Tower Of Power – What is Hip? Lyrics 12 years ago
Why does this song even have lyrics? T of P is so unearthly funky, why not just let the band groove for eight minutes, and skip the silly lyrics?

Elton John – Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Lyrics 14 years ago
For the record, Elton did NOT always know what the songs he was singing meant. Did you happen to see him (Elton) on "Inside the Actors' Studio?" James Lipton (the host) asked Elton the meaning of "Take me to the pilot, Lead me through the chamber..." and Elton said "I have no idea."

If so (and I happen to agree), I find songs like these a little ironic. Here are two guys who have made a wad-o-money in the music industry, complaining about it. Reminds me of "Hotel California." I wonder if the artists whistle it on the way to the bank to cash checks. And if this song was written before Elton and Bernie made their zillion, should they be so negative about an industry they want so badly to succeed in? See the irony? I always think of New York when I hear this song, because Oz was supposed to be partly a metaphor for New York (Oz = NY, work the letters out), and New York is certainly "where the dogs of society howl." Has anybody ever done a song praising the entertainment industry?

Carly Simon – You're So Vain Lyrics 15 years ago
Who is the bass player (who plays that nutty riff at the beginning of the song)?

Art Garfunkel – Disney Girls Lyrics 15 years ago
This is a wonderful, evocative song; a bunch of snapshots of a simpler time. To me, listening to this song is like leafing through an old photo album. I didn't know 'til recently that his was a Beach Boys cover.

The Rolling Stones – Down the Road a Piece Lyrics 15 years ago
I had to sing this song in a cover band, and I could never understand the line "shove and sting like an old steam drill." After listening to the original about 100 times, I wasn't even sure that that was what ole Mick was saying, but I couldn't figure out an alternative interpretation, either. Does an old steam drill really shove and sting? What is Mick saying?

Queen – Mustapha Lyrics 16 years ago
Don't know what his song means. Don't really care. The most plausible explanation seems to me to be that Freddie was combining Arabic-sounding parody with gibberish. Whatever, Freddie. The thing that's amazing to me about this song is it's use of alternating mono/stereo production. At the beginning of the song, it's in mono: everything sounds like it's coming from the center; nothing is discreetly coming from the left or right. Then as soon as the guitars start crunching, it goes to stereo. Then, in the middle, when there's that descending guitar lick, you can hear both guitars move from right and left to both in the center. Amazing! Queen was so far ahead of the curve. They do similar things with stereo on all their albums: check out "Prophet's Song" on "A Night At The Opera" on a good pair of headphones. Mindblowing!
