| I'm not exactly sure what this song is about...but I believe it's talking about a girls struggle with her lover about having sex. She is angry at him for pressuring her but at the same time she wants it and cannot be angry because all he wants is to "be part of her" My interpretation seems rather shallow for Ingrid Michaelson, however, so other interpretations would be wonderful. | |

I believe emeraldcity84 was making a joke lol... But this song is most definitely about falling in love for the first time, just as momentswesteal described. She is saying that she is happy with the girl she's become, a strong, independent woman who can fend for herself. Why should she fall "overboard" for anyone when she could be successful on her own without the fear of a broken heart? By the end of the song, however, she's come to terms with the fact that she will fall for this guy and all will be ok. This song speaks to so many girls like me, afraid to take that first dive into love. I used to listen to this song when I was contemplating going out with my first boyfriend. It is very inspiring. Ingrid really speaks to the soul. |

| Anna Nalick – Citadel Lyrics | 17 years ago |

This song is not about suicide. It's about having a dream and going for it for the first time in your life and all of the fears associated with that. The whole chorus outlines her fears of reaching for her goals and dreams (What if I fall? What if I don't? What if I never make it home? What if I bleed? What if I break and I find that I can't take the city below the citadel holding my own hand?) The citadel represents where she is in her life at the time of the song. She's "sitting" on this citadel, above a "city" (which represents the realization of her dreams) but she's afraid to go down there because of her fears outlined in the chorus: -What if she falls or fails at reaching her dreams? -What if she is actually successful at what she does? Sometimes that's scarier than failing. -What if she "never makes it home" or loses herself in the process of finding success? -What if she "bleeds" or "breaks" or has a rough road to success, not necessarily failing all together but having trouble getting to her dreams? -What if she "finds that she can't take the city below the citadel"? What if she becomes successful but realizes it's not for her? I think this song for Anna represents her fear of becoming a successful music artist, but it can really represent anyone's fears of reaching for, failing to met, or successfully getting to their dreams. |

It's so amazing to me how once you listen to Anna Nalick's CD, Wreck of Day, long enough, you come to learn that all of her songs fit together. I find that Soldier is the main story, and that the other songs fit into it. I wrote a string of stories based on this song for my english class. I came up with this: I. Soldier A. More Than Melody: the girl and boy fall in love B. Forever Love (Digame): they promise to love eachother forever C. In The Rough: The boy comes back, but they are not in love anymore. D. Bleed: They have broken up. E. Drink Me: The girl starts a new life, and sees the boy at a performance F. Catalyst: This is the boy talking to his new girlfriend/wife. She wants to leave him, and he doesn't want her to leave. G. Breathe (2AM): this is a bit of a stretch, but the wife finds the old girlfrind and they go together to get a divorce H. Wreck of the Day: the conclusion to everything What do you guys think? I know, it's not Anna's life, but the stories worked out quite well. |
