I've listened to and appreciated many "sad" songs, but this one is the most heart-wrenching I've come across. Sufjan seems to completely capture the experience of feeling utterly powerless and unable to continue living. The second half of the song, with the inclusion of the higher chords, gives it a transcendental feeling. I value this song, along with many more of Sufjan's, because of its palpable intimacy. When listening with earbuds, the quiet delivery makes it seem as if he is whispering his secrets in your ear. What is amazing is that he is able to write about others' experiences with the same authenticity as his own. I hope he'll be touring again soon! |
