The Herd – I Was Only 19 Lyrics 17 years ago
P.s. Didn't want to stereotype hip-hop bands just there ^^^^^ cos I am a lover of Aussie hip-hop lol.
But often you hear heaps of hip-hop artists sing about such themes like sex and drugs, etc.
Not that that's a bad thing, but yeah I'm impressed that The Herd have decided to do a cover of a song about war, not related to the sex/drug/alcohol/street-life theme.
Yeah powerful song =]

The Herd – I Was Only 19 Lyrics 17 years ago
Tears welled in my eyes at the part of the song that said Frank was going home in June.
My God... This song perfectly protrays the horrors of war.
The Herd are awesome, they've perfected this song as a cover and have shown they're a hip-hop band that don't just sing about the kind of stuff your average hip-hop band might sing about (eg. sex, drugs, alcohol, etc).
I think this song will speak out to a younger audience now that it's been reconstructed as a hip-hop song by a band many young people love.
This song has a powerful and important message.

Kisschasy – Anger Is The Brand New Thing Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree with deathcabforyou, the chorus seems to suggest that through his music he can escape a little and that his music kinda takes away all his worries cos it lets him express himself.
Also when he says "it's what I live for" in the first line of the chorus, and "so let it be, this is who I am" in the third line of the chorus, he's pretty clearly saying that music is his life and it sounds like he's telling people to leave him alone and not judge him cos his passion is music and it's just who he is.
The song seems to be pretty centered around identity. He establishes music as his identity and comments (perhaps) on the emo scene saying he used to think we were all the same, but adding "maybe we're not cut out for your scene."
The lines "there's nothing that I would love more/ than to be a part of your scene" in my opinion expresses a kind of naivity, the same kind of naivity many people possess when they want to be someone they're not.
It just reminds me of something I once read about so many people wanting to be someone else to blend in with the crowd, rather than stand out and be themselves.
The beauty of this song is that the singer realises this. So many people out there completely change who they are depending on the company they're around and it almost seems that they don't even realise it. Sometimes it's painful to witness, especially when you see someone change for the worst.
Anyway I started to go off on a bit of a tangent there...
This is an amazing song, Kisschasy is an awesome band!
Oh and LOL I totally didn't notice the part that goes "let's buy supershoes" right at the end, not until I read these comments and played the song loud at the end.
What on earth are supershoes anyway? Should I know what they are? Have I been living under a rock?

Well as others have said, it's about not being able to dance =P
But Kate can make up for it with ehr voice.
I love the tounge-in-cheek nature of this song...
To be able to poke fun at yourself is pretty down to earth, and she has a good sense of humour =D
Awesome song! Very catchy.
I love it!!

Kate Miller-Heidke – Caught In The Crowd Lyrics 17 years ago
It's obvious, she was popular and probably felt she couldn't help the guy because that might damage her social status at high school, making her the laughing stock of the other popular kids and the jocks who bullied the poor guy. It's highschool to a T.
But the guts Kate Miller-Heidke has to sing this song is simply admirable. To actually be able to think about her past and admit she did the wrong thing is truly noble.
It shows that whilst in highschool she was caught up in the crowd, she actually has a concience and feels regret. It's sad how many people out there never do feel regret or remorse for the way they chose to treat others in highschool.
This song is amazing. Kate's voice is intriging, beautiful, mesmerizing and unique.
I hope other people out there will appreiate her music and her pure talent as much as I do =D

Air Traffic – Shooting Star Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is an absolute masterpiece!
It's pretty self-explanatory if you actually think about the lyrics. They guy is facing the difficulty of choosing between two girls.
In the lines:...
"It's as if you've come along too soon
And I'm trying to fit you in but I can't seem to find the room"
...it suggests she has come too early in his life before he is able to sort out his current relationship, so thus it is very difficult for him, but she is "too good to lose" so he doesn't want to not choose her, but feelings for the other girl are evident just because it is obvious that he doesnt want to choose between the two.
However he says "and I can't refuse", so perhaps he has stronger feelings for this girl who has come into his life, his shooting star.
I think it is sooo awesome how he calls her "cutie" and "pretty" and how everythime he starts a sentence with "pretty" or cutie" it is like he is saying that part to her personally. Absolutely amazing and beautiful!!
Incase it wasnt already obvious, I LOVE this song!!!! =D

Switchfoot – Dare You To Move Lyrics 18 years ago
Oh or maybe "welcome to the planet" is really opening your eyes to reality... Rather than taking on a more literal meaning of a child being born and the family gathering watching it ("everyone's here"/"everyone's watching you now").
Either way the song deals with confusion caused by growth, change, insecurities and different meanings in life (not necessarily OF, but IN).
Lol I dunno... =]

Switchfoot – Dare You To Move Lyrics 18 years ago
I think the song is about life starting from the day you were born.
The whole "Welcome to the planet..." (etc) suggests this.

