 17 years ago
"Sag's mir, Hippiekind"

"Sag's mir, kleiner Punk"

"Ihr singt: „Alle für einen, einer für alle!“
Dann kommt einer und macht alle anderen alle
Am morgen geht's eilig und früh aus der Falle
Du singst: „Jetzt bin ich der Eine und ihr andern seid alle!“"

I think those 3 pieces of text hold the main idea on what this song is about. It's about the 'competition' on belonging to a specific sub-culture. One starts off being for example a punk to feel companionship among other punks. Then a new 'wave' of punks appears and calls all the other ones posers so you have to 'step it up' to stay a 'true punk', and this phenomenom keeps repeating itself over and over.

Basically, I think it describes the need to be 'hardcore' in a scene to be akknowledged.

A Wilhelm Scream – Check Request Denied Lyrics 17 years ago
And yet another tough one... I reckon the whole song is about religion...

"The cross you bear, your favorite shelter" is probably referring to religious people using their religion as an excuse for their deeds.

The check request here sounds to me as if 'religion' is asking AWS to think of it in an okay way... To which AWS replies "When a ... request's denied".

"I stared at heaven trough the gates of hell
liked the weather, couldn't stand the smell"

Basically he's saying he's currently in hell, either in the meaning of feeling depressed, or because he doesn't believe and is thus sentenced to hell as the religious say. He's looking at 'heaven', the thing that's 'perfect good' according to religions... He somewhat likes it, but he can't stand the smell; the 'heaven' that religion has brought up doesn't seem to be all that grand after all.

The next verse is a typical AWS one, don't have a clue there... Then on from

"It's the blood from the rock
that you can't get enough
that razor's love for bitter me
who's batching up the harmony?
with a smile that said i'm guilty,
I stood up:
I left heaven at the gates of hell
and i am never going back"

Seems to get back to the subject; the singer is 'batching up the harmony' by expressing his hate for (organised?) religion. He's seen 'heaven' and has decided it's definitely not what he reckons is a perfect world.

Either that, or I am completly mistaken and the sentence "The cross you bear" is a metaphor as well.

A Wilhelm Scream – Jaws 3, People 0 Lyrics 17 years ago
Very nice and clear description, I think you're far more accurate than my guess here.

To fill in the part following the "Like a drunk spilling boons" part;

"can we forgive a ship of fools for what they don't know better?
I guess not."

Obvious; can we forgive a world of fools for wrecking it if they don't know better?

"Man I hope he'll piss himself.
Analyze this room.
Grab that mop and broom and clean it up.
Man I hope he shits himself"

Sounds to me like a shout out. Replace the word "room" with "world" and it seems to become a lot clearer. Tieing in with the last part of the song, he hopes that man shits himself while cleaning up his own mess.

"when the rest of the shipwrecked long drowned in their graves
make a claim on the souls of the heartless fakes.
"Please help, my party flew away with the ocean mist.
I narrowly escaped to the roof." "

Phew... The rest of the shipwrecked are probably the people who see that we're fucking up the world but don't have enough influence to fix it. They make a claim on the souls of the heartless fakes (the important people who *promis* to fix things at times), saying they only barely escaped *something*. Come to think of it, it sounds like it's mentioning refugees which have fled from war-torn countries (the war being fueled by the heartless fakes).

"But when the Night Rangers found me (dead, but for my liver)"

Not the slightest clue to who exactly are meant by the 'night rangers' (aside from people in the service of the heartless fakes). Dead, but for my liver... this might be a long shot, but... Alhocol is a drug, right? The only thing the person in question has left is the ability to "do" something which might make him feel good, but is in fact wrong... criminality?

"and said "Don't tell me you love me", abhorrent and deliberate.
How we ruined the day's remains. Sinful."

"Don't tell me you love me" is a bit more clear, I reckon it refers to what Europe and America are currently telling immigrants from poor countries who are attempting to secure a better future here. How we ruined the day's remains? Sinful... Criminality yet again?

