| The Vaccines – We're Happening Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
Seems to be about an unlikely relationship with someone from a different 'scene' and he's having second thoughts about it. It's obviously based around a specific college or university... 'I studied here two years ago, Do you know all the guys I know?' and he's poking fun at the arts students or cool crowd... 'all your friends like The Gang Of Four? No none of mine have ever heard 'em before' I think the following lyric is a round-about way of saying these people are shallow... 'Miles high and inches deep And that is quite an arty cliqué.' Yeah. |

| The Stone Roses – Love Spreads Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
Technically Hendrix didn't write 'Hey joe', it was written by Billy Roberts. You're spot-on with the Hendrix influence though, but I'd have mainly said with the guitar solos, which remind me of 'Voodoo Chile'. I think the reference to Hendrix is a very deliberate move, I always interpreted this song as a commentary on the way rock n roll gets abused and bastardised by modern bands, and more broadly the 'original' rock n roll practitioners back in the 50s and 60s. Back then radio stations refusing to play music by black artists, back when racism was still prevalent in America. There is a link with another Stones song, 'Daybreak' which references Rosa Parks. In 'Love Spreads', Brown references Martin Luther King with the lyric 'I had a dream'. King and Parks were figureheads of the civil rights movement. I also think the lines 'Hammer flash in the lightning, they're hurting her again' could be seen as a reference to modern rock concerts, with 'Hammer flash' referring to the hammer-on, a guitar technique used prolifically in blues and early rock music. The line 'They're hurting her again' refers to the musicians abusing black music. With these things in mind, 'Love Spreads' can be seen as depicting black music (personified by a black woman) being abused by Manchester's music industry ("The Rainy City' personified by the rain). This shows a broader theme across the album. I can't deny the religious element to the track, suggesting that Jesus was in-fact a black woman, rather than a white man. I'm not clued-up on theology so I'm not going to discuss the various religious interpretations that this could draw. However, I do think this again is perhaps a stab at the old establishment's habit of favouring the image of the white male. It also seems to run parallel with the album title 'Second Coming', which has various connotations, the most obvious of all being that it was actually their second album... |

| The Libertines – Last Post On The Bugle Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
It's a play on words, The Last Post is played on the bugle to commemorate dead soldiers from the British Infantry regiment, it's also slang for the last dab of cocaine from a packet. Pete's drug use lead to the 'death' of his relationship with Carl, so both senses of the words are relevant. The meanings are juxtaposed to reflect this. In short, the last post on the bugle, led to the last post on the bugle. |

| This song is about acid | |
| The Strokes – What Ever Happened? Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Also, at the end of the play, Hannah leaves the hotel at which they are both staying. Effectively walking away from her last opportunity to settle down with someone. I think line "That's an ending that I can't write cos I've got you to let me down" refers to this also. He's basically saying that Lawrence has the opportunity to forget what could have been because the object of his affections has left, whereas Julian is suggesting that he doesn't have this opportunity, possibly because he will see or hear from his ex quite regularly. | |
| The Strokes – What Ever Happened? Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
The line "Oh Tennessee, what did you write?" is definitely referring to Tennessee Williams and, more specifically, to his play 'The Night of the Iguana' In the next line ("I come together in the middle of the night"), Julian is comparing himself to the character Lawrence Shannon, a shamed priest. After Lawrence suffers a nervous breakdown, Hannah comes to his aid and offers him advice in the middle of the night. The next two lines ("But that's an ending that I can't write cos I've got you to let me down") are a reference to the end of the play where Lawrence tears the cross from his neck, metaphorically freeing himself of the ties of the church that have caused him so much stress. The fact that Julian "can't write" that ending shows that he is unable to free himself from what it is that is stressing him out (which, given the context of the rest of the song, is probably a recently ended relationship). |

| The Strokes – Razorblade Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I can't believe after 3 pages of comments, only like 2 people have touched upon the proper meaning of this song... He's drawing comparison between relationships and self-harming. One would imagine the premise is that the pain and suffering involved (in both self-harming and damaged relationships) is exciting and almost part of the fun, thus making it worth it. |

| The Strokes – Razorblade Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Never in the entire history of the English language has such little meaning been achieved by so many words. You should really read what you've written before you post. | |
| The Strokes – I'll Try Anything Once Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
It's also about how people react to certain situations "7 ways to go through school, either you're noticed or left out, 7 ways to get ahead, 7 reasons to drop out" Much of the song is also about the way society expects people to behave and how people react to that behaviour. "There is a time when we all fail, some people take it pretty well, some take it all out on themselves, some they just take it out on friends, oh everybody plays the game, and if you don't you're called insane" The only bit I can't figure out is... "Don't don't don't don't it's not safe no more, i've got to see you one more time, soon you were born, in 1984" I also think it's 'SON you were born...' rather than 'soon...' Great song though, probably my favourite Strokes song. |

