Ke$ha – Tik Tok Lyrics 15 years ago
People that immature get signed because they'll sell. There's a huge market in the tween/teen market, kids with tons of money to spend on music. They don't care if she's immature; they are too. She displays the same complete idiocy they do, just adding some glamour, making her attractive to them. I'm so sad for this generation.

God Help the Girl – Musicians, Please Take Heed Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is gorgeous. It's so dramatic, the soft start, the sweeping strings, and huge climax! It definitely sounds like a Belle & Sebastian song.
And I absolutely adore the lyric "I pick the soundtrack with immaculate care. So much rests upon it, my life upon a song. You don't know how much I need... musician, please take heed." It's so true!
I really don't think this song needs an explanation.

Modest Mouse – Guilty Cocker Spaniels Lyrics 16 years ago
I take this song as a kind of social commentary.

"The truth had stopped and the skyline rose, exchanging comfort for more fashionable clothes. I'd left the hills at this point in time to run on treadmills in a perfect line" addresses the move from truth and nature to cities, trends, and technology. Instead of enjoying the beauty of nature, we destroy it and then run on treadmills like products in a factory, moving down the conveyor belt.

"And if this is fun, why am I so bored with it?" is about the disposability of our creations. We are constantly coming up with things that are newer and better, but it is never good enough. It's fun at first, but we soon get bored and look for the new best fun thing.

"Guilty cocker spaniels eating table scraps. Well we rolled over, how our masters clapped. It felt so good we wanted more than that." Conformity. We do what society wants us to do so we fit in.

"Didn't buy a face, no just a mask, so happy Halloween!" Seems like plastic surgery to me.

"I drew a blank, we put it in a frame" I kind of see this as a reference to pop culture. Modern pop acts like Miley Cyrus are completely devoid of any creativity or talent or truth, but our culture celebrates them anyway.

"Wait, what, you're winning? You didn't say this was a game. I guess I'll just have to play and play until I'm out of cash" Our culture tends to make life a competition, the goal being to have a better job, a bigger house, a fancier TV, and more money than everyone else. People spend their lives in the rat race, competing with their peers.

"Can we find a way to blame our way out?" references how sue-happy we are. People get fat from eating too much fast food and sue McDonalds. People take no responsibility, and just try to blame their way out of their own problems.

I absolutely adore this song.

Japandroids – Sovereignty Lyrics 16 years ago
To me, it sounds like "It's raining in Vancouver but I don't give a fuck 'cause I'm alone with you tonight" ?
Love love love this song!
I saw these guys play in Buffalo a few weeks ago and they were fantastic, despite a bunch of technical difficulties. So much energy =)

God Help the Girl – Come Monday Night Lyrics 16 years ago
This is such a beautiful song! Catherine has a gorgeous voice =)

*I'm pretty sure it's "Tuesday morning looms" and "we're in a state of grace." That's how it reads in the lyrics that came with the record, and how it sounds to me.

Dirty Projectors – Temecula Sunrise Lyrics 16 years ago
Gorgeous song =)

In an interview with David Longstreth on Pitchfork, the interviewr asked if DL had ever been to Temecula, California.
This is his answer:

"I've driven through, yeah. As we're driving through it's just like, improbably brand new construction homes as far as the eye could see. [Former Dirty Projector] Susanna [Waiche] was like, "My grandfather and I used to go for picnics up when the flowers would bloom for like two weeks up in the hills here." It was so hard to imagine. My friend James Sumner [the animator who worked on The Getty Address] and I, were talking about how warehouses in the late 20th century were these bohemian zones for artists to camp out and work on their art projects. These disused spaces of a formerly industrial economy, or whatever. We were thinking about the same sort of thing happening when the kind of like social or economic impetus that drove these huge new construction swaths of suburbia and the exurbs of all these American cities. We imagined whole subdivisions would get colonized by these kids who paint the houses like these beautiful, crazy murals and work on their funny escapist utopian art projects in McMansions. [Laughs] So the song is sort of about that."

High Places – Gold Coin Lyrics 16 years ago
Amazing song. So ethereal and beautiful.
I like to think god is more a concept than an actual being, and I guess this song is saying how everything is connected through nature. The ocean and the sun and the air are holy and part of us, but separate from our physical bodies. Our energy and psyche are all connected. Our bodies are what hold us down, stumbling in the mist.

The Fratellis – Milk and Money Lyrics 17 years ago
It seems to be about having your delusions shattered, the loss of naivette and innocence. Maybe at a concert? Kids realizing the capitalistic nature of our world, at a concert shouting "what's the deal?" with all the bands on the radio sounding the same. The girl realizes the commercialism and loss of art and meaning while on the dancefloor so she won't be dancing anymore.

MGMT – Future Reflections Lyrics 17 years ago
The first two stanzas, with the phrases "primitive man" and "so my tribe, with my knife cut the heart from a lonely life" seem like they relate to the idea behind 4th Dimensional Transition, the Mayan prophesy about the end of our current age and our entrance into the Fifth World in 2012.

Ok, well, the bits in this song really just seem to relate to the Maya, and 4DT definitely does. I just thought that was interesting, considering weekendwarriorrr's post about this song being about a post-apocolyptic world.

MGMT – Kids Lyrics 17 years ago
I think there's a message about treating the earth better in this song: ("Control yourself/Take only what you need from it/A family of trees wanted to be haunted.") This seems like it's asking us to use only what we need and not waste so much.

"The water is warm/But it's sending me shivers" Global warming?

The Fratellis – Tell Me a Lie Lyrics 17 years ago
Haha let's just say I'm basically obsessed with The Frats and have read a lot of interviews. I'll try to track down the relevent ones.

