i think the "playing for an audience of one" is refering to living only for yourself. I can't tell if its meant to be negative or just a simply stated fact. I like to think of it as a unbiased fact, because all our actions are motivated by selfishness. I love this song, its one of those just random songs, that is breathtakingly beautiful, almost in awe at how much you can relate. to me its definitely about putting a front up and keeping your pride, hence putting your chin up. the moment you are willing to keep your front up instead of facing reality is when you give up yourself up and start losing yourself "Back to when we started, losing who we were." i also like how its says "everybody knows" you think you're putting a good mask on, but everyone can really see through it, but your pride keeps you from taking it off. |

this song is really simple, love comes first in everything. i like how he takes a hit at how society pushes "sexy" at everyone, because sex sells. on a personal level for Bryce he had to see that God comes before fame. I've always thought of this song as explaining the lose of innocence, but not to a point where your willing to give up your dreams. the name "i can't see myself getting to sleep tonight" would obviously be a main theme, of being so sick of what he finds out that he can't even sleep. "I'm so sick of closing my eyes" is one of my favorite song lyrics of all time, its so true, he's like saying I'm tired of being ignorant, closing my eyes to the world, pretending that millions if atrocities don't occur every day. that i'll keep my eyes, i won't ignore this like everyone else does. almost as if he has a duty to stay awake, and not slip away from the reality of how life really is. he sings about growing up and learning you can't believe in everything you see, and that looking back he can see how ignorant he was. "And if the sunset's a mile ahead Maybe there we can just pretend" he repeatedly mentions "pretending" making me think despite being awakened he still wants to hang on to that innocence, that everything can still be as perfect as he used to think things were. He knows he can't but its a romantic idea for him that he might be able to. "But I've learned from all of my time spent You can't believe in the words that people said If I want something done I'll have to do it myself again" oh coming to realize that you really have no one in this world but yourself, yes other people might help you in this world, but only if they are helping themselves as well. Every single action is motivated by selfishness. I do not think of this as a love song whatsoever. |

i think the meaning of this song is pretty obvious, not really knowing anyone, just liking the "new" appeal, or so to say. I actually like the lyrics, even the Japanese exchange student reference. but he really screwed things at the end, with the whole "i love the Japanese etc, etc," I know he just added that at the end to be like, this isn't a hit at the Japanese at all, so there was no way anyone could take the song offensively, I personally don't think it was necessary at all, but it definitely butchered the song for me regardless. |

its "when the DEAF feel the sound" i'm not really sure what that specifically means, but thats the lyrics. definitely a christian meaning behind the song, he starts the song talking about all the faith he used to have, thus he had faith in his afterlife. but we all have those moments of doubt, and me personally, that moment, when your just like whoa i'm really gonna die one day, because sometimes, actually a lot of the time, death seems so surreal. this is for those moments when you feel that but your like that doesn't matter life goes on, you still live on, you still want something to live for, to fight for, personally i think Bryce is referring to god, that, that is what he wants to live for. because if he really had full faith in god, he'd have no fear in god. |

I think many of the songs on this album revolve around the idea of finding your worth in yourself, i.e. you gotta believe, let you go, and this song. "i'm sick of myself for letting you get to me, taking everything I'm suppose to believe" I have the lyric book, ^ this is legitimate :) personally for Bryce, I think this song is about him not wanting to have to give up making music the way he does, almost like he feels like his is on the verge of deciding between giving up music, or making it the way most musicians do in the industry to just make money. In a more general way I think this song is more about finding value in yourself, and in your work, that even if it means nothing to anyone else, if it means something to you, that is so much more than what anyone else could ever think, this song is sort of a fight, it's like he realizing that if he doesn't want "to give it up" it means something, just my take on this song. |

well obviously it is about someone in his past that he no longer sees in the same way. i love this song because i can relate, i see it more as a family member or friend person, not a ex. because a long to ago my parents are divorced, and my dad got a new girlfriend and for over a year he didn't even call or anything. then once they broke up he came back wanting to spend time and everything and this is how i feel. how that person will never be the same person in your eyes. and how part of you wants to take them back but you can't help it that after you've been treated like that you can't bring yourself to let them back in, almost in a self-preservation so you will never feel that pain again. to me it is clearing about forgiving, i can relate to this song on such a level. that feeling how you want to forgive but you just can't let it go. how you ask god to help. how when you don't forgive your basically stuck, and that not forgiving hurts yourself away. that feeling of not moving on cause because you just won't forgive. how it just eats away at you. bryce is just waiting, becuase thats all he can do to hope to forgive. because forgiveness takes time and he knows that "So, how can I skip the time I need To stop the remembering" he wants to get rid of the burden and just forgive so he can finally live. because when you don't forgive it is a burden that takes a toll on you. well now im just ranting, its just totally get this song. i think the best line of the song is "If I don't forgive it'll kill me" it is like the main theme of the song to move on you have to forgive. this is such a good song, musically it is not my favorite, but the lyrics are so good and so true, for anyone who has ever had trouble forgiving someone they must totally be able to understand this song. |