The Planet Smashers – King Of Tuesday Night Lyrics 17 years ago
It isn't too hard if you just read it trough. It's about a reporter, referred to as "The king of tuesday night". The song states "he can say just about anything he wants" about bands, and that "his publication is the heartbeat of the streets". The phrase "The king of tuesday night" propably has something to do with magazines being printed on tuesdays or such, though I can't exactly relate it to anything.

The Planet Smashers – Trip And Fall Lyrics 17 years ago
Contrary to what one would expect, I think that's not exactly what the song is about. It's sang in a sarcastic way;

"In a stagnant state
Trouble finds me"

I think that they mean to say that in our modern day society you GOTTA "stand tall, even when you trip and fall", because you're not going to get a moments rest when something messes up.

Easy peasy...

"This song is for you
Because you work so hard

The Planet Smashers – Unstoppable Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is somewhat straightforward, according to me the key lies in the part that says;

"Are you waiting?
The world, it falls apart
They are unstoppable
Are you, ready, to do, all that you can?
And stop the unstoppable"

Basically they're saying like a lot of the (ska)punk bands out there that there's a huge 'wave' of big and powerful people messing up our world, and even though those people might be unstoppable, we should be "ready to do all that you can".

The Planet Smashers – Mighty Lyrics 17 years ago
This song seems to be referring to the situation where one person does something, inspiring others, inspiring more others, eventually triggering a snowball-avalanche effect.

"Your tiny steps add up and show us
All together, we are fighting
You may feel small but you are still mighty"

Basically it tells that no matter how powerful you actually feel, there are a million of ways open to you with which you can have impact on a huge amount of people.

Anti-Flag – The Smartest Bomb Lyrics 17 years ago
Another plainly brilliant song by Anti-Flag... The meaning isn't hard to understand, it's the message they always convey; the world is fucked up.

"This song's the smartest bomb" is referring to the uselesness of war, stating that them shouting out their opinion and triggering response is a smarter way of "fighting" than dropping bombs. The rest of the song more or less points out facts like "Every day we've been taught to follow".

Bad Religion – All There Is Lyrics 17 years ago
Doesn't "pedestrian" also mean pretty much the same as "citizen"? It fits right after your interpretation nyghtcrawler, stating that if you have to be somewhat corrupt to be able to 'fly'.

About the divinity part; I think it's a statement about being unable to have any serious impact. The singer's divinity, his best qualities, are caught in something "beautiful but small and very easily overlooked". As in "The message of peace the band tries to give is locked in a world [of music] that's beautiful, but will probably never really be noticed".

And yes, punk is so right... But like Anti-Flag puts it; "What have we done? You don't know. Untill you care. You never will". And even if you try to discuss about it with someone they won't be able to give better arguments than "punk sucks". If you like this and fancy harder stuff at times, look up "A Wilhelm Scream"... They're solemnly brilliant in their lyrics, and have great instrumental play as well, conveying somewhat the same message as Bad Religion.

A Wilhelm Scream – These Dead Streets Lyrics 17 years ago
The chorus of this song seems pretty clear to me. "You and me, we will resurrect these dead streets" is pretty much literally AWS saying they and us (as their fans) will make the world a better place. We'll 'resurrect' the 'dead streets' of ghost cities where nobody talks to eachother anymore, and everybody is technically an enemy of one another.

The 'verses' (the first and third parts) are a lot harder though.
"Mama and papa got liquor
And gun stores
Torching this city down"
Probably describes in a short way what turned our cities (or society) into the "dead society" we need to resurrect; liquor and guns.
Then there's the recurring theme of "food";
"We went away to the mountains
To corporate restaurants,
Corporate food",
"When the mayor owns a pizza chain",
"We blame our diets on changes in mood"
I reckon this is AWS making a comparison with the music industry once again; the "mayor" is "the rich people" or "the government", and they "feed" people lies ("food"). The mayor owning a pizza chain would pretty much mean the "top" of a land (probably a [certain?] president) 'owns' the media and its ways of throwing lies at the populace.
Then there's
"I had a thought and i lost it
It was a monument, decent and pure"
I reckon that's the singer saying he had a thought (vision) of how great the world could be.
And lastly there's
"Took out a razor and made my own Picasso
Hold me when I'm ready now"
And I don't have the slightest clue how I should take this.