There was a track-by-track review Jon did for this album- http://www.sundaymail.co.uk/tv-showbiz-news/music-news/2008/05/04/jon-fratelli-on-band-s-new-album-78057-20404266/
"Tell Me A Lie- This is a dig at me and the press. We told so many lies in the early days because we were too lazy to tell the truth. It was easy to spin yarns to see if we could get them printed. I regret it, it became a pain. Anyone with a brain knew we were talking s****. This is a confessional but doesn't sound it because it's a big rock song. It's the biggest, chunkiest one we have done yet."

Here's the lion-tamer bit- http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Lifestyle/Features/Gibson%20Recommends%20the%20Fratelli/
“I worked in a casino, Barry has claimed. “I was a card shark. Mince was a lion tamer. Jon worked in an old folks’ home.”

I can't find the bit about them meeting as carneys, but I definitely read it somewhere.

The Fratellis – Tell Me a Lie Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is basically Jon ripping on himself for all the lies he used to tell the press. In the early days they were too lazy to tell the truth and made up loads of stories to see if they would get printed. But it ended up being really difficult to keep track of, what they had said. There was once a story about the three of them meeting while working at a travelling fair, and Mince being a lion-tamer, which is probably where the fairground bit comes from.

The Fratellis – Shameless Lyrics 17 years ago
This is basically Jon looking around and seeing all the other bands being half his age and thinking how ridiculous it is.
He's also reminding himself how much he loves what he does. On a US tour last year (?) it became too much and he jumped on a plane and went on holiday with his girlfriend, Heather (aka Chelsea Dagger), who is now his wife. He's yelling at himself for ever complaining about his life. "I'm so sick of hearing how your love for this has died."

This song gives me chills.
Especially the verse that goes "and the last chance girl in her first dance swirl lays her head down on the wooden floor, won't be dancing any more."
It simply delights me.

This song never fails to crack me up.

Basically, his girlfriend becomes all religious and stops being any fun.

I absolutely love the "hides my cigarettes and steals my guitar" line!

The Fratellis – Baby Doll Lyrics 17 years ago
I think he's in love with this girl, and will do anything to prove his love for her ("I'm ready to beg and to sing for my sins.") But he seems like he doesn't really take it seriously, with him kind of brushing off friends telling him she's gone... almost like a joke, like yeah, yeah, "bring her home tonight." He is just waiting to find out whether she wants him, too, or if she'll choose someone else.

In the last stanza, he thinks she's left him, but it turns out his friends know her better than he does, and she's really just "burned" from a fight. ("They said you was burned out, I just laughed and said 'come one, she's not burned, she's just gone...' They laughed when you said you was leaving, everybody knows you well, except for me, can't you tell?").

I love this song, it's so beautiful, one of my favorites.
It almost makes me want to cry.

Belle & Sebastian – Piazza, New York Catcher Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it's about a young couple who's relationship is going a bit stale ("how many nights of talking in hotel rooms can you take?") and the narrator wants to elope and sail around the world to save it, and spice it back up. Maybe they'll elope to San Fransicso and see the Giants and Mets play. They begin talking about baseball, but it's just something to keep them going. He can't take care of her the way she deserves, and her family tries to warn him with gentle words. It seems like their relationship will die unless they do something drastic to sustain it. They "drink themselves awake," but then continue to debate whether Piazza's gay or not.

I find the stanza about the pitcher very sad. I think baseball was his life, but he is beginning to burn out. He drinks heavily, although he knows it will affect his game. He just goes to church and begs God to let him back into the game because "life outside the diamond is a wrench." I think this represents the narrator's relationship with Miss Private. If they don't get married, their relationship will fall apart, adding another dimension to "life outside the diamond is a wrench." They love each other and don't want to be apart, but their relationship is mostly filler conversations. In the end they decide to elope, hence the line "meet you at the statue in an hour."

The Fratellis – The Gutterati? Lyrics 18 years ago
Sooo this is basically one of my favorites off the album. (Are you guys UK, 'cause the US version has this on it). It makes me want to jump up and down and run around screaming. I can't understand half the words, but that's part of why it's so amazing. Just raw energy! The "I hate your fucking lyrics" bit kills me ever time. And the "call me Cinderella" part is great, too.

As for what it's about... looks like he's high out of his mind. Any more than that... no clue.

Modest Mouse – Missed the Boat Lyrics 18 years ago
Ahem. According to the booklet, the lyrics are "I was knocking on your ears door, but you were always out," not "...don't worry, you were...". Just thought I'd interject. Awsome song though, one of my favorites on the album. The second chorus gives me chills.

Colbie Caillat – Bubbly Lyrics 18 years ago
Colbie has a great voice, but I feel the songwriting is poor. The lyrics are really simplistic and kind of make me want to roll my eyes. Hopefully her songwriting will mature... if she even wrote this. If not, she needs to find someone who writes better.

Modest Mouse – Gravity Rides Everything Lyrics 18 years ago
To me, it seems like he's talking about peoples' need to know what happens after death ("got to see, got to know right now. What's that riding on your everything?"). But he doesnt believe there's anything after, or that it doesnt matter ("it isnt anything at all").

And he goes on to say that shit happens, but not to worry about it because "everything will fall, fall right into place." There's no use in stressing over little things like the afterlife or spilt milk because fate will keep everything together.

I absolutely adore this song. Gives me chills.

The Fratellis – Ole Black 'n' Blue Eyes Lyrics 18 years ago
To me, it sound like he went out with a girl, Tina, at the urging of Chelsea ("Chelsea said she's got nowhere to go"...). Chelsea feels bad for Tina and thinks a relationship with him would be good for her. So he went out with her,("I could take her dancing just to give the girl a chance"), but didn't liker her. However, she's fallen for him and is making "come take me home eyes" at him. He doesn't know how to break it to her, and is afraid she will react badly if he does.
