Madonna – Miles Away Lyrics 17 years ago
it seems to me there is actually a physical distance being referenced in the song but that there is an "echo" of that distance even when they are together....
she makes reference to him not really seeing her...looking through her, and her pretending to be someone else...then indicates that it is easier for her lover to say he loves her and is more generous towards her when they are apart...but when they are actually together they sit in awkward silence....

sounds a little like they never had a strong foundation for a relationship in the first place...that he doesn't really know, love or appreciate her for who she really is....when he's far away he can pretend she is a different person, and treats her more warmly...but when they are together and there is no way to pretend she is a different person - is forced to face who she really is...he cannot be warm or affectionate towards her...because he doesn't love the "real" her..he loves the one that lives in his mind...and that he carries with him when they are apart...

and of course its really clear that this causes her tremendous pain...she really want him to love who she really is...but the longer this goes on the more clear it is to her than he cannot love her...so she is lonely and sad...both when he is physically far away, and when he is physica lly present...but emotionally still far away....

Blaqk Audio – Stiff Kittens Lyrics 18 years ago
OK...two (favorite) ways I can think of to interpret this song... there may be lots of interpretations and they may all be right or wrong...and the more I learned the more I think this...but here we go....

meta level....
the song could generally be interpreted as a message about a long-term relationship that goes hot and cold over time...an expectation that two people will be together forever (almost predestined it seems references like "owned this life forever" and "born for this forever") but they break apart, get back together repeatedly. my first interpretation of this was based a lot on what I thought was meant by "sanctuary" and "desecration"...an almost literal interpretation based on a vow that the relationship was sacred, and the breaking apart and getting back together as a form of desecration [esp if it involves infidelity] (done so frequently as to be an art form). In spite of some of what I will say later, I think this meta message is intentional, especially with the almost sexual allusion to "forget your restraint" (why restrain yourself in any way with a person with whom you are destined to be, even if you've been apart for a while?) Why...because it makes the song accessible to all the kiddies who have no clue what joy division is.

I did some more reading...the name "stiff kittens" was one of the first names the band that eventually became Joy Division performed under. Which takes me out of the meta level interpretation altogether and gives an entirely different set of dimensions to the song.

So this is where it gets complicated...and for myself I've settled on this as the more specific interpretation....the reincarnation of the band joy division itself as new order, and even the previously unheard music by Ian Curtis initially presented after his death by new order...and one could take it even further and speak of the influence of these bands on later bands and their music revived and alluded to in the music of later bands...even blaqk if you think about it.....so references to "forever" become references to Curtis as musician, artist, lover...whose potential is lost because he is gone...but not really gone forever for all the reasons mentioned earlier. "If you show me heaven, I will meet you there"..an invitation for Curtis to show heaven to the singer, and for us to meet Curtis there someday.

Of course, Curtis himself always refused to interpret his own lyrics - he indicated they were multidimensional and subject to multiple interpretations. So if this song is in some way linked to joy division, then I feel pretty safe offering multiple interpretations and not feeling bad if they are all wrong...

Blaqk Audio – Snuff On Digital Lyrics 18 years ago
"What Snuff on Digital means is anyone's guess".

Here's our take on what it means, but I need to be careful to clarify where I say "film" I should say "digital recording" since Blaqk Audio went to such trouble to clarify it is a "digital snuff" rather than a "snuff film".....

Sounds to me like his suicide is being caught on film, either strapped to him, or mounted elsewhere as he falls. sounds like a relationship gone bad...the other person isn't actually there, but the speaker feels like the other person is slowly killing them from a distance ("...I still can't see as you bind me, murder me from miles away; I will finish this today for you").
...so he decides he'll finish the job by throwing himself off a building at night. But he wants to be sure the other person sees his death ("I'll chase the digital eyes below me; Through them you'll see as I fall; With digital omniscient eyes; Capturing me one last time for you; Tomorrow you will see.")

The impression I get is that he would say he wants to show the other person that he's finished their slow murder of him - but he is probably also hoping the other person will see the suicide "tomorrow" and internalize some serious pain, guilt and trauma that will slowly eat away at them - the same way he feels the other person has done to him (Descending quickly with hopes of sharing; All the things you've shared with me")
