Tell Me a Lie Lyrics
Ah-aah-ah...
Well once I was persuaded to open up my head
I told them how it was and went and got it wrong instead
I said would you believe me if you only knew
I'd been stealing everything, this conversations through
And the boy cried hang him at three
I saw him on the front page laughing at me
He worked in a fairground in a tall hat
He's a liar he's a liar and a good one at that
Say what you want to say what you will
Write your number on my telephone bill
Walk like a monkey, kick like a mule
I could be your beggar but I'd rather be just as cruel
So I told them all I could about what could they expect
but I lost my sense of smell and I gained my self respect
They told me I was curious I told them they were slow
They asked me were I get this stuff I told them I don't know
And the boy cried whoopi de dee
There's a woman with a mustache who wont let me be
Though she was born on a Monday she's a hundred and four
She's a liar she's a liar and a little bit more
Say what you want to say what you will
Write your number on my telephone bill
walk like a monkey, kick like a mule
I could be your beggar but I'd rather be just as cruel
And the boy cried hang him at three

Haha let's just say I'm basically obsessed with The Frats and have read a lot of interviews. I'll try to track down the relevent ones.
There was a track-by-track review Jon did for this album- http://www.sundaymail.co.uk/tv-showbiz-news/music-news/2008/05/04/jon-fratelli-on-band-s-new-album-78057-20404266/ "Tell Me A Lie- This is a dig at me and the press. We told so many lies in the early days because we were too lazy to tell the truth. It was easy to spin yarns to see if we could get them printed. I regret it, it became a pain. Anyone with a brain knew we were talking s****. This is a confessional but doesn't sound it because it's a big rock song. It's the biggest, chunkiest one we have done yet."
Here's the lion-tamer bit- http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Lifestyle/Features/Gibson%20Recommends%20the%20Fratelli/ “I worked in a casino, Barry has claimed. “I was a card shark. Mince was a lion tamer. Jon worked in an old folks’ home.”
I can't find the bit about them meeting as carneys, but I definitely read it somewhere.
this song is fucking sex and so is the entire gossip girl episode that it was featured on
I couldn't agree more :D

This song is basically Jon ripping on himself for all the lies he used to tell the press. In the early days they were too lazy to tell the truth and made up loads of stories to see if they would get printed. But it ended up being really difficult to keep track of, what they had said. There was once a story about the three of them meeting while working at a travelling fair, and Mince being a lion-tamer, which is probably where the fairground bit comes from.
Lmosher, i'm just curious, where do you know that from? haha, it sounds kind of funny. but definitely interesting.
