| Mariah Carey – There's Got To Be A Way Lyrics
| 16 years ago
|
|
I love this song. It's very deep and socially aware. The first verse talks about a homeless man, the second verse about the apartheid in South Africa, where segregation was still legal until 1994, while the song was written in 1990, and the third about general destitution (like the cliched "starving children in Africa" etc). It's telling us to take charge and try to help the world and improve things around us. It's true that some people don't care, probably too preoccupied with their opulence or their own petty suffering to notice others' worse situations, but those of us who do something will ultimately make the world a better place to live in. Interestingly, this theme of social awareness and such was also evident in Janet Jackson's 1914 Rhythm Nation album a year before, and Mariah Carey has similar new jack swing influences (esp. in "someday") like Janet's lead single off of that album. Great music, love the 90s. =) |

it's interesting how she says open YOUR heart to me, YOU hold the LOCK and I hold the KEY, because if she wants HIM to open his heart, then HE'S the lock, and SHE'S the key. so she sings it the other way. maybe she does this because she just wants to stay consistent with the sexual double meaning, since if it were the other way, it wouldn't make much sense. plus it rhymes better ;) |

I disagree...I think it's about her own life, and how everyone says that she should call it quits cuz she's old (which makes me angry whenever people say that about Tori). China refers to her early song. She smokes/drinks maybe, which would explain the "friendly little substance". 25, 35, hints toward 45 (her own age), so she's subtly hinting toward her growing age, and how the record companies suggest you not write music as you get old. Funny thing is, she wrote better music when 35 than 25, so age only makes her better, no matter how they discouraged her, and this album shows that she's still a fantastic artist. :D <3 tori amos <3 |

When he goes away, maybe she feels like he can't trust him or feels like he's hurting himself or herself. This suspicion destroys her love for him, because of fear of unfaithfulness. Then when they get together, they have to start over again because she feels like she's already broken up and that love is unable to be retrieved. so the devil is really her own doubts about the relationship. but when they make new love, it becomes strong again, full of vigor and freshness. just my two cents. |

I think it's talking about the fate of her song "girl" considering that it includes part of "girl"'s lyrics and that she refers to her songs as her babies, which may be why she makes an analogy from songwriting to giving birth "what's sacred in my jeans". What will become of her and the girl in the song "Girl" and both of them together, where is she in life, etc. |

| Theatre of Tragedy – A Hamlet For A Slothful Vassal Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
it seems like the man is too old for her (a dotard gaffer). the man (the grunter) calls the woman very bad things, including an undeserving person who's getting more than they deserve (a parched sot getting soothing ale, a hamlet for a slothful vassal). The lady says she isn't as evil as he says she is. the woman says she was happy at the beginning but now she leaves (the guy forces her out of his life and hopes she loses everything).
PS: It took me sooo long to decipher the old vocab and then realize the many metaphors they used in the lyrics. I wished normal people knew these words... |

| After Forever – Intrinsic Lyrics

Very philosophical song. I think it's talking about how people are inside their own reality and that people should search for the meaning of life and that "real life"'s not what's "real" and that people should get back to their feeling side and understand life as they take a step back. Whispers and a scream = small stuff we do in life and final death. Flying high, falling down = highs and lows of life. People are nobodies. Reality is what we perceive it to be. These songs (like Intrinsic, Zenith, and some Epica stuff like phantom agony) are trying to say "step back from science and religion and feel what's real". The question I ask is what IS real? And that's what the song asks too in a way. We will never reach the meaning of life but must strive for it. We don't know who we are or what anything is, as much as we want to assume. And I guess some would think there's nothing in between fantasy and reality. But I think there is. It's called the divine. Somehow, humans can't comprehend what the divine is though. "elusive link to consciousness". |

Mhmm, and also I think maybe the "finest men" relates to all of the person's creations in this world, be it writings or people or ideas or music. Why are some of the newer songs about somebody getting old and getting ready to die? Hmm, doesn't make sense. Again, maybe the lyricist is getting old. And this is the last song on the album, so it would be an interesting way to end their career. And so Anneke (who is the lead singer and wrote all the lyrics for this album) ended hers. |