The line "I dare you to move" is suggesting if the child doesn't move then it might eventually not have to live life.

It is always unknown what will happen next in life, but the basic stages of life are growing up, changing, conflict and confusion.

Later into the song the lines "Welcome to the fallout/
Welcome to resistance/ The tension is here/ The tension is here" shows us the stage of being grown up and experiencing conflict (fallouts & resistance).

This in particular makes me think about teen life, rather than adult life, because when you're a teen you're discovering who you are really, and this can result in conflict and confusion, resistance (in other words stubbornness or disagreement) and fallout (or arguments).

"Maybe redemption has stories to tell
Maybe forgiveness is right where you fell
Where can you run to escape from yourself
Where you gonna go
Where you gonna go

Salvation is here......"

^^^These lines indicate some confusion. Maybe redemption (in Christianty: the act of delivering from sin or saving from evil) has stories to tell? This could mean in the future seeking redemption means you have your own stories to tell of it?

Or maybe forgiveness is right where you fell? (Could this mean the character regrets forgiving? That being weak in character caused him/her to forgive and thus he/she fell?

And then there's the question, where do you run to escape from yourself? We often just want to hide or be someone else, but teens don't even learn who they are until adulthood, it's called self-actualisation, being completely happy with yourself and knowing yourself wholely.

Then, the line "Salvation is here" basically tells us Jesus is here. That if we were to accept him into our lives that perhaps our worries, insecurities and all the rest (confusion about what to do/who we are, and conflict) might not be as severe.

For instance, if there was a kid confused about why he is here in life, maybe if he started beleiving in God he would begin to understand his purpose in life, and thus not be confused over that. He could have some kind of explanation based on beliefs.

Anyways I hope I'm not actually sounding like a Christian-endorsing looney who is trying to subtly tell you all to become Christian, nor do I think that of Switchfoot, but I do think the lyrics say to us that Jesus is here for us, that salvation is here (salvation ofcourse meaning being saved).

And If I'm not mistaken I'm pretty sure Switchfoot are definately a Christian rock band.

Anyways when I really thought about the lyrics of this song when listening to it, I could have cried, and I don't know why.
I guess just the depth of the lyrics have that power to make you feel something strong even if you're in a completely happy mood.

Anyways it's a completely stunning, beautiful, well written song with such a special meaning, maybe not to everyone, but I'm sure to many Christian people, or even just confused teens.

I think to anyone who listens who is willing to beleive that there COULD be a God, then the song is very reassuring when it tells us salvation is here, because even if we don't beleive in a God, should we ever choose to then we're reassured that salvation is here for us.

It's like saying "now honey I know you're vegetarian but should you, for any reason at all, need meat, there will always be some in the fridge, and it will always allow you to come to it".

Lol well anyways that little analogy just killed the mood, but I hope it gets the idea across =P

Beautiful song!! Love it!
(If anyone read all this I whole heartedly thank you, I think I've written a near-essay length piece here, but you can't say the song didn't deserve it, I just hope my view of the song isnt complely wrong, cos then I look like an idiot for writing so much lol!!).

thedukey - that makes a lot of sense actually, cos isn't Wally from Belgium or soemthing like that? And I'm guessing 'Wally' is probably just an Anglicised version of 'Wouter', the Flemish name, like you said.
Oh and nah I didn't see him live there, I saw him live at Festival of the Sun in Port Maquarie =P
He's playing at Byron Bay's East Coast Blues & Roots Festival!!!! I sooo gotta be there, and hopefully get him to sign my "Like Drawing Blood" album =D (and I'm lucky too, I only live like 15-20 mins north of Byron, fuck yeah!!).

Missy Higgins – Forgive Me Lyrics 18 years ago
I definately think it's about a man seeking forgiveness from his wife and family for his infidelity.

"Oh my God how you make it hard
Not to pick the apple
Pick the apple
And Lord I long to give it back"

This part of the song portrays the man's desire to undo what he did wrong, as he obviously regrets it and feels ashamed of himself.

He has either told his wife of his affair or she has found out, but either way he is dying for forgiveness, because now that his relationship is in jeopardy he suddenly realises just how important his wife is to him.
Evidence of this is shown in the line "And oh my wife you are my life".

