I am on board with plenty of what omkarma said. The verses are cravings, the chorus is getting high, or indulging in whatever your addiction is. I think the ladder line has two meanings. A desire to get back up and keep using whatever you're using; also, a desire to be able to get back down, the good ol' "one last hit" mentality. Don't let this be the one too many. Maybe I'm stretching. |

| The Strokes – 12:51 Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Room on Fire is the arc of a relationship. In the first song, she breaks up with him and it crushes him. After breaking off contact with her altogether in the third song, 12:51 comes a little ways down the line. This is the beginning of them getting back together, with him saying he's older, more mature, and more relaxed. The rest of the songs on the album continue the story, with him realizing that he really doesn't like her all that much, and had just built her up in his mind and fell in love with the concept of her. | |

I agree with the last two comments. This sounds like another case of Claypool's ability to write a hook that's really fun to say, and repeated enough times to guarantee you'll be muttering it like a crazed hobo for a week after hearing it. Tommy the Cat, anyone? |
