| Belle & Sebastian – I'm Waking Up to Us Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| I think it's supposed to be hyperbolic and therefore cathartic. | |

| neutral milk hotel is experimental and sometimes brilliant, but they don't consistently convey this same emotional depth. of course art is part the viewer/listener's experience. didn't jeff tweedy write a song about this? I can't remember the name... | |

I think he realized the urgency all along, but felt helpless to do anything. on some level he understands his friend's despair. I think there is a jump back in time after the bridge. "later on as I walked home" refers to later in the day, right after their beach excursion. |

| sm means that he just cannot find the energy to care. he feels guilty for being selfish, and for not having been there for his friend. ex: "soberly, without regret, I make another sandwich and I fill my face...." | |

"not going anywhere" refers to a sense of being stuck, ineffective, not being able to move forward. a loss of hope... he is giving up. "everythings going high" = his world is going to pieces. you are far too literal. |

my favorite song about suicide. sm had a friend with ME who never got better and eventually killed himself. its also a song about heightened sensitivity and alienation. interesting that he seems to understand and accept his friend's choice. although maybe this song was a way to come to terms with that. |

| Belle & Sebastian – The Loneliness of a Middle Distance Runner Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| this is an impressionistic day-in-the-life type story. y'all are overthinking it. | |

| you're thinking about it too much. sm doesn't care about america. he just doesn't like business men. | |
| Belle & Sebastian – Dirty Dream Number Two Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| To be sure I have had a very conservative upbringing. I am not sure that women experience what is being described. But I am not all women. I've been thinking about this song ever since I first heard it in 2007 or so, and I still can't find that common experience. And yet I think it is a fabulous song and one of my very favorites. | |

Yes I get so sick of the stupid love songs pumped out by the pop music industry. Stuart M's lyrics are a breath fresh air. But then he was influenced by all those fantastic 80s alt bands, Creation Records and the like. And they have interesting lyrics as well. |

Or perhaps a young man who is very old inside. There is no comparison between Morrissey and Lawrence. Morrissey is talented. Lawrence is genius. |

Yeah, essentially the expert review quoted above confirms discoblows' opinion that this is a pretty shallow, pop-influenced song. clue-phrases: "amusing fantasy" "simple verse melodies" "shoutalong chorus" "ticklish piano riffs" "a favorite on classic rock radio today" |

| The Jesus and Mary Chain – The Hardest Walk Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I thought the lyrics were fine. I feel like Jesus and Mary Chain lyrics tend to describe a particular mood versus being accurate. I love it, actually. As TAMJAM pointed out, the lyrics kind of are in the same mindframe as the noisy guitars. I don't think it was necessarily about a breakup, but definitely about falling out of love with someone. "The thing swims in blood and it's cold stoney dead" I thought that that was about an abortion for an unwanted pregnancy. Which may have triggered the distance between the two of them. Although that could be taking a bit of a leap. |

This song is completely brilliant, as is the rest of their Strangled Orchards album. I'll try to put a few more of theirs up here. :) Thanks for posting this. in my version, it sounds like "diesel oil and beer". I'm notoriously bad at understanding lyrics, though. |

| Soft Boys – Underwater Moonlight Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I dunno, the songs are pretty straightforward. The lyrics are literate, but they're not difficult to understand. I'm trying to get my friends to listen to them, but I'm not getting any converts. For all that they sound like the frickin' Beatles and REM... :( |

| pastels – Nothing To Be Done Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Love this song. I think the meaning is pretty obvious. The male singer is holding something up inside of him from his past which is preventing him from having a relationship with the female singer. The male singer is more sentimental while the female singer is more matter-of-fact. Wish the Pastels would rerelease Sittin' Pretty... I would buy it in a jiffy! It's going for mucho-bucks on ebay and the like. Up for a Bit is equally hard to find! I need to return my borrowed vinyls. :( |

Do normal people relate to this stuff? I'm pretty much the only person I know who is this obsessed with b&s's back catalogue. Everyone else I know who likes them just knows Dear Catastrophe Waitress and Life Pursuit, which is not quite the same. I always feel like SM is being very clear and direct, although he tends to use general terms. Also, he doesn't take any shortcuts lyrically, there are no easy rhymes, which seems more sincere. |

I never know what to do with the nasty side of b&s. Actually, the better term would be swedish's "filthy". However, I love this song. I just wish it didn't make me seem perverted or anything. |
