@[arnold1056:35908] This is Liz saying it's "deaf before dawn", not me. You're contradicting the person that wrote the song. This is from an interview that came out in the Village Voice in 2008, and it's still up if you google it. |

Thanks for the reply. I definitely hear "Caught in the town where I fell asleep" as well. Or maybe "Caught me down when I fell asleep"? I don't know.
I agree with the "then he" and "shining bright" parts, but I can't figure out the whole verses and that's quite frustrating.
Also I'm not sure about the "just to be close" verses, it also sounds a bit like "reach to the core" or "reach to the cold".
This is the live version I found, it might help a little bit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ee29L0xoXEo |

Got some of these lyrics from the only live video that I could find on YouTube. I'm still unsure on a lot of these verses but hopefully you guys can help me out. |

Well, even if that's the word she wants to say, I don't think that's what she actually says. I hear something like "cosmáuticas" or "cosmáticas". |

Liz once said that this song was about deception. It's actually a feminist song that uses the idea of Rapunzel. She said, "I'm sort of switching it around and locking up a boy in the castle instead of a girl. It's sort of like saying you should go through some of the experiences... like if I had a son, I would raise him to understand what it is like to be a girl. (...) I use a lot of fancy images just trying to say that if men knew what it was like to be a woman, the world would be a better place." |

Instead of "They took it all, and left you to the bread board", it's "They took it all with a view to the great fall".
This is one of my favourites from the new album. |

Yeah, the lyrics on the Total Life Forever website say "I bite my nails to the quick run back home". And I agree with zlan, I'm also pretty sure it's "Come and be accepted, affected, protected".
Anyway, great song with a very good bassline. It's addictive. |

I've read and interview about Guyville and Liz said:
"This song ['Canary'] is a perfect example. This isn't talking about a guy; it's talking about me and my home life with my family, having this stressful relationship with this quasi-abusive brother, and trying to be a good little girl for everyone while all this shit was going on inside me. And I had these contrary feelings and inappropriate thoughts, and my piano was where I would go. I was allowed to practice piano, so instead of practicing, I was making up these subversive songs. This is probably fucking the oldest one on Guyville, now that we come to it, because I can see myself in my parents' house, and what I'm saying is: 'Send it up on fire in the music, up to the heavens. I will be deaf and stop listening to you all before I will shut up. Deaf before dawn.' There is a line in there about sex, like: 'I come when you circle the cherry/I sing like a good canary'– but that's acknowledging that even later. I think that would've been a line added later... rewritten, in a sense, to describe... I'm still there. I'm still stuck in a context where I have no voice, but I'm inside here somewhere." |

I would say the lyrics are pretty straightforward. The simple reason I don't agree with sav127 is that this song was actually written before Exile in Guyville. |

This is one of the best songs I've ever heard. I also think it's about (un)conformism in a relationship. And it has some dirty lines indeed. |

Well, a non-babelfish translation would be:
Things that happen as a setback
Are not subject to consensus
They stay in the depths
While the residue perishes
Wisdom made in the sleeve
Serve to the present state
It remains distinct
While the majority hinders
If the relationship between the setback
And the present time
Assimilate
Space trips wouldn't be necessary [dunno about this line. "cosmáticas" doesn't exist, but it suggests something related to space. and it's definitely not "asmáticas" (which means "asthmatic")]
The theories would be attended
But intelligence limits human autonomy.
The grammar on these lyrics is very very fractured, and it doesn't seem to make much sense. You can see that on the translation I made. Still, it's a very pretty song and it's constantly stuck in my head. :) |
