I think this song is about suicide. I've worked the lyrics out to sound like this :

This song is utterly brilliant from start to finish. While some songs have made me cry before, I was usually already in a sad state before listening to it. This one is different, I can't suppress my tears in any way, especially when paying attention to the lyrics. It's beyond my comprehension.

I've been deciphering the song for the past half hour. I think I'm pretty close. In my opinion it's clearly about dying (e.g. after a long struggle, a terminal disease etc.) and accepting it ("take away all the fear, and let me fall asleep").

That's what the fadeout at 2:30 symbolizes. The person who spoke up to that part has just passed away. The next part "She will never return" is contemplation by the lover/friend who was with her in her last moments, saw it happening.

I'm still not sure what the first line of the chorus is. At 3:59 it's clearly not "Goodbye". "You know" sounds possible, but I'm still unsure. I wished that Ulrich himself would chime in to fill in the gaps.

This song wouldn't be out of place at a funeral. Too bad that the lyrical content is so incomprehensible, although the vocoder surely adds to the atmosphere.

Couldn't find these lyrics anywhere, so I listened very carefully several times and tried to make it out as best as I could.

The lines I'm most unsure of are those that start with 'ever' and 'held', which I wanted to mark to indicate my uncertainty; but I saw that it was against the site rules.

Anyway, apologies if this isn't 100% - it's very hard to make out, as you've probably realised yourself :)

Lovely song though. Not sure I could guess at its meaning, other than what's most obvious... having to let go of a dream you wish you could keep. I imagine most of us have been there...

Well, I certainly agree that the lyrics are very hard to discern accurately. Sometimes I hear different words! But I am sure that the line you have as "don't go" is actually "don't cry". I will attempt one day to listen and verify the rest of the lyrics for this song. It is indeed a wonderful song.

This one of the most beautiful, yet one of the saddest, songs I've heard in a long while. I agree, its very hard to comprehend the lyrics exactly, but I don't think its about suicide. I think its more about a girl leaving a boy who loves her, he knows she'll never come back, and she was his life. Now he doesn't know what to do without her; hes 'cold', in the sense of his emotions. Amazing song.

I've been so frustrated that nobody seems to have the definitive lyrics for this amazing song. I ended up spending 2 - 3 hours with a graphic equalizer in an attempt to isolate the words from the music. There is some pretty impenetrable sibilance created by the effects on the vocals, but I finally came up with something that I'm 98% happy with. Please respond if you're certain that I have something wrong.

As for the meaning, I prefer not to know the exact meaning as it adds an air of mystery. I think this is probably Ulrich's most beautiful work so far. When I got the album I played this one song over and over for about 3 days!
