I also think it's about life's ups and downs and how you mood can change (like the seasons). It think the song focuses on the downs mainly. "Smiling as the shit comes down" is one of my favourite lines ever.

Neill Finn has told that this song is about Melbourne. And on the surface it definitely is...But he gets deeper, and speaks about much more. As Kaatrien said, its about the good and the bad, or as Neill has put it "the rough with the smooth...the clean with the dirty"

Paul Hester is the drummers name, and he says "you have to be prepared to take the good with the bad" during a live performance of "sister madly" where he made a mistake...Neill goes on to say Rough with smooth, clean with dirty etc..

Each day can bring anything.......good and bad, summer and winter

The thing which makes this song great is that it can mean something to everyone. The ambiguity of the lines allows it just to represent one heck of an emotional day.

I dont think there was any need for the up-tempo of the chorus. it seems like it doent fit in the melancholy song, what does everyone else think?

Everyday is a new surprise, who knows what the dawn may bring. Each morning is like starting over, getting another chance to find what you're looking for. And like everyone else has said just taking the good with the bad because you can never know how great the good things in life are without experiencing the bad.

For years the only only Crowded House tracks I knew were 'Weather With You', 'Don't Dream It's Over' and 'Fall At Your Feet' - they all are favourites of mine. Now I stumbled across this track, and it's beautiful and fantastic - I love it basically!

All in all, I think the song is basically about change and growth. Something can be so perfect one minute, and then totally shitty the next. It's about taking things as they come and dealing with them, each, different day can bring anything your way.

That's what it means to me anyway.

Thought I should add..

After analysing this song some more, I think that it is also very much about Paul Hester, who is known to be veyr moody. Infact 'Black and White Boy' is also said to be about Hester.

I agree with nails_in_my_feet. Even if it wasn't intended to be about the great Hessie, it certainly could be applied to him (from what i've heard).

Amazing song - my fave of all Crowded House tunes. I will always adore the lyrics, esp. "Finding out wherever there is comfort There is pain Only one step away"

surely this song is about auckland and not melbourne, as neil finn is an aucklander and it is known that it like four seasons in a day there. awesome song all the same
