A Perfect Circle – Blue Lyrics 17 years ago
oops forgot the second part.

We could also look at this interpretation in terms of Drugs and drug addiction, (as the whole album is based around the general concept of the 13 step program). He, like i said, does not realize he is murdering a person, maybe, perhaps because he is under the influence of something like LSD, or other types of drugs. He then might realize in his subconscious that he did in fact murder a person, but he chooses to deny it , "I didn't want to know"

I don't know, thats just my interpretation.

A Perfect Circle – Blue Lyrics 17 years ago
Ok well as its been said before, these lyrics make me think of the narrator just standing and watching someone drown and/or suffocate, with an almost child-like innocence. We could even go as far as saying that the narrator is killing this person. The narrator doesn't realize the implications of what he is doing, as he is just observing that blue is a nice color for them. The person dying is gasping for air, shaking their head, but the narrator "mistook their nods for an approval." But for the longest time, i could have sworn the lyrics were "Calling out to me, shes turning blue." (in the song, i thought it was pronounced Callin' out to meh), which makes sense if you think of the song in this context. But apparently I was wrong...so im not quite sure where to go with that.

Dredg – Same Ol' Road Lyrics 17 years ago
This song reminds me of a book i recently read called Candide, by Voltaire. (i recommend it, its pretty damn funny). Quick Synopsis: Guy named Candide falls in love with a girl named Cunegonde when they are young but they get separated and the whole book is about trying to find her again. In the end, he finally finds her but now she is hideously ugly. The whole book is a lesson in modesty. The moral of the story is that we should live modestly and simply and keep to ourselves, "tending our own gardens." Thats what i think the message of this song is. It seems in the beginning, there is an ordeal that the narrator has just gotten through but its starting again. He then realizes that he must keep going on, as he can't give in. Then the bridge is the big revelation. He can avoid all this turmoil by living modestly and simply, and take pleasure in others company and how beautiful the Earth can be.

Holy Crap i did the same thing as fishfrog.....Why doesnt it show the replies normally?
but anyway,
I tend to agree with the abortion idea. I mean, i dont think every song that FTM writes has to have to millitary/political connoctation. This idea actually explains quite a few things about the song to me, one being the title. In my opinion, going along with the abortion idea, the tile is the the name of the girl involved, and this event/decision has caused her much greif making her cry. Colonge is representitive of attraction, sexual or otherwise, as it is something you put on to make people more attracted to you. The reason she got into this mess is beause she was young and beautiful, and seeing a beautiful girl sad or distressed, men automatically want to help her, which could lead to a relationship and start the whole thing over again. It would probably make more sense if the song was "Kyla Cries Perfume" but Darroh probably kept the word Cologne for the alliteration.
Another line that jumps out at me when you look at the song this way is "Planting the seeds you sew is easier than growing the row." That's quite a powerful metaphor. He's saying having a one night stand is much, much easier than actually staying with the person and becoming the father to their children.
I might do a line by line interpritation later, but i dont feel like it now, as AuntieEm&UncleSam explained it pretty well.

Fair to Midland – An Honest Conman Lyrics 17 years ago
Man...this song is amazing.

The meaning, as for all FTM songs, I'm not too sure about. When i read the lyrics i get a kind of revolutionary vibe against business, or capitalism in general with the "What did you expect from us?" line (Kind of like Dance of the Manatee). Ill take a crack at an interpretation.

"It's highway robbery, and ill have my receipts"
I think that Darroh is talking about modern corporate society. They are taking everything from the people and all the people get are their receipts for paying their money.

"The skeletons i meet say their lay on their backs just to pave our way, right back to the starting gate."
The skeletons, perhaps, are people who think or pretend they are making a difference, and they "sacrifice" themselves, (lay on their backs), but all they are really doing is leading us back to the beginning. They are skeletons because you can see right through them.

"They run circles around the king without a crown"
The king without a crown would probably be the CEOs of corporations such as Exon, etc. Im not sure, but by running circles around them, it means that they keep skirting about the probably and never really get to the "king", or it could just mean they outwit him...idk.

"The speechless make a sound and start spreading their love with a Boxing Glove"
In times of crisis, everyone seems to choose a side. There is no middle ground, so people who normally wouldnt say anything start to speak up. "Spreading their love with a boxing glove" is a great line. I see it as meaning people with good ideas feel the need to force it on others, such as Religious Beliefs, or music, (also, a side note: On the inside of the Fables case it says "All songs published by Spreading Love with a Boxing Glove"....i found that funny).

"What did you expect from us?"
Why did they think the people would not rise up when they are being oppressed?

"Believe it! Believe it! Believe it! Lets let you carry the weight of a drifter, we doubt you've attempted"
This line was taken from a demo version of "Granny Niblo"....perhaps the songs meaning's are connected. But i think the line is telling the big-wigs to realize that this is actually happening, people are actually standing up for themselves, and they ask the big-wigs to "carry the weight of a drifter" meaning take on the personal "weight", or essentially take care of somebody who is useless in a Capitalistic society, but the people doubt they have tried that.

