I think this is about business, office work. like in the stock market. Think Patrick Bateman and co. in American Psycho. It's quite a face paced, faceless world where appearence and money are everything. The protagonist of the song is breaking all the rules of conduct, and taking the piss out of how shallow it all is. |

i agree, a tirade against corporate rock, and a stale music scene. But also a call to arms, a request for others to challenge genre boundaries for the sake of art rather than conform to shift units... |

I get the impression thas this is about the emptiness of our current climate, how we are basically told through advertising, the goverment etc. what to think, do, eat etc. The narrator just wants something real and concret to believe in.

I was doing English Coursework on lyrics and contacted Frank via Myspace, he, ever the gentleman was kind enough to reply - "it seemed something worth commenting on, and it's emphatically not a song about the 1980's. i guess the wider point is that political and economic policies have an impact beyond the news cycle. or something." Like he says its about the long term effects of what people do. Just because it looks like a good idea now doesn't mean it will suit the long term
