I definitely agree with this. You don't have to be in a different class as someone else to think someone is too good for you. I think he's just admired her to the point where she's become this ethereal being. I feel like this song captures that moment when, regardless of how confident in yourself you are, you find out the person you're interested in likes you back and you go, "Me? Really? Why me?" It's that feeling of ecstasy and nervousness mixed together. It's the beginning of a relationship, and you're wondering how you became so lucky. |

I don't think the guy in the song is necessarily of a lower economic background, though it is possible. I think it's more of a social barrier. He likes this girl, but they come from different social groups. However, she's the real thing. She's one of those people who seems to have it all (First class and fancy free, She's high society, She's got the best of everything). He thinks she's perfect, too perfect for him, and thus he's placed her on this pedestol, comparing her to great women and a goddess. However, in reality, she isn't as "high above" him as he thinks she is. She does call to speak to him, and says something that seems urealistic to him. I think this song illustrates what's going on in his head right after she calls. He's in disbelief that his perfect girl has called him up to talk to him. The song gives a feeling such euphoria, that when he says nothing is going to happen, you know he's lying to himself. He just can't believe he's got the girl. |

I really like this song. It's about routing for the underdog. I think it's also saying it doesn't matter who you are, you're still going to have good days and bad days. Wealth, status, and success can't change that. |

I think this song is definitely written about what the guy feels after the end of a particular relationship, but I don't think it's necessarily a romantic relationship. I think the guy in this song was hurt and abandoned by someone he loved, be it a lover or a friend or a family member. But no matter what happened, the guy's still loves the other person. He's willing to look past what happened when the other person is ready to do the same (hence waiting for the other person to call out his name or let their eyes meet instead of doing it himself). He's willing to forgive the other person and hopefully renew the relationship (he says he's proud to know the other person and he says that he'd come running if the other person called). I think this song is about trusting and having faith in the other person in a relationship - that some day they will come back. I think it's very optimistic. I love this song. |

about the "Old man river
said you can just go your own way
if you just leave him alone" part.
i agree with qmfd that old man river probably stands for wisdom, but i don't think that the river asking to be left alone means that he doesn't want to be bothered for the answers. old man river has already given the ultimate answer: go your own way. a river is a set course. you can follow along the side of it or row up/down it, but you're always going to follow the same path. old man river says to leave him alone. set your own course, create your own path.
that's my take. i love this song - the whole thing. it's fantastic. dispatch is amazing. |

Well, let's see.... I'm going to go out on a limb here and say this song is about divorce...
I like the catchiness of the song despite the topic. As a product of divorced parents, I totally understand where the song is coming from. |

No comments? This song is one of my favorites. The meaning is pretty straightforward, or at least to me it is. He's saying that he'll love this girl and will always do anything for her no matter the circumstances. Cool song and The Black Keys have such a sweet style. |

I disagree with Possibly Sane about the meaning of the lines “And it’s been autumn since the day that I met you/If I hit bottom, must I crawl out alone?/And I don’t wish to know the secrets of summer at all.” Most people do compare love to summer, but think about what happens in autumn, also known as fall. Aha! I think he means that he fell for her when he met her. Then the next line makes sense. He’s wondering if she’ll leave him or stay with him during the troubled times. The part about summer I think could refer to summer flings, which are fleeting. He wants something far more permanent. Now, where does this fit in with being 21 and invincible? I think the fact that he’s willing to give it all up for her and he thinks she’ll do the same for him. His mom tells him not to waste his youth by getting married. He says he doesn’t care, he’ll screw it up because he’s got the power. |

First off, I think the beginning of this song is just plain hilarious. I don’t remember hearing it the first time I listened to it. In fact, it was probably the forth or fifth time before I really listened to the words.
Anyway, I think the meaning of this song is pretty straightforward. He’s still in love with this girl, presumably an ex-girlfriend, and the feeling isn’t going away. If anything it’s getting stronger – like an absence makes the heart grow fonder kind of thing. I like that he’s begging the moon and the stars. It reminds me of Starry Night and the optimism ad hope I find in that painting. Though despite the hope present in this song (because the guy obviously hopes she’ll come back), I find it extremely sad. I mean what sucks more than losing the one you love? Especially someone you feel so connected to. Them’s the breaks… |

I’m not so sure this song is about breaking up as much as it’s about just wanting to live, to enjoy life, and to set things right. I never saw it as pessimistic. I do think the guy is a bit desperate, but I don’t think his desperation is a bad thing. I agree with Jinxx that he’s trying to convey that life is meaningless without love—love for your partner, your family, life going on around you. I always saw the song as optimistic and full of hope. Maybe I just found it comforting that I could relate to it so easily and that’s where I found the optimism and hope. I don’t know, but this is my favorite song. I can’t ever feel completely down when I listen to it. |