"Believe it! Believe it! Believe it! And push your luck if it makes you a promise, That turns con men honest."
I think Darroh is saying that the big-wigs should only take a gamble in business if it actually has the possibility of benefiting someone, when, for the most part, a gamble in business usually only benefits themselves.

"The lap of luxury is not a mercy seat"
Being extremely well of does not garner you mercy; you cant be a victim of luxury.

"The skeletons I meet say they lay on their backs just to lead the way,
Right into the everglades."
Im not really sure what this line means. I assume he is talking about the skeletons that he was talking about in the first verse, but i dont know what significance the everglades have...Maybe he means the everglades as in the wild, as in the "corporate jungle"

"They thank their lucky stars,And lose them in the cards."
They thank whoever they thank for their success in business but then they just throw it all away by gambling, (like the Stock Market)

"Cowards are in charge and their painting their trust with a coat of rust, What did you expect from us?"
The "cowards" in question would be the same people as "the kings without a crown", and they try to gloss over their sense of caring and understanding for the people they're hurting, but that gloss is already rusted.

(chorus)

"And these days, you're raking it in but forget, That regret, is counting the cards in your hand."
They're making all the money they want, but fail to realize all the people they're stepping on, and those people aren't going to let it go, as they are "counting his cards"

"And these days, they probably have to ask themselves, What did you expect from us?"
Again, they have to ask themselves why they did not see it coming.

(chorus)

Im not sure if i explained it clearly in my interpretation, (its 1AM and im tired) but i basically see it as people breaking free of their chains of capitalism and rising up, and the Big-Wig's reaction to this. A very Marxist song...heh

Nickelback – Hold Out Your Hand Lyrics 17 years ago
this is what makes me sad....
"The State" and "Curb", while sounding kind of similar to what was out there then, showed some great potential for Nickelback. These are very thoughtful and deep lyrics, and the song isnt that too bad musically. But....from Silver Side up and on, they've decided to write songs about love (which gets boring), sex and shit they probably dont care about , (If Everyone Cared). *sigh*..... I guess they want to appeal to a less intelligent audience...as there are more of them.

Fair to Midland – upgrade^brigade Lyrics 17 years ago
Ok, i think I've finally put a semblance of a theory together. Again, i think this has to do with the natural vs the man-made. but i take back what i said about it being from two different points of view. I think darroh takes the side of nature.

"Glow, but don't shine"
While this line could be interpreted many different ways, i think it is referring to technological advancement. Darroh is saying not to go over-board with scientific advancement, as the line between what is right and wrong, moral and immoral is blurring with things like cloning and designer drugs.

"A fuse for a blue-print, devices my hands built"
This is talking about how people give resources and money towards theories and plans (in this case, i think he means fuse in the sense of a countdown), and all these things are man-made and have no element of nature in them.

"For these roads want the rain in my raincoat, drown in a flash flood"
I think by roads he means society and modern technology, as they are building roads to everywhere on the globe. And these "roads" want everything form him, (the rain from his raincoat), so he'll give them what they ask for, and more, (and drown them in a flash flood).

"For we are alive"
Here Darroh brings in the human element. He says that we can fight this; that we are not robots. We are alive. (also, i love how in live shows he makes the crowd proclaim that they are alive)

"Give, given air. Not used to alfresco"
He wants to give all these people trapped by technology "air", as in nature. But they are not used to it. (Alfresco means outside)

"Does the sun know?"
As many other people think, i also surmise that this is a play on the word sun and son. He is asking if nature knows that all this is going on around them. The sun is basically the center of nature. Without it, there probably would be no living organisms on this planet, and people usually think that nature opposes science. Also, he probably is referring to Jesus as the "son", but he is not singling out Christianity. He is just using Jesus as the figure-head of religion in general, because religion also usually opposes Science (case in point- Creationists).

"Today, I forgot the zeros and ones, I told you to conquer the rush"
He says that today, he forgot all the things that society tells him to use, such as cell-phones and computers, and realized he is human. Not sure what "told you to conquer the rush" means though.

"Sunday, i remembered paper beats rock. Reached a mile high if i reached a foot"
I think here, he is just restating that he realizes that he is "alive" or a human, but using religion as an example, as Sunday is the day of rest. "Reached a mile high if i reached a foot" means that, while this is a small achievement, it goes a long way in a world like today's.

"Leopard skin is not above or beyond, no more a prince then a frog is."
This may sound silly, but i think leopard skin is being used to represent the artificial here. You always see leopard skinned rugs, or leopard skinned hats, and its become artificial and man-made. So Darroh is saying that the artificial is not better then nature, and we should not treat it as such.

