I'm not sure what it means to me, but it means a lot. Perhaps that there are worse things than being lonely.
It's a song questioning the idea of settling down and getting married at a young age. This man wonders if that is the only choice in life. He appears indecisive, but may be the wiser one in the end. It may be speaking to more than just familial choices.

Recorded in early Dec., 1965, in LA, during the sessions for the album "Aftermath," but did not make it onto the pressings of the either the UK or US editions of that album." It made it in the States, finally, on the catch-all album "Flowers," summer 1967, which was originally not released in the UK. Finally released in the UK on "Through The Past Darkly: Big Hits, Vol. 2," late summer 1969, though not onto the US pressings of that album. Made it onto the second "Hot Rocks" anthology, subtitled "Big Hits and Fazed Cookies," released in both the UK and the US in 1972. I first heard this in 1970, when I was 15 and the lyrics hit me right between the emotions. Is this what life had in store for me? Poor job choice, Marriage, Old age, Misery and Death? Or was it was veiled warning to today’s teens to sort their lives out while they’re young or life would sort them out mercilessly. 62 years on and yes! I did make some of those mistakes. But now, as a pensioner, my determination to make sure I had a retirement of relative comfort and security has come to fruition. The alternative is something I’m very conscious of.