| The Strokes – I'll Try Anything Once Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I've done acid... this lyric has nothing to do with acid. If you look at the rest of the verse (and actually the other verses too), you'll see that most of this song is about how individuals react to certain situations. I think with this line he's hinting at the influence society's expectations has on people's behaviour and how they react to those situations. |

| MGMT – Time to Pretend Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Large portions of this song are about Jimi Hendrix's life. "Let's make some music, make some money, find some models for wives... The models will have children, we'll get a divorce" This is a reference to Diana Carpenter who gave birth to a child of whom Jimi was allegedly the father, although they were never married. "We'll find some more models, everything must run its course" This is reference to two girlfriends Jimi had later on in his career, Monika Dannemann who was a figure skater and one-time glamour model, and Kathy Etchingham who was also a part-time model. "I'll move to Paris, shoot some heroin and fuck with the stars" This is a reference to Jimi's very public heroin addiction which was particularly active during the brief spell he spent living in Paris in 1968. "This is our decision to live fast and die young" This sums up Jimi's life and death. "We'll choke on our vomit and that will be the end" Jimi died on September 18, 1970 at the Samarkand Hotel in London of vomit-induced asphyxiation after overdosing on Vesperax and red wine. |

| The Libertines – All At Sea Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
"There's no thorn, North Star, can't not poision talk" I think this should be "There's no thorn, no stalk and no poision talk" or "There's no thorn, no stalking, no poision talk" I can't decide but I'm sure it's one of them |

Yeah I hear 'friends' not 'people' Also, Auschwitz was a prisoner of war camp for captured Allied soldiers, not a concentration camp. Also, Albeit IS a word, it's a bastardisation of all-be-it. Also, this song cracks me up. Libs 4eva! |

|
| The Libertines – Up The Bracket Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
At the start of the song, I hear him shouting 'Ave it!' not 'get out of it' but I may be wrong. I always thought when he says 'shadow men' he meant heavies (dodgy henchmen type blokes) and that they ask him for a friend's address to beat him up/collect a debt or whatever, but he tells them 2 fuck off so they chase him and kick fuck out of him. They're not actually from London, they're from the Midlands, they were just living in London at the time. London IS the coolest place on Earth and us Londoners ARE the coolest people! lol I totaly agree with SkunkFish, 2 fingers looks way cooler than 1. |

| The Libertines – Can't Stand Me Now Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Androoo wrote: The only bit I don't understand is: "You tried to pull the wool, I wasn't feeling too clever" 'Not feeling too clever' is probably a reference to Pete being off his face of heroin. Given the context I'd say 'you tried to pull the wool' is probably referencing being thrown out of the band as pulling the wool over someone's eyes means fooling or tricking them. Not 100% sure though. |

*I'm not 'British', I'm English *this is not pop music. *I don't know how slowly you read but if it takes you 15 minutes to read 8 lines of text, get help. *I do listen to most of those artists but I do not use them to feign knowledge of American life. *With the exception of Jimi Hendrix, Axel Rose, Desmond Dekker, Johnny Cash, Slash, Gene Simmonds and Jerry Garcia I have no respect for American musicians. *Kanye West is a racist cunt |

| Bolt Action Five – Tree Friend Tree Foe Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This song is about the kids's TV show 'Knightmare' that was on back in the day. There were teams of four kids, one would wear a helmet so they couldn't see and had to walk around a virtual 3D world guided by the rest of their friends. They came up against a load of bad guys (usually played by washed-up actors) and had to pick up power-ups (hence the 'turn left, get the bread...' lyric). |

ok i dont think davealot understands the word legend. lol great song, funny that nobody's noticed that the lyrics say 'you say a fucking bore' instead of 'you say LIFE'S a fucking bore' lol and do you think that mentioning maid in manhattan is a subtle link in that in the film two people fall in love without fully realising the truth about eachother? just a thought. might be wrong. and ashman4, you should change the 'h' in ur username to an 's' |

OKAY, *start rant* It's PIG LATIN. go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pig_Latin and look for yourself. THERE'S NO SUCH LANGUAGE SYSTEM AS DOUBLE DUTCH! IT'S AN ENGLISH EXPRESSION THAT REFFERS TO TALKING UTTER SHIT. For example: "The vast majority of people who have posted on the page are talking double-dutch." *end rant* as for the "we ken/weekend" debate I think it's 'WE KEN' because it just makes more fucking sense (and I'm not even scottish). Although on their website and album sleeve it says 'weekend'. |