And as they say, you learn from your mistakes. I think this mistake he has made has helped him learn how important his wife is to him.

The use of biblical references like "pick the apple" suggests the temtation he had, which he could not overcome.
The apple is a metaphor for the other woman he consorted with.

But, now that he realises his relationship may come to an end and he could possibly lose the most important person to him in his life, he expresses how he longs to give back the apple (which is a metaphor for undoing what he did - wishing he could rewind to the point where he decided to be unfaithful, and change that).

In the beginning of the song there is the sense that he is talking to his child ("Oh my son look at what I've done"). He wants forgiveness from his child.

Then comes the sense that he is talking to his wife ("And oh my wife you are my life"). He needs forgiveness from her too.

The line "And home, home's anywhere you are too" tells us that without them he will have no home, not in a literal sense exactly, but in a kind of emotional sense - they are his family and his home.

"So take this one fallen man on his knees
Saying please forgive me
Forgive me"

He has "fallen" in character I think, he knows what he did was wrong, but he begs for forgiveness in an effort to save his marriage.

I think the reason he cheated on his wife is explained here:
"And I was on shakey land
Lost and unsure I opened my hand
And she held it like sinking sand"

...to me is sounds like the "shaky land" is a metaphor for problems his marriage had, and he was "lost and unsure".
Perhaps he reached out to another woman because of this, and ultimately it led to his affair with her.

When he says she took his hand, this could be taken both literally and metaphorically. Perhaps the woman he had an affair with understood him, and perhaps at first her concern was like a friendly concern where a friend might often take the hand of another friend to show companionship, but perhaps the man and this woman had a once-off connection and one thing led to another.

Anyways she obviously wasn't meant for him, because after the affair he realises his one true love is his wife, and what he did to her was wrong, so he begs for her forgiveness to save his marriage, because the thought of losing her is unbearable.

This song is so sad, I can't help feeling disappointed in the man, but at least he knows what he did was wrong and asks for forgiveness - a true sign he wants to make amends with his wife because he is in love with her.

Beautiful, amazing, perfect song!

Bluejuice – vitriol Lyrics 18 years ago
I LOVE this song soooooo much!!!!! Bahahah first comment bitches! =P
Bluejuice are so awesome live!!

When I saw them at Festival of the Sun in Port Macquarie, they told the audience to throw anything at them as long as it wasn't sharp and pointy lol, and then Jake, one of the lead vocalists, climbed up on top of the metal frame thing that supports the lights n stuff, hahaha twas excellent!

Anyways I kinda get what this song is about but I dunno how to explain, but I reckon it puts forth a "we don't give a fuck cos this is the way we roll" attitude, and that's what's cool about it =]

Hmm anyways, the Oxford dictionary says Vitriol means:
1.Sulphuric acid or a sulphate, orig. one of glassy appearance.
2. Caustic or hostile speech, criticism or feeling.

Lol no doubt the song concerns the latter. I think it's just about being yourself & not caring what others think (maybe) lol but yeah I dunno.

Awesome song!

Gotye – Heart's a Mess Lyrics 18 years ago
"Pick apart
The pieces of your heart"

Those very first lines of the song tell us her heart is broken, shattered into tiny pieces.

She's suffered from a previous relationship, or maybe even suffered from several previous relationships, and now her "heart's a mess" but she "won't admit to it".

She builds herself a barrier by pretending she is ok, that she hasn't been hurt, as she won't admit her heart has been broken.
Wally wants to connect with her and open her heart to him, because he loves her and will not hurt her like her previous partners have, but she has been hurt so much that she has locked her heart and thrown away the key.

"You don’t get burned
(’Cause nothing gets through)
It makes it easier
(Easier on you)
But that much more difficult for me"

^^ She has "...lost too much love" and now she won't let it happen again so she has closed her heart, so that she won't her burned again. It makes every day a little bit easier on her part, but so much harder on Wally's because he wants to connect with her, but is finding it hard with her because of the barriers she has put up.

The song is about a heartbroken girl and a guy in love who just wants to connect with her, but beacuse she has been hurt so much, I guess she is thinking "how could I ever be sure i won't get hurt again?". I guess in this situation she should get to know him more as friends before anything else.

Lol yeh that's my two cents worth on the song. It's an amazing song, I can listen to it over and over and never get bored of it. I saw Gotye perform this one live and it was so good, I wish I could re-live that day! =]

Gotye – The Only Way Lyrics 18 years ago
It sounds like it could be about death, but it also sounds like it could be about the end of a relationship.
I don't think it has anything to do with suicide, however.

I think it's very much about change and loss. Maybe it can be open to interpretation.

