| Bob Dylan – One More Cup of Coffee (Valley Below) Lyrics

This man has a romantic liaison with a gypsy girl. It is probably the next morning and he is not welcome to stay, but wants to. My take on it is that her father plans to kill him and this will end him up in "the valley below," So, he is a condemned man wanting one last cup of coffee or perhaps that is a metaphor for one more sexual encounter with her before he leaves. I also think perhaps he is a soldier and must leave this gypsy mountain enclave where he doesn't really belong and return to the battle literally in the valley below. One last cup of coffee would delay the inevitable, possibly deadly return to combat. |

It's a song questioning the idea of settling down and getting married at a young age. This man wonders if that is the only choice in life. He appears indecisive, but may be the wiser one in the end. It may be speaking to more than just familial choices. |

I just watched and listened to a live rendition of TBOE on youtube from Seattle `77.

Jimmy sings a little bit, which is kind of funny. He doesn't sound that great, but it makes it more entertaining to watch him bouncing off Robert. You might think at the beginning, especially as a young concert goer in `77 not expecting a Mandolin, that the song/performacne wouldn't have much gravitas, but oh my goodness it does. The mandolin gains tempo in a way that builds tension and excitement. At the same time Robert singing slips in to howling and moaning that can send chills down your spine. The way he uses his voice as an instrument is pure genius. It has a primal quality. There were hundreds of rock bands following their lead, but they didn't fall in to the marketing trap of just cranking out the same sort of material they produced before. I never heard a song that sounded anything like this. I consider this a masterpiece or originality. To those who criticize LZ for stealing from delta bluesmen or whatever, give this a listen to by yourself in a dark room late preferably on a cold winter night.
I welcome comments on my comment.

As a boy our family would visit our cousins in Ohio every summer. My first experiences with Marijuana occurred in the upstairs of their bungalow while listening to Meddle. Echoes blew me away. They had no central air. So, we had loud fans blowing across the room; one on intake, the other on out. This enhanced the effect. Very interesting comments about the meanings of Echoes. I must admit. I hadn't thought about it that deeply at the time. |

A great song to listen to while on a long, night time car drive. The chanting from the choir in the one section sounds like that used in the move "The Exorcist." It's kind of scares me. I think Floyd is the only group whose music has managed to elate, sadden, scare, surprise, puzzle and inspire me. Hooray Pink Floyd. I just watched Gilmour's "Live at the Royal Albert Hall" dvd on a an hd wide screen tv. It doesn't have this song, but definitely check it out! |
