I think it's about inability to find a connection with people to the point that it leads to a psychiatric treatment. He's got a problem, he can't resolve it completely on his own, but when he tries talking about it, people's reaction does not help. He thinks he cannot find empathy by talking his problem out, because people don't have his experiences. Maybe he's just framing his problem all wrong (just complaining) and the society is not able or feels responsible to help him out. They just laugh at him, and then pity him. He feels isolated. He knows there's a problem with him, and that makes him feel even worse. But still, silence resolves nothing. Silence is used as surrogate for lying, postponing. It's about selfdeepening angst. |

This song is obviously about submitting yourself to social obligations and norms imposed upon you by someone else. You do it and you start hating the world and yourself not knowing whose fault it is. You don't do it and you get a black ball, you get ostracised. There's no deep metaphorical meaning in this song, it's just an angsty punk rock song which describes the world as it is. It's my favourite Offspring song. |

The first verse is expression of belief, that life has a meaning, although it might not be fully obvious to us any time during our lives. It means, that the meaning of your life is greater than you. Religion is the main metaphor here, and it also serves as an introduction to the spiritual character of the song.
As was written, the chorus is about our drives in life, which make us restless and unsatisfied about ourselves, and motivate us to live, maybe too fast. We shouldn't compete for personal success during our lives, we play a greater common game here, which has only one side.
The second verse is about how we all want to achieve harmony, but fail to do so because of fear of loss of what we have (contrasts with the chorus - want for what we don't have). Instead we should accept that sometimes we win and things are good (major key) and sometime it's just bad (minor key). We shouldn't push harmony, we should open up to it and accept the world and ourselves for what they are. Chord and harmony are synonyms here. Music, again something very spiritual to many people, is the leading metaphor. |

this song is musically great, i like to play the bassline. and wrinkledPhole, i think you're all wrong, to me this song seems to be about drugs, though i don't understand all the puns, it seems to be about how you become and stay psychologically dependent on them, about what they give you and take from you, how you realize you maybe should give them away, but in the end take anyway and feel good about it. BTW there's an error in first chorus there should be philanthropist, not philanderer |