I just think it's generally about a journey coming to an end due to some form of change, and it's hard for the person to accept the change, perhaps.

I could even relate this song to my journey of ending school soon, I think it will be hard to leave it behind, it will be "no easy ride" but it's "the only way" and I cannot dodge it.

However I think the song is either about a relationship ending (through divorce) or a nearing death, maybe of an elderly person or cancer victim, for example.

The line "Say goodbye (I don’t want to)" suggests the person is not ready to accept the change and let go.
The following line "Don’t you fight (I don’t want to)" seems to hint it might be about a relationship, rather than a death.
The line after that, "Leaving your life’s no easy ride", could be taken literally in the seanse that the song is about death, or taken metaphorically in the sense that the song is about a loss of relationship.

If the song is about a loss of a relationship, then you dont leave your life literally, you leave your lifestyle, it changes because you are no longer with your partner (and it might feel like you've left your life literally because of the emotional pain involved).

I also think, the line "Now all of the stars are aligned" has something to do with fate and destiny. Anyways I could go on for another half hour talking about this song, but I probably shouldn't. Don't listen to me anyhow lol, these are just my own opinions. Hope they were insightful to an extent. =]

Youth Group – Forever Young Lyrics 18 years ago
P.S. I totally agree with 'GibsonSheep', the lyrics are open to interpretation, and while the original (by Alphaville) was sung in the sense that it was about nuclear war, I personally beleive the cover version (by Youth Group, obviously) was sung in the sense that it was about youth, and the view of being young and youthful as something ideal.
I believe this because of the film clip. It shows a bunch of young people on skateboards, and (if I'm right) the footage was taken from Sydney, but don't listen to that I might be wrong and the location of where the film clip was made is irrelevant anyways.

Youth Group – Forever Young Lyrics 18 years ago
The OC did not fucking ruin it, k?
If you truely appreciate a song for its sound and lyrics, then nothing can ruin it.
God some of you people who think the OC "ruined" it are so lame...
If you can't handle the fact that a good show found a good band and a good song and broadcast it on their show to two beautiful people dancing near a sexeh pool house, then why are you weatching the OC, listening to the song, reading the lyrics of the song on this site, and making an effort to post a comment about it, complain to the OC if you're not happy, or express your disgust to Youth Group.
But don't use this site as a catalyst for expressing your angst, this site is about disgussing the meanings of songs and what underlying messages each song in the world holds, it is not here for lame gossip and hate-comments, or complaints either!

Guh you people are so cynical, can't you see the beauty in things? Or does everything look ugly and bad to you people?

And to the people who defended this song, The OC and the band, I salute you. =]
Cheerio. xx.

Gotye – Thanks For Your Time Lyrics 18 years ago
I saw Wally De Backer live, he was AMAZING!!

He told the audience, before he performed 'Thanks For Your Time', that the song is about being placed on hold in a queue (and it's obvious anyway).

He's poking fun at those inconsiderate companies that place you in a queue for ages, and Wally tastefully uses sarcasm to poke fun at them (eg. "But your call is valuable, it's very valuable").

Ofcourse this is the cliched thing those stupid robot-ladies tell you while you're on hold, and ofcourse the managers and staff of the companies don't actually think your call is valuable, so thus the sarcasm.

Wally also mimics something you'd expect a call centre employee to say, ie. "Don’t ask me, I just work here man". It's funny because it's their job to answer your questions, and yet they say "Don’t ask me, I just work here man".

This is one of the reason's Gotye is so awesome!! He sings about being placed in a queue and takes a subtle dig at those evil companies, hahah woot!

People out there, see him live it's worth it! Oh and while on topic about Gotye, does anyone know the meaning of the name? Why does Wally call himself Gotye?? I feel like an idiot for not knowing lol...

The Dresden Dolls – Coin-Operated Boy Lyrics 18 years ago
For anyone who takes this song totally literally, you're fucktards.... This song uses the 'coin-operated boy' as a metaphor obviously. I think the girl is alone and wishes relationships could be complication-free without all the negative emotions, that come equally with the good emotions, in ALL relationships.
If she had a boy just like the coin-operated boy, than things might be more simple, he could love her and be exactly what she wants, and she won't have to deal with any horrible emotions such as sadness and lonliness, because I think she's already suffered these emotions and doesn't want to go through them another time 'round.

The song ends beautifully with the lyrics
"with his pretty coin operated voice
saying that he loves me that hes thinking of me
straight and to the point
that is why i want
a coin operated boy".

This is all she wants, and the coin-operated boy is a metaphor for the real man she needs.
