Billy Bragg – A New England Lyrics 17 years ago
What I find really poignant about this song is how cold and brutally honest he is. "I don't feel bad about letting you go I just feel sad about letting you know" - he knows it's going to be painful but he feels no guilt. And also the "I'm just looking for another girl". Imagine saying that to someone when you broke up!

Beyoncé – Work It Out Lyrics 18 years ago
"You've given me a taste of your honey, I want the whole beehive"

In light of the above remark, Beyonce might be interested to hear what New Order have to say about honey, in particular its retail availability:

New Order – Crystal Lyrics 18 years ago
"Here comes love, it's like honey, you can't buy it with money."

Sumner is wrong on this point - honey is widely available in exchange for money. I just bought some the other day, in fact.

Please boys, do your research before making these sweeping statements.

Björk – Heirloom Lyrics 18 years ago
Has anyone else noticed a recurring theme in Bjork's songs and videos of orifices, and things entering and leaving the body? I'm convinced it's not all in my head. For example:

"My mother and son pour into me / Warm glowing oil into my wide open throat" - Heirloom

"These teeth are a ladder up to his mouth" - Mouth's Cradle

"I've been filled with steam for months... My arms ooze out of my shoulders" - Vertebrae by Vertebrae

"Drink me make me feel real, wet your beak in the stream" - Bachelorette

"I'll heal you with a razorblade, I'll cut a slit open and the luminous beam feeds you" - All Neon Like

"Who would have known that a boy like him would have entered me lightly, restoring my blisses" - Cocoon

"I will take the sun in my mouth" - Sun in my mouth

And check out the videos for All is Full of Love, Cocoon, Hidden Place, Pagan Poetry, I Miss You, Army of Me, Joga...

Elbow – Station Approach Lyrics 18 years ago
"Coming home I feel like I / Designed the buildings I walk by"

What a great way to describe coming back to the place you know best after a long time. Such a happy song without being sentimental.

Elbow – My Very Best Lyrics 18 years ago
Imagine starting a break-up song with "Well, give that girl my very best". It's so un-rock n' roll, it's brilliant.

To me the song's subdued tone and lack of any bitterness make it even more poignant. Guy is just quietly accepting that love has failed: "If it seems that it's just not enough to love, then love lie down".

The line "There were switches never flicked" is great too. He's looking back and wishing he'd made more of what he had while he had it, thinking of opportunities that he let pass and now he'll never have again.

Like most of Elbow's songs, this one doesn't take much analysis - Guy's lyrics are so direct, ordinary and effortless. And so great. I love Elbow.

Kings of Convenience – Gold in the Air of Summer Lyrics 18 years ago
I love that first line 'Without giving anything away'. It's as if for some reason he has to keep the details secret so no-one guesses who he's talking about. It's makes it sound so real and personal. Little touches like that... you don't get them in every song.

I also get the feeling that it's the girl in the song (rather than the singer) who has come out of a break up or for whatever reason is unsure about things. That's why he thinks she won't come, and why she's worried about where she should be, and why he has to remind her 'it's a good thing that you came along with me'.