"For these roads should not have shed for a witness, taken bites to avenge us"
Im not entirely sure, but i think he is saying that the "roads" should not have something else that is artificial as proof, (im not sure how artificial sheds are, but yeah, ill just roll with it). And perhaps, nature is taking it's revenge, here shown by the leopards biting back for making their skin something it's not; a decoration.

(chorus)

I'm going to add in the line that they use in some live versions, because i think it further backs up my theory.

"Here is the picture you asked for it, here is the equation it's matched, I'll have nothing to do with it"
Here he shows his disdain for modern technology. He shows that he's been used, and they made him do something he didn't want to. And he gives it to them, but not without scorn, and he says he wants no part of it.

"I'm figuring out, the one thing he's not, is above and beyond"
He is realizing that technology and science is not infallible, and it can be wrong.

"And no one's packing up, taking off, or waving good-bye. For we are alive."
And Darroh says that at least humanity hasn't accepted it full, and said good-bye to nature, because we are "alive."

(chorus)

Fair to Midland – With This Easel Lyrics 17 years ago
Actually, after thinking about it, i think that it's about how America, or just society in general, is obsessed with beauty, with a kind of romance theme thrown in there.

"And there we go instead, a tease that mocks the beggar"
I'm not to sure about this line, (i know, not a good way to start off), but, by beggar, darroh could mean himself, or the average joe looking for a relationship, and the tease is all the girls that have looks, but nothing else.

"It looks so flawless"
Again, he's talking about all the girls with perfect looks, but no substance.

"I've seen them bat their eyes and come a dime a dozen"
He's saying how all of them just use sex appeal to get attention from men, and that there are many women who do that, aka "come a dime a dozen"

"Just take two steps back"
Darroh could be asking the listener, or the people who do this, but regardless, he's telling us to take a step back and look at all this happening.

"Hold me. No not you but the other, the one with the rags on."
He's saying that he wants more in a relationship then just good looks, he wants substance. "the one with the rags on" is probably stands for the girls who dont follow all this bullshit, and just be themselves and get looked down upon by the ones that do. They're portrayed as someone with rags on because the shallow, superficial girls see them as ugly.

"Hold me. Substitute rain with some poison and drink to the sequel."
This possibly could mean that he sees no end in sight for all of this, and wishes he could live in a different time where all this didn't matter, (the sequel), so he drinks the poison and dies, hoping he'll come back to something better. (im sure darroh isnt suicidal, its just a metaphor)

"Torching, Torching"
He just wants to burn it all down and start anew.

The second verse seems a little different then the first. Darroh has seemed to switch to a more personal experience then just society in general.

"You seem withdrawn and plushed until you talk with others"
He's talking about how the girl(s) seem quiet and soft until he gets to know them, and realizes that they're infact strong individuals.

"Wish I'd been gift wrapped"
I think he wishes that he were better looking, perhaps falling into that cycle himself, in order for her to pay more attention to him, or maybe he just wishes he had more confidence to approach them

"Just hope to catch a gaze and just because it's chipping, doesn't mean its useless."
These two lines, im not sure to sure about. When he says "just hope to catch a gaze", i don't know if he's talking about the non-superficial girls, or just women in general. I don't know how darroh was with women, or how much self-pity he had when he wrote this so idk....
"Just because it's chipping doesn't mean it's useless" is again, i think, referring to himself. He doesn't know why he cant understand why he cant seem to get anywhere with women. He says just because he's not perfect doesn't mean he should be totally ignored. But still, darroh doesnt seem like the kind of person who would sit around loathing himself, so maybe this line could be referring to the girls who aren't perfect. I don't know. Those are a couple of confusing lines.

The bridge, i think, is one big metaphor referring to beauty.

"Some how i reduced"
He was able to stop judging people how just how they looked, and started to look deeper.

"And the surgeon told me it's no good"
I think the surgeon is supposed to represent society, or the media, telling him that he's wrong, that isnt how it's supposed to be. You are supposed to look good to get attention.

"You'll have to double your intake, and the risk?
I think that the intake he is supposed doubling is ignorance. The "surgeon" wants him to be shallower, and just judge based on looks." But then darroh questions that. he asks about the consequences. But then the "surgeon" replies:

"Hearts are made for cigarettes"
Here i think darroh is equating a real surgeon saying this, to the fact that society and the media says that shallowness, ignorance, and being superficial are all ok. It is, infact, supposed to be that way

"Little girls love to light up."
And here, darroh is saying how the cycle continues. Little girls feed off of all this bullshit coming from the media, and feel that they need to be beautiful, and if they're not, there is something wrong with them.

Overall, a very poetic portrayal of this cycle. I love how darroh uses cigarettes as a metaphor for being beautiful. Amazing.