Somebody's aging. Anyway, it's kind of like a mid-life crisis for the writer of the song, kind of like "we just stopped breathing" from souvenirs. It's like the person feels like his/her life is perfect but something's missing and they feel lost in this "alleged paradise". It's like you've lost your purpose in life and are thinking about your past purpose in life, which is no longer. Kind of nostalgic. Also, it has a feel like the person's waiting for their death but they don't know when it's gonna happen, even though they know it will happen. Very good song. |

| The Gathering – Analog Park Lyrics
|
|
I think it's about knowing everything in the world, even the world, and the meaning of life, and how you are waiting for it, because if you tried to look, you wouldn't be able to find it, because it's so elusive. Everybody else is either beautifully ignorant (children playing in the park) or the adults (too focused on what the strict rules say [the sign on the road]). This person is part of neither group and can't relate to others and gets frustrated at their ignorance, specifically the ignorant adults. The person then realizes that the reason for their distress is that the meaning of life, which could obviously not be there, needs to be searched for, even though it might not be there. You can't just sit and wait for it. So there's your typical extremely metaphorical and deep The Gathering song for you. |

I love this song too. Hmm, I think it's about how somebody has woken to the harsh reality. Life is pretty unclear and getting down and cold. but you want it to stay that way because you don't want to be shallow or null or betraying. Other people, as most others, are too shallow to question and try to see what is beneath the many layers of snow (hardships of life). That's why deep people get pissed off at the general population. Deep people are seen as cold people in some way or another. They make people think of their hardships and stuff they haven't dealt with. Another thing is that people destroy any happiness they have because of what they do as an afterproduct (the shadow). This can be taken as abusing your priviledges and then losing them. The shadow (your fate) is controlling you. So I totally relate to this awesome song. It rox! |

This kind of reminds me of people being killed in the Middle East because of stupid fights about what's theirs. There's a lot of "thou's" not usually in the lyrics, which is kind of like in the bible or holy books. There is a lot of arable land there, like near the fertile crescent, where all monotheism's scriptures and Jerusalem comes from. It's also about death and the "beauty disturbed" when good people die. There's many religious references though. Hymn, "atrocious roots" (killing for religion), and the avoidance of death by religions by avoiding sins, but "death's obligatory" and it's reality. Fear is something of religion, maybe the religions want to find their ancestral place. |

The love is deep inside, so the person seems really cold on the outside and consciously, but they unconsciously love but it's in a dream. There's everything outside, and yet they walk alone and dream everything, when everything is there for them, up for grabs. So it's a hell, because the feelings are never fully felt than if it were real, so it's a place to fear when one excessively dreams to get their desires fulfilled and not love anything on the outside. Love isn't bound to your heart. It flows everywhere. Humane is like giving freedom, when someone is killing themselves from lack of love and expression of their own. |

I just hate how people (including myself) expect others to understand them when they don't show who they really are! What stupid expectations! If we all dumped the false appearances, then life would be easier. Everybody is a universe, a dream, and everything in the world is a symbol and perception to an idea on the reality inside our hearts. I think a weak person needs to admit to their weaknesses and move on. That's strength. The person in the song isn't like that, and they are too preoccupied with fears. People need help with making choices sometimes. The only choice they have to make though is to be their own leader, and themselves. |

| After Forever – Lonely Lyrics

This is pretty self-explanatory. It's about loneliness. I think most lonely people have this happen to them. They first leave, then come back as a shell, then lie about who they are. It's like you can't get rid of the path of loneliness. But then again, it's not just the lonely people's path. Everyone's path revolves around themselves. We never change, though our surroundings and acquaintances will. There will be no ties to the world that are strong, and that's how it was meant to be. So lonely people should talk w/ other people but not forget that they have no permanent residence with those people. The people I reference are extremely few, though. |

There is definitely a release when she sings it. I agree that it's about middle-school crushes, but more like immature crushes. I think it's about political/religious leaders. They deceive and say they're the "good" against the previous and still reigning evil. This vicious cycle doesn't stop with their death. The history will be there and so will this horrible tactic that unrightful leaders use. They use misinformation and hiding the truth to keep people in the dark. But in the dark there's light... | Lacuna Coil – To Live Is To Hide Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
I love this song. I think it's that when everything seems fake and emotions (unconscious, not realized) overwhelm, you just want to hide, so you can be in your own peace. You can only define your feelings relatively, and don't know what they are. The person expects change to happen so that their feelings will change but their unconscious is clinging to the feelings. We have been demanded by society to stand strong and never give in to anything, so the person needs to hide their negative feelings and still find the meaning of life so they're whole and have a purpose in life. The outward person they are has made the inner person sad. All the lies the world gives, the person gives and hears, stop the person from feeling.
Life goes on too fast nowadays, people repress emotions, devotion to passions have to be sacrificed.Hiding emotions is stupid and only causes you to blow up. Even those who preach this don't listen to their advice. The unconscious controls much of us, we need to work with it and understand, not repress it and hate it. If everyone showed emotions, they wouldn't feel exposed. |
