Those of you who think the song is about rape seem to be ignoring everything that comes after the first few lines... lines like "When she's breaking his heart, she still fucks like a tease" indicate consent. I mean, it would have to be some sort of over-romanticized, bizarro rape song, and I really don't think it is because that would be just really weird. |

I don't hear the line "We built a life of work." I could be way off, but I hear "We built another world"... which I though was a connection to other songs on the album... not sure. |

The more I listen to this song (and I basically listen to it on repeat) the more amazing I think it is. It might be perfect.
The line "kissing the beehive"--- I think it refers to someone doing something they know will end up hurting them. Maybe they get something good out of it at first, ie: honey from the beehive, but they should know that it'll sting. A lot of the rest of the song seems to me like non-sequitors, but the line about the captain never being denied could be political. Actually I have no idea what this song is about. |

The "I'm in love with your daughter, I wanna have her baby" part has always seemed to me like a statement about something completely impossible. I mean, it sounds like someone asking for something impossible, and then adding "Please" at the end as if that will help.
This is a brilliant song... I do think it's more straightforward than some of the other interpretations. It sounds to me like someone asking to be left alone because they're trying to move on and can't handle whoever it is in their life. |

The line "People's children die and they don't even cry forever" actually strikes me as kind of funny. It's just so... abrupt. And completely un-romanticized. |

God this song is gorgeous. It actually makes me cry (and songs don't usually do that). She is really good, though, at diffusing a depressing situation by snoring in the middle of the song. |

This is a cover of a French song by Jaques Brel. Sort of. I mean, she definitely took it in a very different direction than the many other people who've covered the song. And it's really beatiful when she does it. |

I think the line about Andersen is about the belief that a proper education (and maybe "a thousand books", like rehabilitation) and normal childhood with normal kid's stories could make a person good... like maybe the prisoners could have been saved from a life of crime if they'd been educated. |

| The New Pornographers – When I Was a Baby (The Donner Party cover) Lyrics

For some reason, I think this song's about the foster care system. Like when she was at baby she was mistreated by her mother ("My mother would poke at the hole at the back of my head where my brain was exposed"), but those were still her best childhood memories, because then she talks about falling into hell and having the devil as her new caretaker. The funny thing is that the devil caretaker "rocks her to sleep" and sings songs, but she still feels like she's in hell.
The next part is a rehash of the foster care thing, I think... she was neglected by her original caretaker, and then she was taken away and put in a "circus for trinkets and beads", which I think might mean foster care for unwanted children. She can't be free from it, and for whatever reason she doesn't like it (maybe it's sort of wild or an usual, being described as a "circus") so she remembers her mother's problems happily. That's what I got out of it anyway. |

I can't believe no one's commented on this song! It's absolutely gorgeous. I listen to it on repeat.
From what I can tell, it's kind of dark. I tend to take things a bit literally... like maybe the character she's singing about actually set fire to a house, or the person she's supposed to have saved did, or at any rate there was a fire... some of it sort of sounds like going crazy with guilt over something. |

I'm pretty sure it's "Ring to forgive" instead of "drink"---that would make more sense, too, because you'd ring/knock on the door.
It's an amazing song. I listen to it all the time. Sounds very upbeat and still sort of sad. |
