I see alot of theories about a guy that wants out of his relationship; I see a theory of a guy that is fed up with his girl having too much freedom. "The wait is over, I'm not taking over. You're no longer laughing, I'm not drowning fast enough". It sounds more like a fight than something peaceful. What gives the idea she's cheating is "He seemed impressed by the way you came in. Tell us a story; I know you're not boring". She's impressing a guy, and he doesn't like her doing it. This could also possibly mean that she's cheating, and he's attempting to show her the conseqeunces. Then, the "Yeah, the nights not over, you're not trying hard enough" is saying "The nights not over, you haven't tried hard enough to attract someone". Though, that could mean MANY things so.. The "You sound so sleepy. Take this, now leave me" Rings more on "Take this and leave me alone, I really have no care for how you end up afterwards". The STRANGEST part to my theory would be "Everytime I look at myself; I thought I told you, this world is not for you". It sounds more like a suicidal that can't seem to find the courage to kill himself. Anyways, I'm just adding to the theories here. Amazing song. I really do love it. |

I can sort of confirm Quay. In Asbury NJ, they said this line "This is about a girl who was in our studio one day when we recorded our first album". He didn't elaborate but it makes more sense now. This is my favorite song from them. It just sends chills up my spine, even without knowing the story. |

Yay, first time posting here. I lurked alot but.. I actually think the lyrics are missing a part. The background vocals after "It's on the sheets". I believe something along the lines of "But she won't let me" is said.. But I can't be sure. I know atleast it says "But she". But to me, it seems like it's trying to convey the message that he's been pushed to the edge of his self control. Something he loved doing, such as drugs maybe? But he was pushed to the point where he couldn't take it anymore. What would confused or even disprove this is "To play to something never there". Regardless, I still feel it's talking about someone who was pushed farther than they could take, a choice of SOME type that was a mistake that he did again, even knowing it was wrong. That's my comments anyways. I'm sure that someone has a much better, or even correct analisys..But I love the song. Awesome band. |