A Wilhelm Scream – Jaws 3, People 0 Lyrics 17 years ago
Alright, I'm going to have a try.

The whole first part of the text, up to "... from the light", literally is about a boat sinking, I reckon. I think it's the same comparison as made in "5 to 9", and the 'sinking boat' should be compared to a situation in which we've got rid of all the untalented mainstream stuff. It's a hard guess, but I might be near it.

The last two verses I find a bit easier to comprehend. I reckon AWS is referring to people like Britney Spears in the first; when being a popstar finally backfires at them, let them feel the result of being greedy bitches. "If the devil makes a mess of all the raw meat, let him be". I really don't have a clue what the second verse there is referring to, there's nothing I can logically relate to it.

A Wilhelm Scream – Die While We're Young Lyrics 17 years ago
Parts like the first verse seem rather obvious, it's the world from the view of your avarage person with the "bullshit job". The pigs with the golden watches are probably a representation of the 'rich and corrupt' people. The hardest part is probably the main theme, "Let's die while we're young". I reckon there are 3 possibilities for what AWS is trying to say from here:

A) It's better to die young then to grow up and get a bullshit live (with a bullshit job)
B) They mean "die" more or less as in "party"; it's best to get wasted and have fun while you're young, because when you grow up you'll be locked up in that bullshit live.
C) "Die" is directed at the educational part of life. As in: "You die while you're young" because you get educated to be a mindless drone (with a bullshit life/job).

I realize AWS can make some pretty sarcastic/sad themed songs (like a lot of punk[like] artists), but I still reckon option A is the least likely. Both B and C seem equally logical to me.

Anti-Flag – You've Gotta Die for the Government Lyrics 18 years ago
I'd just like to say that all the people saying "If America is so bad, why don't you move?" are quite ignorant.

1) Not everybody can just 'move' like that.
2) Where should we go where the situation isn't the same?
3) If we leave USA... will the problems resolve? No, millions will still die at it's government's account. THAT is what (imo) punk is protesting against.
4) Calling Anti-Flag dumb and telling others to move in 1 post? Come again mate. Anti-Flag is actually smart enough to have anticipated people yelling "If you don't like America, move". There's a song by them especially for you! Just look for the lyrics to "Right on".

And one last point; I wonder who ever came up with the sentence "Punk is dead". Think of it clearly for a second... ASIDE from not being able to define 'punk'... why is it dead? There's plenty of bands out there who people at least define as punk... In fact, I reckon punk is more listened to then say old-school jazz... Wouldn't that make old-school jazz death too?

Whatever people say, the fact remains that people have died and are dying on large scales to keep the American government (and therefore Americans, of which a large number are completly ignorant and do not even know why they vote for Bush) up and running. I recall that one post saying something about "What's so wrong about a war for oil?". Well, nothing, if you don't mind poorer people dying for you. That's life? I wonder if you'd say that if you had to live of crumbs, had a day-job protecting your neighbourhood with a gun and had a constant fear of giving birth to a mutated and deformed child to add up to the 3 you already have.

Punk, and Anti-Flag is for people who want peace, equality, and an end to suffering. And most of all, for people who have opened their eyes to all the shit going on in this world. Judging from the main arguments of all the nay-sayers (Personal bashing and "if USA's so bad, move!"), and the fact that Anti-Flag for one is loooong past that point, ánd the fact that you can't think of arguments why you could be wrong yourself, are one reason for me to stick with the 'right' side.

Open your eyes.