I present to you the only FTM song ever to say Fuck!!!! As for its meaning, it remains an enigma to me. They're pretty complicated lyrics. It doesnt really sound like Darroh is saying all of that in the song, but he used a lot of layered vocals in the song, so maybe he's saying it somewhere in the backround.

I see how this could be interpreted as being about jesus, but what leads me away from that conclusion is the lyrics of the version they were playing before Darroh re-tooled everything for the release of IFS. It has lots of talk about science and machines. Unless, of course, the meaning changed when he re-wrote it, which is entirely possible. Who knows?

I'm not sure if this has been said, but the line "There's no love in fear" is deeper then most take it to be. It's been scientifically proven that emotions emit waves. I wont go too in-depth here, but, in short, there are only two main emotions: love and fear. All other emotions branch from those two. Fear emits a long, slow wave with a long wavelength, and love emits a short, fast wave with a short wavelength
Just thought I'd throw that in there.

audiotrance- i couldn't agree more. You were spot on in my opinion. Also an interesting note; you said that it reminded you of classical sirens. Well when i hear the song, i think of the story of Odysseus, who was a great sailor in "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey" . He told his men to tie him to the mast, (in a knot, if you will), so that he could hear the siren's songs. When he heard them, they brought him into a trance, and crazed him. They tied him in a metaphorical "knot" with their sounds. Looks like Darroh is making allusions to classical Geek poetry ;)

Yeah, i agree that it is about the atom bomb being dropped on Japan. There is more evidence in the lyrics of a demo version of the song. In that version, instead of "no one was waiting to throw out the pilot, Darroh says "no one was eating and barely surviving." There's another line where he says "mixing the coral skies, igniting the 9-5, streets here are not alive." I think that's pretty conclusive evidence that it is about the atom bomb. When the bomb was dropped, everyone was working, or heading to work, so they "ignited the 9-5" One more line from that song is "searching the scattered sticks, all handshakes and loving it. Whats a captain without his ship." Meaning, people were searching though the rubble, while the Japanese emperor surrendered aka" all handshakes and loving it"
"Whats a Capitan without his ship" means that he really had no choice to surrender because his enemies were just going to keep dropping bombs, and whats the point of being the emperor when there's no country left to rule.

Fair to Midland – Stiffback Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is about a dying WWII veteran. In the first part, he is saying how he will miss the world, and wonder what things will happen after he is gone. the "Stay on your feet in your hole" could refer to a foxhole or a grave.
In the first chorus, Mr. Four Eyes is the veteran,( he is old and needs glasses). The speaker (family? old war buddy?) is saying that he/she still loves and/or cares for him. The Young blonde haired stranger could maybe be a german soldier, because the whole Aryan race thing. The narrator is saying how their differences make them closer.
The next part, i think, gives away that it is about WWII. the"dark on the holidays" refers to the fact that the war did not end by Christmas, as most people thought it would. "Morphine blurts out little chunks" means its very cold, so maybe this is int he Arden Forest. People dont want to know if your freezing to death, they just want you to do your job and fight. "One nap and then.." means if you nap, you will probably die of the cold.
In the next chorus, it refers to the man as Mr. Veteran. The speaker is saying how it tried to save his life, (maybe old war friend?) Honestly, i dont know what the "Mrs. Undone" part means.
"Salts deprived from the eyes", could possibly mean that the speaker has cried all he could (salty tears), and without "patience and a foothold to grip", he'll be the next in line to die. He has a rope, (he can kill himself if he wants to). This next part I'm a little shakey on. "If its burning while im rising" could mean that if something exploded and killed him (rising as in going to heaven), it could only be the second best way to die.
The last verse is basically about the narrator saying he thinks he heard the dead mans voice, but he tells himself its nothing. The carry on part is what he thinks he heard the dead man say.
My theory is definitely shaky in some parts, but i think that WWII is the basic gist of the song. But who knows...FTM songs can be interpreted in many ways and i could be way off base. :D

i really wish people wouldn't just comment on a song to say its good. It isn't called Songmeanings.net for nothing.
That being said, i think this song is about a husband who cheats on his wife, or vice versa. It seems like a little perfect home, (with a white picket fence) and neighborhood, but inside, things are bad, (padlocks and a bastard child). The husband, or wife, is waiting for the other to return home, but he/she does not, (and so i wait).

I always thought of this as natural vs. synthetic.
Paper=synthetic and rock= natural.
He forgot the zeros and one's, as in siding with the natural, then on Sunday, the day of rest...he remembered paper beats rock, or synthetic is better... and the argument goes back and forth the whole song.
Zero's and ones are used in digital imaging which would make sense in the line "Here is the (digital)picture you asked for here is the equation that matched(zeros and ones), I'll have nothing to do with it." That line is only in the live version though
He also makes several references to life which is natural. Thats just my opinion and its not concrete but I think that the general idea of the song has something to do technological advancement over taking the natural things in life.
