This is my ultimate favorite song. Though I don't know the true inspiration for it, I know what the song represents to me. I am a survivor of child abuse. I grew up in a very abusive house hold. This song reminds me of walking around on eggshells, never knowing when the shit was going to come down and how. I could be feeling warm and happy, only to be met with the back hand of a fist. Children are forced to surrender to the will of the adults of the house. My stepfather had a way of spinning things around to where everything was our fault. The last verse makes me think of the bad relationships I had when I got older. I was looking for comfort, but found pain. It is no coincidence that I met my husband the year I started listening to "Wood Face". I was going through a period of soul searching and Neil Finn helped me find my way. He taught me how to recognize a good man. Now I listen to this song and it reminds me not to take things for granted and to never surrender to someone else's will. |

This song reminds me of my mother. I take this song to be about an abusive relationship. Glen Phillips is an outside observer who can see how this man fakes a smile when in public, but can see he has a way his anger. The line, "He'll take it a mile to see how far he'll go" send chills up my spine. This woman dosen't have enough confidence in herself to know that she deserves better. Instead she fools herself in believing in a fantasy that he is there for her and their lives are intwined, but it's all in her mind. Glen Phillips is saying I know. I can see it. When you finally had enough, I'll be here. Make sure you come to me when you finally have the courage to tell me everything! |

| Oooops, I forgot. We are collectively brain damaged because we can't learn and until we get rid of our "Us and Them" mentality, we will never be EXRAORDINARY! | |

This song is pure genius! What it is truly about is HISTORY and the insanity of how we allow it to continue repeating itself. We will never learn to live in peace because we will never learn how to learn from our mistakes. God only know it's not what we would choose to do, (Yet we allow it to happen) Think of all the great generals in history, Alexander, Cesar, Nepoleon and how many people died to extend the boarders of their empires. Up and down, where the many empires that rose to power, but eventually fell to be replaced by another which later fell, and the cycle of power goes round and round as the earth continues to turn. It's a battle of words. We could talk things out peacefully and negotiate, but instead we jump on the war wagon with the men and their guns. Down and out, it can't be helped, but there's a lot of it about... goes to the people who shrug their sholders thinking, what do you expect me to do about it? But history shows misery festers. Those kept down grow resentment for those who have life easy. This causes them to revolt. Out of my way, it's a busy day and I got things on my mind. We are too obsessed with ourselves to notice what's going on in the world around us. The old man dies, taking all the knowledge he has gained from his experiences in history, leaving the next generation to make all the same mistakes. We need to pay attention to our world and what is going on. We need to stop thinking only ourselves and do what we can to help make this world a better place, or the insanity will continue and we will never live in peace. |
